best hitting custom pool cue???

So what's wrong with what you have now?

Once you change out the shaft on a custom cue, you have about 80% less custom cue feel.

I never quite understood spending a ton on a well known maker's cue, then sticking a run of the mill production LD shaft on the thing.

.

What does "price" had to do with anything ? And why would a Morris shaft be any more "custom" than an LD shaft? Actually, the LD shaft is probably a lot more difficult to build. I'm pretty sure the shafts cost about the same, if not the LD's might be a little higher... but less custom that a custom cue maker,,, hardly.

The one that keeps your delivery stroke straight.
I have a Bushka in every pool hall, its called a house cue.

1. The one you will never sell.
2. The one that won all the money in the tournament

+1 for what he said. I have (3) "never sell" Cues I play with exclusively.

1. Alex Brick 60" Palmer Model #20
2. Alex Brick 60" Szamboti with Dominator Shafts.
3. Larry Vigus 60" Maple Burl/Ebony Wrapless (Deano Taper).

Hopefully, you will encounter that "Special Cue". The one you will never sell.

ld shaft

I don't really like the sound of the LD shafts ....custom made shafts sounds better when you stroke the ball but the problem of deflection on the long shot with side spin is a fact. I saw a Barioni custom cues they made a low deflection shaft ...is intresting.
The only problem with my current cue is the balance point that i like a bit forward because I'm not very tall ...for the rest I will love to have an ebony one.

You pose a question that cannot be answered reliably.

There isn't any criteria or standards for determining or measuring hit & feel of a pool cue.

Everyone's answer.......every single living person's answer, or the written words of any deceased cue-maker, reflects one solitary....irrefutable fact........
their answers express their "opinions" and everyone has and is entitled to one.....but that doesn't make it right for you.

Pick a dozen cue brands and hit as many as you can.....4-5 or all 12....and see what you like the best.

Just remember that heeding the advice of strangers is pregnant with risks and so be very, very prudent whenever relying upon it.

You DO realize you're posting in a 6=year old thread, don't you?

this whole thread is odd for aq number of reasons.

the poster above who resurrected this 6 year old thread and with the op looking for recommendations for a custom cue in the $800 range, his suggestion is a dpk or franklin sw.

I figure, who cares, the op with a join date of 2004 and only 60 posts, no way he still hangs out on az. Wrong, he was here yesterday. How do people do that, btw, only post 60 times in 16 years? I know I can't. :D

yes, totally subjective topic, but I vote for Olney, Jensen and Diveney for best bang for the buck under $1k.

carry on.

best,

Well. IMO there are 4 "camps" of cue "hits". The hit IMO, tips being the same, largely comes down to #1 taper, #2 diameter and #3 ferrule material.

For those that perceive the game as a "power" game they usually prefer the hard type of hit you find in a DPK, Southwest, Barhart, Howard,

For those that view the game as more of a "finesse game" where action is controlled by the stroke and like a softer hit then you are looking at Balabushka inspired cues like Szambotti, Tascarella, Scruggs Joss (East and West) Schon in non SS joints Phelps Dominiak

In the middle, are some cuemakers that have shaft tapers sort of in-between these two extremes many of which use radial pins in cuemakers like Gilbert, Treadway, Lambros (Ultra joint/Ultimate joint), Olney

Sugartree, Josey and the others seem to have their own sort of hit as well, though I have never like this hit so have less experience.

Which of these 4 broad camps appeals to you and fits your game best is personal opinion. Also many cue makers can tailor their hit to your specifications so not all cues from a specific maker will hit alike, depends on the original spec/requirements from the person that commissioned it.

Top three I have actually played with.

Balabushka now in Glenn Collection.

Mike Lambros that is my buddies.

Titlist Conversion.

EDIT... so this is a bit of an old thread, why u dig this up again new forum member? I doubt there is anything new to add after 6 years LOL

In fact my reply back then was the same as my reply now before I realized it was an old post.

Hi everyone, for you what is the best hitting cue (custom) you haver try???
I don't need (and don't have the money) a collectible cue, just a player cue .... exemple southwest or bender capone BCM i need a low deflection stroke with a good hit for 10 ball 9 ball but even straight pool .....planning 800 USD or 1000 USD .
Now I use a BKB custom with a wx700 mezz shaft.
Thanks to everyone for the attention....

You will get 50 different answers, once you change the shaft on a cue you pretty much changed the feel of it. Just get a different shaft for your current cue and see how you like it. You already seem to know the names of makers, I doubt having a bunch of other people say what they like will help you any, especially if you want an LD shaft to use with one.

Best cues (for me) that I ever owned were a Bushka, Tascarella, plain maple Tad and original Gina. The Tasc. was one that I loaned money on and gave the guy one year to redeem it at 10% mark-up. I feel in love with that cue and must have won ten grand with it during the time I had it, mostly playing $20-$100 action in my poolroom. I never heard boo from the guy and I thought it was mine. Then, in the last week out of nowhere he showed up and handed me the dough. I tried to buy it from him but no deal.
