Just wanted to get some other cue makers opinions, what is the best glue for cue tips?

I've been using nothing but DURO QUICK GEL for 20 years & have no reason to change...JER

I agreed with Jerry completely until the last several months when they started making Quick Gel in Brazil instead of the USA. I used Quick Gel from 1987 until 2005 with very little problems. But the Brazilian glue just is not the same as the USA stuff. It still holds on most materials, but comes off on others, especially newer Chinese ferrules and phenolic tips. Loctite 454 is good and Loctite Professional that Lowes sells is good also and much cheaper than 454.

Loctite 454 is great.
For phenolic tips, Loctite Super Glue gel's better.
Of course, if you can wait, slow-setting epoxies are better.

I've used Loctite Super Glue gel for the past 4 yrs and am extremely happy with it.:)

> I also had problems with the Duro, and more recently with the Loctite in the bottle with the squeeze grips on the side. What I've been using for the last 6 months with awesome results is Satellite City Super-T,available at most hobby/model stores. I use it with the spray accelerator, and by the time I wipe the excess off,the glue is set so thoroughly it would take a bomb to knock the tip off. I got a 4 oz bottle and a bottle of spray accelerator for 13 dollars from a friend that sells modeling supplies. The CA glues made for Stewart-McDonald Guitar Shop Supply are said to be formulated especially for wood and synthetic materials, and might be good for our uses. For those that currently use or want to experiment with using CA glues for the final finish on cues, you might want to look at the UFO brand that Satellite City makes, the UFO stands for User-Friendly/Odorless. Adhesives

Hello:

Try Stewart-McDonalds adhesives. They have a CA kit (PN 0110) that gives you a variety of Super Glues for $27.90. They have a good website at stewmac.com. I use quite a few stewmac finishing/glueing products on my cues and guitars with real good results. Think of applying some guitar finishing techniques to cues.

Loctite 454 has my vote too. I maintain about 200 house cues for the pool room my shop is located in, and can tell you with experience that 454 holds the best of all that I have tried.

Loctite 495 is also very strong, probably even stronger than 454, but harder to use when tipping because it is a very thin glue, not gel, and it sets up much faster. It also literally cooks your fingers if you aren't very good at avoiding getting it on them.

I too like the Loctite proffessional. I get mine from Home Depot.

We have a CA manufacturer close to us and we explored many different glues. One interesting thing that I learned is that pure CA is very thin. In order to make it thick, like the gels, they have to add impurities to it. The thinner the CA the more pure it is. For tips, you have to have some thickness added to it to fill the pores in the back of the tip, but it does not need to be as thick a the gels.

Even still, gels work very well, and I have used them for years with no complaints. I am not saying that you should not use them for tips. I just wanted to share what I found out in my research.

Loctite 454 seems to work up to now.

jet super glues work very well
there are only 2 major makers of all super glues
no one really makes there own

Loctite gel. Buy it in small amounts, and only buy more when you are almost out.
It deteriorates quickly, and loses effectiveness with age.

glue

Anyone try Gorilla CA?

In another thread, Varney Cues described a method used by
Dennis Searing.

-light film of CA on tip and ferrule.
-let it dry
-this primes both surfaces (absorbs into both surfaces....esp. the tip)
-lightly scuff/score both surfaces
-then, glue up both surfaces
-produces a better bond

How long do you wait for glue to dry, before you trim off sides of tip?

later,
sax
