Best glue for tips??

I am going to start re-tipping my own cues for my own interest. I will probably keep my main shooting shaft tip professionally installed until i feel comfortable on my installation, not wanting the tip to fly off...which Ive seen many times. I plan to also re-tip players at the local pool hall so I am asking for any input on which glue to use. I ve read about many types and have also watched videos to see what is used. Seen all types from contact cement, Super glue, epoxy...etc Please feel free to tell the good and the bad about the types of glues you have used on the types of tips installed....Thank you in advance
 
I'm no cuemaker, but i've alway's retipped my own sticks and sticks of friends. This biggest thing about doing this without a lathe is making sure the prep is good. They have sanders that attach to the shaft and you spin to make sure its perfectly flat. I just use a file. be sure to run the bottom of your tip over sandpaper attached to a flat surface too. before you apply the tip press it on with your finger and hold it up to the light, if you did a good job prepping your won't see any light between the mating surfaces. As far as glue, its personal preferance. I use super glue gel but you don't have long to center the tip before it hardens. I place the tip on and press it holding the shaft with one hand and centering the tip with the other till the glue dries. you only have one chance to get it right. You can also use a slower drying glue and a tip clamp. that will make sure your tip is centered. after its applied you will have to sand it flush. you can place the shaft on your knees and roll it back and forth not touching the ferrule and not putting enouph pressure on it to break the tip loose either. after you get it flush shape the tip and finish it off with burnishing the sides.........

lots of work huh? maybe paying the local house 5 bucks to put it on isn't so bad........
 
Gorilla ( white ) glue ( 15 minute drying time ).
Gorilla super glue, about 2 minutes.

yea its a lot of work but i think that will make me appreciate the work more

ive seen the gorrilla glue and there were a couple types. ive read about "gorrilla white" is that the glue that says it dries white? or in the white bottle?

locktight 454 gel, been using that since i was 10yrs old, I'm 25 now....and have done hundreds of tips for others and my own cues....FACT:NEVER, NEVER HAD A TIP FALL OFF PERIOD!
 
There was another thread on this exact topic not long ago - lots of guys recommended the Loctite Control Gel superglue

So I bought some!

These are really good glues. I think the white Joey refers to is the quickdry formula polyeurothane.Also available at most Walmart and home depot stores etc.
Keep in mind the shelflife of the cyno once opened. About 8 to 16 weeks depending on humidity and tempreture.It still works after these timeframes, but the max bonding strength of the glue drops off.
Preperation is the key, along with no silicons or waxes near the surface.
So if you just siliconed the car, make sure your hands are really clean with no residue on them.Have fun.
 
oh thanks that reminds me...if you buy the locktight keep it in the fridge or the freezer it makes it last longer.
 
Locktite Professional. I prefer the thin CA so it can penetrate the leather to provide a deeper bond. That way you don't have simply a glueline holding the tip on.
 
At OB Cues we use the Loctite Professional. It's not a gel, but not real thin either. If you really think about it, we put on allot of tips!

Always keep super glues in the fridge when they are un-opened.
Never put super glue in the fridge after opening.

Clean, flat surfaces make for a tight fit, which is what super glues want.

I personally use the Tiger tip glue with the purple cap. I really like it. I have used Loctite 454 and Duro quick gel with great results also and it's available at local stores. I stock several bottles of the Tiger as well.
