I am wondering if Ruben Bautista is #1? Maybe Rafael Martinez?
Are there a few up and comers from South of the border?
I don't know where Ernesto is from but he can play very strong and seems to be consistent.
Just wondering if there are any champions from Mexico other than the few I mentioned.

Ernesto is from Chihuahua Mexico. Morro Paez and Ernesto have had the most success historically, I believe, playing pro pool, although both are older now.

Ignacio Chavez, Marco Marquez... R. Martinez has to have been the best so far.

Cesar Morales was a pretty fair shot.

Francisco Galindo deserves a mention....played good in tournaments and for the cash.

Gent by the name of Sergieo (not sure of the spelling) back during the 70's,,played real good out west. Wade Crane had trouble giving him the 8,,but could still get there doing it. That was when he was giving Brian the 7.

It seems to me these two guys, Ismael (Smiley) Ramirez and Manuel (Tuna) Ayala were strong players back in the day also.

I see many names mentioned here of older players. Don't get me wrong Ernesto's and Rafael's games still amaze me. My question is are there any young talent moving north anymore? I know Carom Bola is big in many parts of Mexico but seems to me that there is plenty of pool being played also.

This was something I wondered myself since if I go to a Mexican pool hall most are playing carambola or some game where they draw a number and can't let the opponent sink that ball. They like to play 8 ball in the last pocket and also shoot from the kitchen on scratches. Has there been any recent Mexican players who have won some like world championship or high international tournament?

I think you are talking about a Sergio Vargas....not many road players in the 90s liked the action in Houston that Sergio gave them....he played at a speed that was a real high gear....watched him a ton then...but I heard he was a true monster in the 70s

There is a man in his 50s from mexico city. and plays real good. When he heads south the line is always short to play him, and very few even try.

I watched him around Dallas in the early 2000's. Supposedly, he was a monster playing jacked-up one handed as well. One of his running buddies used to say the same thing, that he was an amazing player in the 70's playing some of the best American players.

I believe Jay Helfert has written a few stories about him on the forums from the time that Sergio was in his neck of the woods.

Mexican players

There were two great players both named Sergio Vargas 70s thru 90s, some others- Joe Rocha, Marco Marquez, Little Al Romere, many, many more. Rafael Martinez was maybe the best but had some serious issues with booze.
