Best book/vidoes for improvement

Hello

I've always struggled when I play 14.1 and for the moment I play on a very hard played table. But I love the game and I really want to improve. I don't meet any good players in that game around here, so there's no one to teach me "tricks", and the ways you should think when building patterns and stuff. So I was wondering which books, videos or internet texts should I read to improve my game? I am a good shooter when it comes to 9-ball and 8-ball, but this thing with break balls, key balls, patterns and stuff really gives me a hard time. Thanks in advance for any contributions to my request.

best regards

Hi.
i would get Phil capelle's book "Play your best straight pool", they got it on amazon. Mike Sigels videos "Perfect pool" and "Runout" is also great.

I second that on "play your best straight pool" by Phil Capelle.

I also recomend a video by Jim Rempe " How To Run A Rack" & " How To Run 100 Balls"

you can check out www.accu-stats.com i believe Pat Fleming has it in stock, he may have the Capelle book as well.

2009 Predator 14.1

Earl Herring vs Oliver Ortmann (player review)
You can get this from accu stats
Listen to what Ortmann has to say you will learn more than you can imagine IMHO

Rempe

I also recomend the Accu-Stats video by: Jim Rempe "How To Run A Rack" & "How To Run 100 Balls". Another that helped me a lot was the player-reviewed DVD match between Rempe and George Sansouci at the 2000 US Straight Pool Open. Rempe is very good at commentator training. He doesn't appear to hold anything back and gives you a full rundown of the what, where, when and why of what he's doing on every shot.

the books on 14.1 are ok but you can't beat the vids. i like john schmidt's videos. he's a very good teacher who explains in detail how he goes about running the rack and setting up the b-ball.

Okay... I will check out his videos too then. I guess listening to a pro commentaring his game is a rewarding way of learning.

As some of us already shown up some books, sausage s is also for sure right.
From my side i would say it this way: Mastering Pool from George Fels is a Book that you can read in *one session* whithout getting boring-well written with humor and deep knowledge and nice stories about old *14-1 heroes*-and further really much knowledge.
The book *play your best straight pool* is more about to train some specific patterns/drills and a bit knowledge. It s good to put it near you on a table while practicing.
But if you *ate* those books you need to play many many matches and watch also many matches from good players-this will bring you to a higher-level.

Seriously... not to talk bad about anyone but before you go and waste money on some stinking book where chances are you aren't going to learn much... Check out these video's. They are posted by a billiard club near Chicago. They paid Danny Diliberto to give them private lessons and they recorded and posted their lessons. Danny Diliberto if you haven't heard of him is an old school player and in the one pocket hall of fame. In these video's he goes all through patterns and anything else you could think of and recognizing certain shots. Most these video's are around 2 hours long. I guarantee you will learn more by watching these then reading some silly book. The only thing is website makes you download a player to see the full length of the video's.

There is also a video of a 14.1 Clinic by Ray Martin available online somewhere - I'm sure Dennis can direct you to it. Excellent information from a 3 time world champion - and if you don't have it already, get yourself a copy of Ray Martin's The 99 Critical Shots in Pool. Its the best book ever written about the game of pool.

Ray Martin is another great straight pool player who plays the old style.

There might be some other diliberto videos up there in Google, too.

Okay thanks for every suggestion so far. I have a lot of videos to watch :D

Besides the ones already mentioned, here are some more great ones:

Mike Sigel vs Mike Zuglan, Sigel runs 150 and out
Oliver Ortmann vs Jim Rempe, runs of 129 and 96 in the same match!
Ralf Souquet vs Efren Reyes, Ralf has a perfect 120 ball run
Clash of the Titans, Irving Crane vs Joe Balsis, Crane has an amazing 150 run.
Efren Reyes vs Dallas West, Efren with a run of 140.

John Schmidt's 164. Not his biggest run, but fantastic commentary as he analyzes what he is doing WHILE he is playing. In my opinion, this is one of the best instructional 14.1 videos available anywhere.
