Hi everyone, I just started playing pool and I want to get better. What is the best basic practice strategy to get better? I can make the balls sometimes, but sometimes I miss it really bad.

Sounds like a case of Bangeritis. You may want to get that checked out. Seriously I would get some lessons if I were you. Probably Jeremy Jones or Charlie Hillbilly Bryant. They are 2 top pros that live in TX. YOu need good sound findamentals if you want to be any good at this game other wise you'll just be a banger.

Take some lessons from randyg at his pool school in dallas. He'll work with you and give you some practice drills.

Practice straight in shots, start close then move the cue ball farther away,a straight stroke makes a straight shooter.

Quit!!!

I would try starting atlantic before I try pacific on the table. :p
But really, put the cue ball about a foot from the pocket and the cue ball 6 inches back and then when your ok pocketing the ball 10 out 10 then move it back another 6 inches and keep going until you are doing it full table.

This is fun

  :grin-square:  I'm glad you caught that. I know how to spell specific. I was continuing our game I couldn't resist.

Buy this book it is one of the best. 99 CRITICAL SHOTS IN POOL. Its by Ray Martin. One of the best books ever. It also is full of shots and drills to practice.

You wouldn't happen to have a copy I could borrow, would you?

Robert Byrne's instructional video is invaluable for a beginner. Becoming a good player takes a lot of time and effort. You can do it though if you just don't try to rush it. Matter of fact you'll get to where you want to be quicker if you don't try any shortcuts. Learn the basics now and they'll last you a lifetime.

Even if you don't have a pro player in your area I'm sure there are some good players at your pool hall that will help you out. Starting with the owner is a good way. He may not be a great player but he probably plays good enough to help you with what you need..........and if he's concerned at all about his business he shouldn't say no to helping you out.
MULLY
and plenty of Los Lonely Boys in the background helps.

good advice, table length stop shots are how i warm up before playing the ghost. I dont start till i make 9 straight on my tight 9 footer. Then i know im shooting straight.

I will not tell you techniques but recommend a DVD Under $20.00, by Jerry Jerry Briesath that is available from many places like Mueller. Mast 80% of what Jerry Teaches, and his Drills, and you will play better than 90% of the pool player you encounter.

This guy has been teaching for years and years. He will treat you right.

As has been said their are many books and tapes/cd's/dvd's with Rober Byrnes being at the top of the heap.

BUT... even though books are great you need someone to actually watch your stroke and then show you how to do it correctly. Do it before you develop lots of bad habits. If you really want to learn you MUST have lessons. Home Page:

Edit: In conjunction with lessons my ole coach, God rest his soul, had me shoot straight in shots daily pocketing 100 balls a day. No other pool allowed. Just make at least 100 straight in shots a day, every day.

I did that for over 6 months averaging about 150 balls a day. I'm compulsive.
