Best and Worst Pool Movies...

The Hustler was and is the best Pool movie ever made. For so many reasons, I could go on for pages and pages.

I guess the only one that even comes close (according to other people, not me) is TCOM.
Think about it - A young totally un-known pool player goes to the DCC in a couple of weeks and can beat Efren and all the other top players. Not very realistic is it? This was the whole premise and base story line.

The Hustler was not only realistic and possible but really did happen. A young Gipsy Pool player from Oklahoma who gets real good playing in California and hears about a great player in NY named Fats. He goes On The Road and hustles his way to NY.

The movie The Hustler changed my life so I guess I am a little prejudiced but I really don't think there ever will be another Pool Movie that can even compare.

TY & GL

If I owned the rights to the Hustler your would have to tie me down to keep me from doing a highly publicized release on DVD with a huge promotion. It is a movie that may have actually saved the sport of pool. The Hustler created some of the most recognized and memorable characters in movie history. From bar tables to leagues to this forum there is a chance none of it would exist today without The Hustler. I big time release of the movie could be great for the sport with background info like the do on the DVD's.

I slightly prefer the COM, mainly for the journey from local bar, to road hustling to tourney play, with some good pool action and interesting near to real life hustling experiences.

But it could have been much better if Vince wasn't portrayed as a kind of everyday jerk. There was some attempt to portray him as a type of savant, with his expertise in pool and video games but it didn't mesh. They either should have done this better, or portrayed him as having a history of deep determination, dedication, perhaps inspired by and trained by his grandfather, a pool genius of the past. A kid whose talent lay hidden, who needed to experience the lessons of the streets to take his game to the top.

Also, I would have ditched the whole love story between Eddie and his misses who wished for commitment...urgh... What was that about? Trying to squeeze a 3% increase in the female 30-60 demographic?

Also, showing Eddie's being hustled by the young black student was stupid. It lowered his credibility as the experienced hustler. Fair enough show him struggling for form, but not forgetting the subject which he is supposed to be the best at.

The last part that eeked me was when Eddie pulled out of the tournie, after Vince threw the game to him. So petty. Such base machismo. They could have made a hundred end scenarios that would have shone way beyond that.

How about they both make the final, Eddie wins it in a grueling battle and then finds some reason to suspect that Vince was throwing the match. No one is sure...the challenge for his best game is made...and we wait for TCOM2 to hit cinemas :D

Hardly anyone ever mentions The Baltimore Bullet. Any thoughts on this one?
I've seen it a couple of times. It was enjoyable, but not highly memorable. James Coburn had a very shonky cue action...that part I remember.:o

Colin, Have you ever read the book? If not, take a read and you will hate the movie.

Inclined to disagree. I liked the ending, and thought it fit well with the character development.

One thing I loved about The Color of Money was its skillful analysis of dumping as a means of setting up action. From Eddie’s vantage point, dumping went from being an undeniable and on-the-level aspect of betting on pool to an objectionable and regrettable practice. Vincent, at first, refused to dump, and it took a lot of disciplining from both his girlfriend and Eddie to get him to start doing it. By the film’s end, dumping was an art that Vincent.had mastered.

The Atlantic City tournament was where Eddie did a little soul searching, and when he turned down a shot at having a piece of Vincent's action in the green room, it was proof positive that he no longer wished to be part of pool's seedier side (a point later reinforced by his refusal to take his "share" of what Vincent earned by dumping against him). In Vincent, Eddie saw some of himself, and what he saw repulsed him. Eddie now wanted to win on merit, rather than through a hustle, and his passion for winning fair and square showed in his exuberance in his tournament matches.

All of a sudden, he was the Eddie that beat Minnesota Fats through excellence, rather than the Eddie who had successfully hustled many, and his self-esteem seemed to be peaking just when he learned that Vincent had dumped in their match, a clear blow to his ego.

Suddenly, the tournament no longer represented Eddie's best chance to regain his self-esteem. Why, one might have wondered, was he practicing after he forfeited his match in the tournament? Because he was preparing for the only match out there that mattered to him......the one against Vincent.....and his resolve to play and win that match was his new raison d'etre.

I thought it was a great ending!

Well written and explained sjm,
I see your point, and it's a decent moral to a story.

But it still seems a bit disneyland to me. And turns Vince into a villain, when he had actually finally smartened up to the lessons we barracked for him to pick up all along the journey.

The ending is kind of sad, not like we see in Rocky type movies which crescendo to an amazing victory. The moral lesson of dumping could have been squeezed in, but we are there to be inspired, motivated, not preached to.

I would say The Baltimore Bullet is not a book. I have been collecting billiard books for many years, and probably would have heard of it by now.

I've look many times and I have never seen the Baltimore Bullet as a book either.

For me the movie is a 6 on the 10 scale. The pool was pretty good (lots of trick shots) and there were lots of famous players in the movie, Mosconi, Hopkins, Mizerak, Rempe,... The plot was pretty shaky and comedy is a bit slapstick. I really hated this one the first time through and almost shut it off. But watching it for the lighter side the second time through, it was OK. The background shooting and stuff became kind of interesting and I will watch it from time to time now.

It is only available on VHS used as it is not made anymore, but you can get a copy of it on DVD at BertKinister.com in the Classic Player Video Section. He has some pretty cool stuff on there. I have the Volume 9 that is real choppy but it has the 9 minute reel to reel movie on it Super Cue Men. It was a Trick Shot thing from Mosconi and Caras. They do some really cool shots you just don't see anymore like jumping a ball from one table over a matchbook on to another table and making 6 balls on the second table. I must admit it is old and shotty, but one of my favorite things to watch. It also had some old Hoppe footage and other stuff like that.

Wow sorry I wrote all that. I got carried away.

Merry Christmas, Donovan! Here's another pool movie, Pakners. Stars Efren Reyes. I haven't seen it, but with the information on it, the language appears to be in a Filipino dialect. Hoping it comes out with English subtitles.

Merry Christmas Mick! BTW, it was already on the list. :D

pool movies

i realize it isn't a full length movie, but anyone ever see a TWILIGHT ZONE episode with Johnathan Winters & Jack Klugman ( Oscar from the odd couple)?
been a long time since i saw it. if i remember right, winters, playing the part of the devil or something hustles klugman. both actors were very young then, i'm guessing early 1960's.
Merry Christmas everybody
i'm going to the Derby on the 6th and 7th
anybody wanna toss down a few beers?
Brent

Twilight Zone

The original TZ aired on 10-13-61. It was later redone on "The New Twilight Zone", which aired on 6-1-88. The new episode starred Esia Morales as the living hustler, and Maury Chakin as deceased Fats Brown.

My favorite line from Baltimore Bullit, "you cant play me straight up, you taught me everything you know!"

"No kid, I taught you everything YOU KNOW!"

I just got the Israeli movie> it is called "Billiards Festival" and there are only 2 snooker scenes in it. Slightly funny with English subtitles. On line it was $26. I have to get ALL the pool movies regardless of how good!!!
