"Gentlemen,

The International Cue Collectors’ show has been scheduled for November 5, 2006 at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Lake Las Vegas. This is the third cue collectors’ show and will be the largest and the best.

The cue collectors’ show will be open to the public on Saturday November 5, 2006 from 12:30pm until 5:00pm. This will be a chance to see the most elaborate and expensive cues ever displayed. Admission is $20.00.

For those of you not familiar with Lake Las Vegas it is about 15 miles from the Las Vegas airport. The area has all the amenities of a Ritz Carlton as well as 3 championship golf courses, a casino and a shopping village reminiscent of a small Italian town. Shuttle service is available from the airport.

bill will be having a full computer demo on the evolution of a cue design starting with ideas culled from collectors and builders alike. it will be a cooperative effort. he MIGHT also be handing out a monetary award for the best cue design by the invited. since there has been much discussion about the nature of design, i thought this is a nice idea that at least attempts to quantify something as subjective as
"best" design, and maybe shows off the industry and validates its direction

Two well-known cue makers told me last year that they don't show cues because all of their output is spoken for. They support the show and sometimes attend. But, any time spent creating cues for the show is time not spent fulfilling their order list. HOWEVER, I'm sure that any such cues they created would soon find a home! :D

I would bet that this is also true for Mr. Szamboti.

Can someone tell me more of this cuemaker. I haven't heard of him and was wondering if others knew of his work.

I know I'm probably wrong for asking this, but does anyone know if the collectors mentioned are AZ'ers? It'd be really cool to see who Jimbo and Iconcue are.:D

I don't know about Jimbo, but unless Iconcue has an alias, he is not in the list of collectors above. However, he IS on the distribution list that got the email! Maybe he is just not confirmed yet???Hmmmm. :)

None are A-Z to my knowledge. Cheng (Charles) and Rick Goulden (mtpockets4U) are two of the largest collectors. Tony Martino has an impressive commissioned display. He also has a huge collection of Winchester rifles. Jeff and Jim are not listed. I'll e-mail Jeff him and see if he plans on going.

I defintely want to attend as a spectator. If anyone else is going, let's connect up. I'll probably make a family vacation out of it.

The Ritz is a newer resort next to the Hyatt Lake Las Vegas. It's a very classy resort atmosphere about 20 or 30 minutes from the strip in the Lake Las Vegas development. It's a good family area, beaches, boats, spa, outdoor activities. These hotels are not at all tacky like a lot of the Vegas hotels, they are very nicely done. Rooms at either hotel will be pricey, but it's a good family vacation spot..

Edit: I found a German cuemaker named Arthur. His cues are : Arthur Queues

JimBo & Icon are not on the list, Icon is new to collecting (just a year) and has never attended a show, I have been to everyone since the first in NM, but have not decided yet if I will display at the LV show. Hope that clears up any questions.

I don't know who they are and don't want to call them liars, but my bet would be they either weren't invited or there are other reasons (read politics) as to why they didn't go. Many of the cue makers who show up don't have cues to sell and have long lists. the show isn't to sell cues persay, there are other reasons for cue makers to show up, and many of the guys use it as an excuse to deliver cues to buyers. In Palm Beach Bill Schick had 1 cue that he had made (W&W) and another that was a collectors that he displayed, he wasn't the only one there with nothing to sell. The shows primary intent is not to sell cues that day.

OK. I know this getting a little off topic but I'm testing my memory here and was wondering if someone could help me out. I remember seeing a cue a few years ago that was a Cohiba (cigar) tribute. It even had cigars not inlayed but actually carved into the forearm. It was ugly indeed and something that was nothing more than a gimicky show cue.

Anyway, I wanna say that this was a Bill Stroud cue. Am I right?

-Oh, and JimBo; I've heard through the grapevine that your collection focuses primarily on purpleheart. Is that true? If so I have to say, I have the utmost respect for that. Its a beautiful wood and to center a collection around a type of wood rather than a cuemaker is very cool.

The Cohiba cue was indeed a Stroud invention, very cool cue and unique design, but I hear it didn't role straight (LOL)

I hate the grapevine, but yes I am very much into PH and I happen to respect Marcus's focus on one maker, as a matter of fact I have respect for anyone with a focus, I happen to have 2 and I try to join them when I can, but it doesn't always work. One thing I also try to do is diversify and spread it out to many makers, I do have my favorites, but I would have been much better off if I did shorten my focus on a few guys, but cue collecting can never be about investments or you're doing it wrong and you'll end up very disapointed.

I have to agree. Marcus' focus on Tascarella is also something I admire. In my future, I can see a fairly sizeable collection of Mottey and White cues as well as a group of burl cues. But then again, I'm young and broke so that's quite some ways away!

Politics could be a part of it. However, one of these guys attended the Palm Beach show to attend the cue maker session and look at others' work.

Selfishly, I hope you show, Jimbo. I love purpleheart also and would love to see different ways it can be used.

Curious about one thing..... do you like the purpleheart to be exposed to light so that it becomes "bright" purple, or kept darker? Or, both? Thanks!!

There certainly are some interesting collecting niches.

I know one guy who likes "gambler" style cues, cards and dice. So he collects them from a variety of makers. I think that's neat and one way to spread it around.

Another one collects "Tuxedo" cues (ebony and ivory), every part except the wrap and the shaft has to be one or the other.

Of course I am focused on Palmers, but I also found that there was a lot of tie in with other makers of the era and region, which opened the doors for more of my interests.

Name your poison, Jimbo!
