You can try putting an edge on a piece of HSS. This was a couple of bucks[/QUOTE]
You will discover that the HSS does not hold a keen enough edge for all tips.
The knife steels have a very fine grain, specifically developed to get a very sharp edge.
My suggestion, is buy from Tiger products the right tool correctly sharpened.
It does 2 things, supports a company that has a proven commitment to the industry,
They will be more willing to assist you with any inquiries you may have about using their products or tools.
A good sharpening stone is also invaluable as well.
I use several tools for tips. I have a left hand and a right hand blade, a ceramic paring knife, willards tip tools and a home-made diamond compound tip shaper. As well as a stanley blade holder for parting off the old tip, or cutting tips in half for customers who only want a half tip installed. Then 3-4 months latter get the other half installed.
