who was the best pool player when you were younger or now that played in your home room are area.iam from baltimore and in my room it was cigar tom vanover from the 70s 80s and 90s.

Rags Fitzpatrick, Starlight Billiards 15th and Irving St. N.W. Washington D.C. upstairs.
Inky was the house man who wore an apron and a visor and smoked a cigar. Wood floors, spitoons etc. Was a real live pool room of the past. Rags used to spot Willie Mosconi a ball playing one hole and win. Me and Gracy played $50 gin. It was around 1970. Lassiter, Taylor, Beenie and more came through but Rags was king of one hole on table#1

Best pool player in your pool room

For 30 years the best in Columbus was Kenny McCoy, now it's Chris Bartrum.

When I first started playing there were a few good players in the area but there was one that was just a little better, his name was Keith.......

When I first got in to the game heavy about 20 years ago I would say Greg Riggie was probably the best along with Junior Harris who was living in the area at the time. Cigar Tom would come around once in awhile but he wasn't a regular but he certaintly was right up there with those guys.

In the dive I learned to play in the best player was a guy named Sterling "Smiley" Carter.Sterling was a great guy,and very charismatic....... Cole Dickson would stop by on occasion and everyone would debate who played better(but Cole was rarely sober in those days). There is little debating who was better in their prime though,Cole may have been the best 9 ball player on the planet when he was about 19yrs old.

This thread now has me depressed about the current low level of play in my hometown of Spokane Wa.

With out a doubt

Late 80s early 90s Tommy Sanders Beaumont Texas,

the Players out of Houston I remember Franko ----- cant remember his last name , Smokey when he came through town but i believe Smokey was out of Misssissippi Both Strong Strong Players

I would say the best I got to see on a regular basis was Nikki V. It would take him about 6 min. to get the cue ball ready for the break then run out like water. He and Shorty would come in every Wed night. I would walk Shorty's dog Pal for him while he drank his "ice water" as he put it. I got to see Shorty late in his life but he could still get around the tabel great. Now thats a guy that had stories.

When I started playing pool competitively around 1990 Bernie Mikkelson was the best in Western Canada and that did not change till some time in the early 2000's or so due to his semi-retirement. Now he is simply the best cue maker in Western Canada IMHO.

Ours was a tough one:rolleyes:. In the 70's and 80's, it was normal to find Irving Crane, Mike Sigel, Larry Hubbart and Pat Howey knocking balls around at Ridge Billiards here in Rochester. Yeh, real tough!

There was 6 real good players around here all the time 20 years ago Denny Searcy and Tony Watson were the best for the cash in that order with Brady Norris a close third . With Cliff Joiner the best at one pocket, but played 9ball great also and Ron Parks and Jaybird (Jason Brown). There was a lot of others in action at Mothers and Passtime here in Charlotte that lived in NC like Earl, Archer, Hillbilly, Coltrain and the SC boys, Stevie Moore, Tony Elin, Grady and Fountain Inn Red Willis.--Leonard

Javier Franco was his name....hes still around , but hes had 2 strokes....Not the same anymore

Joey Gold was one of the better players among the guys I saw frequently back in the 60's on the north side of Chicago and 'burbs. But there were a lot of guys I would run into at various places that I wouldn't care to match up with, especially at Bensinger's.

Now I'm the best player in my pool room, but only because it's in my house. :o
