I just want to say Barry deserves some kudos for opening up the US Open to the women. I think this will greatly improve the attendance, both in terms of players & spectators.

Thanks Shannon for getting BB's attn!

Tap Tap Tap!

It's certainly going to spice things up! Hopefully single players like Donny Mills will be able to stay focused! ;) ;) ;)

Let's see, last year there were 216 players IIRC. I have to think that # will grow a good bit. Is a full field 256? That seems reachable.

Assuming I give the field a break and don't play ;), as a spectator I KNOW it will make me more excited. I also believe this will be good for increased spectator attendance, sales for vendors ---> good for sponsors and Barry!

Four thumbs up Barry! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I know there's a "women's only" version (although how you can call that "open" I can't understand, LOL)

At every level of this sport EXCEPT the pro level, men and woman play in the same fields. I played a local KF stop last weekend and there were women playing in that.

I am sure this can of worms has been discussed in some other thread, but were women TRYING to enter the US OPEN and being told they weren't allowed?

Pool is one sport with NO legitimate reason for any such special treatment or segregation. Pay your $, take your chances.

Women haven't been allowed in previous years.

With the WPBA in turmoil, a really smart business decision. The Women may have no where else to play at the pro level! Way to go Barry!

With the expensive entry, I can't see more than 15 Women entering it, if that. I'm curious to see how many show up. I hope I'm wrong.

Jasmin, might be the only one with a actual chance of snapping it off.

Don't count Karen out either. She has played among the men for quite a few years and has done REALLY well.

Koop - hoping to see Sarah finish high if she plays

You're probably right, the $500 entry will bring pause to some interested parties. It had been $600 though, so hopefully that decrease will be a positive influence on player attendance.

Not to be rude but no woman has a chance to snap off the US Open. It's winner break from the box. They just can't get there but they can beat a few champs along the way for sure.

Excuse me but what does "Open" mean? Kudos to Barry for making it a real Open. Men may have an advantage due to strength but I give women the edge on finesse. There's great men players and there are quite a few great women players. This should be a very interesting event. I just love to see good play. Good luck to all - men and women.

If there was an WPBA tour event around the time of the US Open a lot of the women from other countries would come early or stay after their wpba event to play in it. If there is no wpba event around that time I only see a handfull of the top players entering the US Open. I'd say at this time about a dozen will enter. But it's all good. Barry did the right thing and if a few of the women do well more will enter next year. Johnnyt

Good

This side of the contoversy is irrelevant and off topic. It is a good thing that any human-being is allowed to play.

Where did you get this information on the "strength advantage for men" and the "finesse edge for the women"??

I'm not sure if the entry will have that much of an impact. In case you guys didn't know, entry to a WPBA event is $500. Granted it is easier to cash in the WPBA events but I think some of the top women will play. Hopefully the WPBA will allow the players to play. I'm not sure what the sanctioning rules are.

I know I would like to play. With not much going on and getting an opportunity to play against the world's best...it is pretty much priceless (or $500). If we aren't allowed to play, I will at least be there watching!

As for a woman not being able to win, I agree with that at this time. I think that allowing women to play will bring pool one step closer to being completely genderless. Right now women and men have completely different styles (with the exception of a few). If women played with men more often I think you would see a huge change in style and aggressiveness. Just my opinion though.

I do know that if Barry does decide to open the US Open up to women, we will be very proud to put Sarah's name into the fray (assuming she wants to play in the event of course). We've never had the opportunity to have a player represent PoolDawg in the US Open and as a sponsor we see this as an excellent opportunity for exposure in an event that we don't normally reach.

That open letter on AzB headlines looks pretty official to me.

Yep, I just saw the letter. I knew I should've checked the AZ Billiards news page before posting. I've got a note out to Barry now asking for details, but unless there are scheduling conflicts expect to see Sarah at the US Open.
