Best Pro Advice You've Gotten

I know a lot of the posters on this forum have had the good fortune to play with and learn from some great pro players (and great unknowns). What would you say is the best piece of pool advice you ever got from one?

Two good pieces of advice from a pro:

"just relax... let it happen"

"Jesus! Ease up! You could have made that one in the next state", right after I banged a ball into the back of a pocket.

Mosconi

Some other forms of competition, I can remember a single sentence that caused a huge jump in my performance. I can't say that about pool. What probably caused the greatest jump in my performance was watching Willie Mosconi play on TV one day many years ago when he was on stroke. Before that I thought I practiced cue ball control. In truth, until that day I didn't understand what cue ball control could be.

"Think when you stand. When your bridge hand hits the table, shoot."

"A shot made with a poor stroke is just an accident!"

"If you can't get shape on your next shot, DUCK on the first one, it's not a sin."

My all time favorite came from Mr. Mosconi. "When in trouble, COMPACT!"

advice

From Jimmy Caras when I was 14:

Learn to control the cue ball, its 70% of the game.

this one was very simple. it was about 10 years ago

i asked what it took to be a champion, answer was very simple

"don't miss"..........still working on it :D

pool wisdom

Learn to hit the cue ball in the center....If you can't hit the center when you want to ,what makes you think you can hit it anywhere else accurately.

Pool is 90% mental....the other half is in your head!!!! :D :D

It's been 20 odd years ago, but I'll never forget it.

Buddy Hall was at a local bar and he said, "The only hard shot you should ever have in a game of pool is your first one".

If.......................

"If There Is A Lot - Win A Lot,
If There's A Little - Win It All"!

Pool is a simple game. Don't make it so complicated.

That there I had to figure out on my own but it is the #1 revelation that quantum leaps the game of pool once a person truely realizes it and believes it. If you want to shoot great pool you MUST beleive it is a simply game and play it as such.

Never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever,(pause to catch breath)ever, miss the money ball -- Ronnie Wiseman

wasnt from a pro but.

play the table not your opponent.

stay down on your shot.

Chalk is free.

Striking the cue ball is a throwing motion. Natural Ball.

Take what the table gives you.

When playing safe, don't just try to hide the cueball, think of where the object ball is going as well as the cueball.

If the safety is just as hard or harder than the shot, go for the shot.

What's the difference between a good pool player and a great pool player?
A good pool player shoots the shot until he makes it.
A great pool player shoots the shot until he doesn't miss.

God, give me the strength to hit it easy.

I was given the following advice from Cisero Murphy when I was 15 years old.

"Pool is a game, not an occupation. Finish school."

"Don't be obsessed with the game of pool. If you're going to obsessed about anything make sure it's intelligence or kindness - not pool."

I think he made a lot of sense.

"Don't bother trying to make a living at this game".

Sorry, couldn't help it. : )

U J Pucket told me to be a Golf Pro, so I did. I was also a high paid engineer for 30 years. Now I am having fun helping Pool Players to play better.
