Best Table for One Pocket Matches???

We are wanting to put in a new one pocket table. When I suggest a Diamond Pro, I heard an enormous number of complaints. This shocked me because more and more pro tournaments are being played on Diamonds. I figured if all these guys go to Louisville every year; they would want to practice on the same table used down there. I have wanted to put in a Diamond Pro for 3 years now and everyone gets upset every time I mention it. They are playing on an Old Gold Crown 3 that has seen better days. Most of my regulars would rather play on that table than a new Diamond or Oldhausen table. I seriously don't get it. Are the pockets really that bad on a Diamond for playing one pocket and getting the balls out of the jaws? Just curious what type of table you currently play on and what table you would LIKE to play on. Anyone play on Kim Steele tables? Thanks guys....and gals? Although I cant remember more than about 2 women ever playing one pocket in our room.

If it's your place, I say put in the table you want. If you put it to a vote, you will never decide. Trust me, they will ALL play on it. Just make sure it is set up right, and it should be Derby City tight.

Hello craig and how are things going back ther in St. louis? I kinda understand what your going through. I have been hearing similar comments about the Diamond tables. While the Diamonds are certainly the easiest to work on or recover and level, it appears that many people do not like the way the tables pocket a ball.

For some reason people preffer the Brunswick Gold Crown IV over any other table around here, and that is what I am going to upgrade to in the near future.

My Table of choice was always Gold Crown III or IV, until I played on a Diamond Pro Am. Now I own a Pro Am and love every minute of it!

Get a Pro-Am or Pro, they both hit great. The one feature I would like to see on the Diamond is a built in ball rack. I have ball return on mine and have to keep score on a board or drop the balls on the floor.:(

Which of your old timers are going to the DCC? Besides Jeremy & Kip, who would enjoy a Diamond or realize the quality difference?
 
I have played on all kinds of tables and my personal preference is a Gold Crown. I play once or twice a week on a Diamond and although it is a nice table, I don't like the pocket cut.

Put in what you like and it will get used!!

Maybe it's just me but I have a difficult time digging out some balls from the pockets on the Diamond tables.

It's seems to me to be because how deep the slate goes back into the pocket. I wind up giving up some balls that I would normally dig out.

Instead of taking a chance of something going wrong and selling out more than just that ball I wind up conceding it.

The table is great for all other games. One pocket, I'm not so sure. If you're a true one pocket fan, go to a local establishment that has one and try it for a couple of weeks. It's a big investment. Best to be sure.
 
i remember about 14 years ago at Cue-Topia in Vegas Fred put in a Diamond as a second 1P table and if everyone liked it was planning on putting in one more, it just sat there and got dusty after the first 2 weeks. Vegas is the 1P city and the diamond table wasnt a success, the GC's were. Personally I like the quality of Diamond tables, lights etc, but I hate the way the pockets take balls and getting balls out of them is a disaster, the shelf is somehow different, I would ask around alot before buying a Diamond table. The 7' Diamonds are great.

lol. I was thinking the same thing. And IIRC -- after playing in the DCC 1pocket for many years myself -- there is not one single player at C&C that plays in the DCC 1pocket. Other than that issue, you've only got Big Ed there that would moan about any change to *any* table just because that's his pet table.

The 1pocket table C&C currently has in place plays like crap. I told them that years ago and privately most of the regulars I've spoken to say it's even worse now than when I use to frequent the joint, but are scared to say so to management because they're a little touchy about that :-)

My triple shimmed Diamond 9ft with Simonis.

I hear The Pool House in Marietta has like a quadruple shimmed diamond.
 
I've always been a fan of the Gold Crowns, but does anybody know how that Diamond near the front door at Shooters in Olathe is set up? I haven't played on enough Diamonds to know if that's the standard setup or if they made some changes. Either way, that seemed to me to be an excellent configuration for 1-hole. IIRC, the pockets were around 4.5", maybe a hair smaller.

I think the Diamond favors more defensive players, and the gold crowns favor a more offensive player. I like either table just fine, as long as it is level, has good rails, and tight pockets. I notice a couple of posts talking about double and triple shimmed diamonds, which seems odd to me. One of the reasons diamond tables are so great for one-hole is that they are one of the only companies that will cut the rails extra long so that you can get extra tight pockets without the problems inherent with adding additional shims.

I have played several hours on the two new Diamond Pro-Cut tables at Shooters in Olathe and I believe that the are a little tougher to dig balls out of, but compared to the multiple shimmed Gold Crowns that they replaced the pockets on the Diamonds are actually a little easier to pocket balls. During the tournament that last weekend I play a little one pocket on some of the Gold Crowns with fairly receptive pockets and I would say that I prefer the Diamond table for any game. I also played on a Kim Steel table about 8 years ago in Oklahoma City and I thought it was the hardest table on the face of the earth, the pockets did not really appear to be that tight but if you hit any of the rail near the pocket the reaction was similar to shooting with pool balls on a snooker table. I am starting to break out in a sweat just thinking about all the damn balls that I hung up on the Kim Steel:eek: :eek: :mad:

Thank you. I remember the same thing. When I talked to a Diamond rep last year, ( I think it was an engineer, not a salesman) I THINK he said that all rails go into the cutter blank and then routed to whatever specific size you request. If Greg/Diamond reads this and wants to correct, please feel free. That was what I remember from our conversation and why I preferred a Diamond. You can get the 4 7/16" dimension without extra shims. :rolleyes: I don't play one pocket well enough to know what shooting styles favor one table over another. Just trying to be more informed.
 
This is a common complaint about Diamond Tables, but it is one that I do not understand. Why do players feel like they HAVE to be able to go rail first to give up all balls in the jaws. Is this in the 1hole rules? Of course not.

dabarbr, is right though that IF someone were used to GC's they would have to adjust their play to play intelligently on a Diamond. However, this adjustment is a smaller adustment then the adjustment all players currently have to make to play intelligently on the table in question. My 0.02.

Craig- I think they might have a pro cut pockets which are deeper with a longer shelf. You are right that the rails seem better 'around' the pockets so the pocket itself is more true than a shimmed up gold crown.

My point to you was that the group of players that have been @C&C for years are definitely people that don't like change. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You obviously have the best group of table mechanics in the city so I would suggest that you simply put some time into re-working the table you have & keep everyone happy.

If you still have your doubts, put a poll sheet in the room & let the players decide.

I haven't seen AE Schmidt's mechanics in action but I have seen many of the other St. Louis table mechanics do their thing and IMO, Q-Ball Thiemann gives the other St. Louis table mechanics the 7 and the break when it comes to working on a table (if anyone needs a phone #, PM me and I'll look it up). And from what Ive heard, everything that C&C's mechanics can do to that table has been done and it still plays the same...

Greg/Diamond contacted me personally the other day to talk to me about Diamond tables. He read this post and wanted to give me his views on how his tables match up agains Brunswick. This impressed the hell out of me. A man who is so dedicated to the sport of pool, and believes so strongly in his product to call a customer personally. This will be updated as things progress, but I am going to put in a new Diamond Pro in our room very soon. Details coming up.......

TAP TAP TAP congratulations on updating your room . Tough choice when the customers pay the bills, but I still think this is a step in the right direction.

If I was to ever open a room it would have nothing but Diamonds (except for a Gabriels 3-C table).
