Who in your opinion are the best defensive players? I'm trying to kill time at work tonight so if there's any good YouTube videos please post them.

Adam Smith plays brilliant defense at times.... You might find something from the run he made at Derby a few years ago.....

Jose Parica, in his prime, considered defense his forte.

Of the old-timers, to me, Frank Taberski stands out.....
..he was winning world 14.1 titles running 50's, but leaving nothing.

I got no argument about anyone already mentioned...
..they put more guys in jail than J Edgar....

I always thought Howard Vickery was very strong defensively. I'll also mention the unsung leaonardo andam.... way upstairs.

Safety play

Ignacio Chavez - he can really lock you up from no place - you wont see it coming - gets ball in hand more than any top pro.

Allen Hopkins...

a few months ago my buddy came over to play, and he played 1 pocket with Allen the week before. Here was his quote....

"I had a ball hanging in my pocket, and Allen played me safe locked against a single ball in the center of the table 3 shots in a row!!"

how strong is that?! :)

Probably Efren today. In the past people said Irving Crane was the best in 14.1, used to practice playing safe on himself 30 minutes a day.

Efren is, far and away, the best defensive player of our times in rotation pool, although Alex Pagulayan, Shannon Daulton, Dennis Orcullo, Ralf Souquet, Gabe Owen and Jeremy Jones all get honorable mention.

In 14.1, the greatest defensive player ever, by 8,000,000 miles, was Irving Crane, but if we restrict ourselves to those still alive, it's Allen Hopkins. Honorable mention to Ray Martin, Nick Varner, Mike Sigel, and Dallas West.

What about Nicky?

Agree with the other posts. Efren, Jose, Howard, Ralf. I first began to learn defense from Willie Munson, playing against his teams in the '70s.
But how can you forget Nick Varner? A world champ in at least four disciplines, he is a defensive master as well as an effective teacher.

Call accu-stats

Call accu-stats and order the Archer-Reyes match where I believe it went hill-hill and one of the final games had soooo many safeties where one hooked the other, the opponent kicked and got safe. I don't remember the tournament or year, but I think it was at least 10 years ago. Accu-stats will probably have someone who remembers....Archer had a table-length jacked up shot on a ball, made it and got the 9 in as well. I hope this helps

What exactly are you looking for. A lot of player play D. The key is locking on a ball or rail or both. Some players think just hiding is playing D. A good-great player with a clean kick one rail is just about as dangerous as giving him a free shot. He is kicking to make it or play safe or both. That's how I play at least.

Locking on a ball usually mean kicking multiple rails as well as taking 80% of the shot range or more away making the shot multiple times harder

I always thought Ginky was an amazing defensive player (still hate talking about him in the past-tense). I doubt I ever saw him play a set where he didn't surprise me with some defensive gem.

Ginky had the best "soft touch" I ever seen. He could use that soft stroke
and be very accurate with it. Great defensive player for sure!
