*** Biggest bar table event ever was? ***

"Omaha John" Shuput won the Miller Lite World Series of Tavern Pool and it paid $25K

Back around 82 or 83 there was the World Series of Tavern pool put on by Miller Lite.
For $10.00 you could win a local and got a regional and win airfare, hotel and entery to a $25,000 added 8 ball and a $15,000 9 ball.
The first was won by John ( Omaha John) Shuput with Ernesto Donminguez second.
I could be very wrong about the added money and my memory is not what it once was.
I think there were like 1200 in the 8 ball and 1400 in the 9 ball. It was at Ceasars in Vegas and after 9 days, I was sick of the place.
oh, and Gary Pinkqowski won the first 9 ball.
That was the greatest event I have ever seen.

I believe you're right, this is the one I would guess was the biggest. My road partner {at the time} "Omaha John" Shuput won the Miller Lite World Series of Tavern Pool and it paid $25,000 for first place, they had the total at $200,000 in total prize money. Steve Mizerak was the host that year.

Two years later I won the same tournament, however, a week before the event there was an issue and Miller Lite pulled out and Bud Lite took it over. The prize money was cut in half, but they still had the event, and {of course} ;) that's the one I finished 1st in.....there was 756 Players in the Eight Ball, and they didn't have the 9 Ball that year.

I played in this event back in 1991...by then it was the Coors Light World Series of Bar Games...same set up, you won a local qualifier, then went to a regional tournament, then the Nationals. It was only BB 8 Ball and soft darts by then. I placed just high enough in New Orleans to get airfare to Vegas for the Nationals, but the Army decided I needed to go to the National Training Center instead...what torture, sitting in my Hummer in the desert, with the lights of Vegas glowing over the mountains...:( The regionals in New Orleans had about 150 players from all over the country (I guess they took local winners from wherever, some were from as far away as New Jersey, I recall). Full of pros, some on the tour at the time. Race to 5, my two losses I never got a shot...both my opponents whitewashed me with 5 packs.

Awesome photo's CJ! Thanks for sharing.

The biggest bar event ever was invention of the first bar rules and organization of small groups of players who continue fighting back against WPA's and BCA's grip.

Almost all correct, except it was 100K guaranteed purse in each division, with the winner getting 25K! And that was 30 years ago. Yours truly played the first year, finishing tied for 33rd and won $900 in the Eight Ball. The second year I was the head referee.

CJ, you got 15K the year you won. Right? I was the head ref that year.

I think my end was $7500.(TR from Florida staked me), and I thought that was nothing compared to what I'd been winning on the road gambling back then.

Yes, Jay, you seemed to be everywhere back then and we've shared a lot of "historic moments," between the California/Vegas tournaments, and the Million Dollar Challenge (Jay racked the balls with Earl won the Million Dollar Challenge running 11 racks in a row).

Believe it or not, Jay, I still have the finals from that tournament on VHS tape....I've been going to upload it to You Tube. I was 21 years old when I won the World Series of Tavern Pool and I played Bill Eigel (sp?) in the finals. I played flawless in the finals, and I remember it was nerve racking in front of several hundred people.

I went back "underground" after that tournament and didn't play another tournament for several years. Gambling was too lucrative, I was winning over a hundred thousand a year in those days, and it was exciting by any standards.

I trust you are very right, too much sleep since then for me.
I remember John and I were sitting out front the night before the finals just dreaming of winning.
he was a class guy and I enjoyed being around him. He made one hellof a shot to beat Ernesto.
I think that was the same year Surfer Rod went off to Allen Hopkins playing last pocket 8 ball at the Serene Room. At $1000 per game, Rod lost like 22 games. Allen got out from any imaginable place. Rod climbed on the table and jacked up from any imaginable place.

I have 4 of those mugs, sitting in my living room.

Found this in an old box!

Omaha John would have won in 1982. I played in the 9 ball in 1983, and got a bye the first round. My opponent was either gonna be, Ernesto or a guy whose name I can't recall off the top of my head. I do recall, he was a former world straight pool champ. He beat Ernesto, then beat me too. This was the event Gary Pinkowski won. My buddy had him beat, and missed a 9 ball, that cost him the set. $200,000 purse in the 80's was a ton of money... Well, I guess it still is actually.

The cups I have say "$200,000 Lite Beer World Series of Tavern Pool" from 83... The ones from 84 say $300,000....I don't know if that was the number they "hoped" for, or what was guaranteed

So, does anyone have the results from the 1990 Coors finals in Vegas.??? I don't have a copy of that, not sure where they published them.

Jay do you know who won in 1990???
I have been trying to find any print on the 1990 Coors version, and am coming up dry.
I don't remember who I played in the finals. She won, but second was $4k. Karen Wold got 3rd I believe. No idea what guys got to top in their division. Surprised it did not show up in the magazines.
