Right now I'm hitting with a 5280 sneaky pete that swerves like hell. I'm looking into a new cue but I don't know if it should be a custom or just a production cue with a good shaft. I'm leaning towards a Dominiak but other than that I'm clueless. All advice needed, thanks

Call Joe at Nielsen's Billiards (an ebay store). I'm sure he has a uniloc qr lucasi there somewhere and a matching ring original 314 shaft. For about $300, its a total steal. I already have one.

Travis, if you have the means, try to hook up with some local AZ'ers or find somewhere you can test a large array of cues in your pricepoint....take some time, get a feel for what you really like....

Unless you pay some type of crazy-high mark-up over retail price, $300 will buy you a TON of cue.......take your time, get something you really like....shop around locally and on the net

IMHO, if you can find a well used players cue that has a few battle scars, but is straight and good for play, you could walk into a much more expensive cue for that same price...

I am a fan of Lucasi and Viking for that price range. Viking is cool because you can do a bit of customization. I took a G02 and got it with a wood to wood joint, natural color stain, and a brown wrap for about $175. It plays nice, looks good, and isn't too hard on the wallet.

can u do $400

I know you said $300, but if you drop around $400, you get a crazy playing sneaky pete (Jim Buss or Bob Frey instantly come to mind, both of which play lights out)

Strictly in your price range I'd suggest a Viking, as others have, and also a very plain Joss is a nice hitting cue that is not too bad cost-wise. The Joss tends to hold value SLIGHTLY better in the secondary market too- so if you pan to up-grade again in the future, that might be a consideration.

Now, like the poster before me, if you could eat out at the burger joint a few less times thins month, I can get you into a custom made Mace from Rick Howard. You have a lot of design control (such as length) that you will not have with most production cues (although I beleive Joss does over-length shafts). The other nice thing about the MAce is, you will have it forever. If you come into some money for a custom playing cue, you will always have that fantastic Mace break/jump cue in your bag...

So, as others have said, try out as many cues as you can. Blind, I think these are your best choices.

This type of question comes up frequently here, its a good question but its also like asking a 100 people ' I have $20.00 what should I buy for lunch'
you will get a 100 different suggestions and they may all be good.

You can get a nice custom in the sale section here for around that price, usually from a 'lesser known' cue maker, notice I didn't say lesser quality, its just that for one reason or another the cue makers name isn't 'out there' quite yet.

Example: I don't know if this is still for sale but its practically a give a way for $330.00

Everytime this question is asked the op ends up with more opinions than he could ever try.So I'll throw my opinion out there as well.
Your Original inclination to purchase a Dominiak is right on.
Bill makes a solid players cue & has exceptional customer service.

Just notice you are Jim L from Connecticut. So am I.

I am also out of my mind and expect to be back in five minutes; maybe a bit longer...

VERY small world isn't it?

Are you sure you are not my alter ego or something?

Are YOU the one who's been kissing my girl!?!

Just kidding. Weird though...:)

call richard neighbors 513 830 4321.
i have played with his cue for over 10 years.

If you like the 5280 butt (the way it looks, feels, its' balance), why don't you invest in the business end of the cue, the shaft? The joint you have and the collars can be matched for a small additional cost and put either an OB or 314 on it and you'll have THE BEST performance of ANY cue....(and a little left over of the $300) !

Whatever you decide to get, you can get a great deal on used cues right now. You can get a good quality cue for a lot cheaper than a new cues. There are lots and lots of great values now. Ebay or the section of the message board where people buy and sell pool stuff.

lol do you self a favor and get a custom cue. that doesent mean have a cue maker make you a custom cue, and that DEFINATLEY does NOT mean go buy a dumb laminated shaft that will screw up your game. Just simply go to the for sale section and take a look at the listings for a decent deal. Heres the thing, you want to buy a cue that if you dont like the way it hits after playing with it for 3 weeks then sell it. Remember, the important thing is to buy a cue that wont drop in value right when you buy it, which is pretty much all production cues. Keep this rule in mind and it will lead you to the right cue that you will play with for a long while. by doing this now i am shooting with a Omega/dpk, and the first cue i had was a low end custom cue from Poorboy in Houston, TX.

My suggestion is to start a thread in the Wanted/For Sale forum stating that you are looking/wanting to buy a used Bob Frey SP.

You should be able to find one in excellent condition for ~$300 or a bit less.

Or you could buy a brand new one for slightly more money.

Find a pool player who goes busted...offer him $50 for his cue! It shouldn't take more than a month or two...

Cue maker Chuck Starkey is worth considering. Most of his cues start at a bit above $300, but he may have something on hand that he'd part with for $300. Chuck posts here a lot, and sells cues here (he's Desi2960); do a search and you'll learn about his style of cue and peoples' opinions about them. Best of all: he has a satisfaction guarantee, which is good for someone in your position who's early in the learning curve about cues. Good luck with your search; should be fun.

I think it is hard to beat the Dominiak sweet 16 at the price you get it for. I have one of his cues, and would definately recommend it. I have not used the Dominator shaft, but I hear good things about that also.
