Blow-up at the Senior Center

We have a partners eight-ball league every Thursday morning. It's been running for many years. It's $3/wk and at the end of the season we divvy up the money and have a pizza party. The league is not under APA or BCA rules.

So, this morning, Henry (from Asia) got angry because his opponents, Sam and Vince were talking. Henry authoritatively asserted that the opponents were not allowed to talk while he was shooting. (Sam and Vince are a couple of sly dog want-to-bes who have used this distraction strategy on me before). Henry then started yelling at everyone, even the organizer, Wally, who recently had his chest cracked open. Then Lee, another character, started yelling louder than Henry. Henry then said he was going to quit the league and wanted his paid money back for October. Rose, who handles the money, wouldn't give it back.

So the question is... (1) Are there any APA or BCA rules that apply here? (specificially about talking on the sidelines), and (2) What would you do if in Henry's place?

The ONLY thing I can suggest is FILM THIS $HIT and be the FIRST to get it on Reality TV!!!

This kind of stuff will knock Duck Dynasty and The Kardashians right off the Entertainment Network.

There is normally no coaching during a team (partners) match...but that's usually during that teams turn. When not shooting, you are allowed to discuss things. I guess if the room is small and others talking might be a distraction, you might throw some rule in about that.

I agree with filming this. Could be pretty entertaining but I doubt it would replace Duck Dynesty...them boys are crazy.

Turns out they caught it all on the security cameras...from two different angles!

I, for one, would love to see Henry and Vince throw down. Old guy fights on You Tube are always pretty hilarious, but I digress...
In the APA I believe the rule is that may talk all you want when it is not your turn at the table. But since your league there has no specific rules, I can't imagine that it makes much difference. Just tell ole' Henry to unbunch his shorts and lighten up, it's a Thursday morning senior center league for cryin' out loud. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be for fun.

Post

Tell the old man to turn off his hearing aid or get a Earl Strickland headset......

The best strategy is for Henry to adopt Sam & Vince's approach. But don't waste time and effort by talking during their pre-shot routine; that's nickel & dime.

Make a very loud noise just as Sam or Vince is ready to shoot. My favorite distraction is an air horn. It's small, cheap and sure to create a yip in anyone's stroke when timed exactly during stroke delivery.

Since the air horn is so portable Henry can walk right up next to Sam and hold it inches from his ear.

If the other players object to an air horn, a good second is a camera flash.

"Hey batter, hey batter....swing!" always worked when we were kids.

Since the participants were not playing under the auspices of any sanction/ rule set, the fact it is/ is not specifically addressed there is irrelevant to those involved.

A great opportunity to establish guidelines for play.

Oh god.

My advice to Henry would be to go stir-shit crazy on the other 2 next time. If your parents call you Henry, you can throw down with the best of them.

But yeah, do film it. Imagine how many peoples days could have been made if you had filmed it? I know mine would have. Nothing quite like a couple of OAPs going at it over something pointless. but yeah, talking whilst the other guy is playing, even if its fun for you and you don't mind it, could come accross as a sign of disrespect, and Henry aint be standin' for that shit no mo'.

First of all, where is this league?

Second, to answer the question of what I would do if I was Henry, every pool hall I've ever been in had a lot of people talking. So if I was Henry I would shoot pool. Another option would be for Henry to turn down his hearing aid.

First of all, where is this league?

The location is being kept secret to protect the innocent. Rose once popped her gum on me and made me miss. But I think it was an accident.

If I was in Henry's place I would have realized that Vince and Sam were trying to pull a (less than ethical) move on me, I would have got up and wait for them to stop talking.

I'm enjoying these replies. We're trying to get Henry back.

If your league is not ACS, APA, TAP, VNEA, UPA, or BCAPL sanctioned, it doesn't matter what rules ACS, APA, TAP, VNEA, UPA, or BCAPL play by; they do not apply to your league. If you want rules, you will need to make up rules that will fit your own league. And they can't be made up on the spot, by Henry or anyone else.

Personally, I think it would be ridiculous to have a rule prohibiting people from talking in a league that is intended for fun.

And yes, the league operator was right in not refunding Henry's money.

What you need is a lady that can beat Henry, that would get him all bunged up. He'd prolly need an enema right on the spot.

Tell Henry when it's his turn to shoot.....

......Turn down his hearing aides. Sam and Vince can talk, Henry can shoot in silence....EVERYONE is happy happy happy.

Gotta love it: Drama at the 'OPH.'

Just do what I did at my 'OPH.' I was shooting in one of our tournaments and this clown started talking to my opponent and giving him advice. I give this gentleman I'm playing plenty of opportunities whenever we match up. He's 87 now and is just a great individual. But anyhow, I stopped in the middle of my stroke and walked over to the table and told this clown to shut the f..... up. After that it was pretty darned quiet.

Same stuff goes on in a number of Ocean County , NJ senior centers, A lot of old guys that used to shoot good. Now they mostly want to mess around and see if they can get there opponent to miss and laugh about it. Some of these guys go as far as standing up behind the guy shooting and doing the Italian hex thing, crazy. I went through about 6-7 of them until I found one where they were serious enough not to .

The card players are the real crazy ones the have an occasional fist fight over their $.10 bet.

Amen, Roger! This is "funsies" league (if you can even call it that). I've played in hundreds of doubles tournaments (unsanctioned), and coaching between the two players was ALWAYS allowed, as long as it didn't get out of hand. Holding up play until the troublemakers shut up is certainly fine, as well. For cryin' out loud...what do you have, 20 people in this 'doubles' league? There isn't even an official 'league operator'. It's just a group of people who get together weekly to play some pool...allegedly for some fun. Sheesh!

This thing with Old Guy fighting is not a big deal, like the day recently a Iwo Jima Survivor Marine, and a Japanese Occupation Army 11th Airborne guy got over it over, who had "DIBS" on their favorite house Cue in our Pool room.

Just like a R & R Area with Inter service rivalry always cause blood shed behind the lines in an R & R Area. Fighting over who was tougher, or some lady of the night both want to be with.

The fight ended with out any punche being thrown, just a lot of yelling. When I told the two WW-II era Vets both close to 90 to act their age or I was going to call the bus to take them back to their wives they were playing pool to get away from.
