beta blockers/Propranolol & pool

I was on one for a year. Not worth it, didn't help my game. I never got restful sleep that whole year. I'd sleep, but it didn't feel like it when I woke up in the morning.

Didn't help my game at all, just made me miserable.

Clearly an advantage. It revolutionized my public speaking. Greatly helped my poker and pool games as well.

as you mention, this has been studied a Lot in the music performance world. i've played serious golf, pool, and music, and let me tell you right now, nothing -- NOTHING -- is anything like being on stage alone in front of 500 people and the only thing those eyeballs and ears are getting is You.

that said, i finally settled on a much more benign and very effective solution: eat a ripe banana 45 minutes before the gig. it contains a mild but effective and completely natural beta blocker. works great, no side effects.

You are right...

There is nothing like playing music in front of 500 people and hearing them yell for YOU... That is the best feeling in the world...

I can only imagine what it must be like to do the same for 20 or 50K people.

I've been doing music stuff since I was 12. The worst were the big competitions in front of thousands, and a panel of (possibly crooked) judges. So bad it's difficult to stand, even. I did that until I was about 18.

After that, I can take a nap on stage if I wanted. Before I got to that point I was wondering why I got into this music thing. But at some point you're confident that if you screw up, nobody cares anyways.

Junior Brown used to say "it's not a mistake if you do it twice" :)

Beta blockers only work under pressure to keep your heart rate down ( as in the final round of a golf tourney in contention ). If you're not under pressure, they will make you sleepy and lose energy. Check you're 'resting heart rate ' and blood pressure before using them. They can hurt you.

Weed, speed, coke and booze. Was great for me gambling playing pool until I turned 60. Then my whole body flew apart. Went to the doctor 3 times in about 50 years...now I have to go once a month. JT

If you do a forum search for propranolol (and it's common misspelling "propanolol") you will find many past discussions.

I have a heart condition I have to take two pills everyday for. One of them is a beta-blocker (Metoprolol, which is a generic form of Toprol XL).

I use to take this pill at night before going to bed for no other reason than I had read that many heart attacks occur in the early morning hours.

After I found out that one of the side effects of the drug is that it has a "calming" effect....I started taking it right before league play would begin to calm my nerves a bit. It did help (I say "did" because I am not playing in a league at this time). I remember how, before I started taking the pill before league play, I'd just about blow a gasket after my opponent slopped in their third ball of a particular game....or sh*t-in a 9-ball for a win. But after taking the pill before league play, it kept me on a more even-keel when stuff like that happened....kind of put me in a don't-give-a-sh*t attitude. I will say though that I could not take the beta-blocker with any form of pain relievers (such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol)....because mixing the two would put me in a state to where my focus was off....nor would I drink any alcohol until after my match was over.

I figured that I HAD to take this pill everyday, pool or no pool....so why NOT take it earlier in the evening if it's going to "kill two birds with one stone"??? I didn't, nor do I now consider it cheating. It is prescription medicine that I must take daily. Whose business is it anyway what time of the day I choose to take it?

If it is against any league/tournament rules for me to take my meds....then I would just have to sit that one out. I choose to live.

If nerves are the main thing holding you back, I guess they could help.
I think most of us are held back by a lack of dedication.
Something that lets you practice for hours with full focus would be even more useful.
ADD meds maybe?

My doctor had me on too much Atenolol for blood pressure.
I may of had less anxiety playing pool, but my heart rate was down to 40.

I can tell you from experience, if you have even have mild COPD, beware. My cardiologist mistakenly prescripted a beta blocker for me, I started them on a Sat. and spend all day Sun in the ER, couldn't breath had to have Oxygen until the beta blockers wore off.

beta blockers

I am scheduled for surgery the 7 th of May and was put on Metoprolol about one week ago.

Metoprolol ( beta blocker does make me want to take naps and not be on my feet as much as I can .

I try enjoy pool and have fun, don't need anything except my health to do that.

I would advise people not to look toward any drug to enhance there performance.

Most of the time the side effects and after effects are life threating.
