I notice more and more tournaments are going with blue cloth. Is it that much better on the eyes and seeing the balls than the green? Johnnyt
 
I have always had green on my home tables. I recently switched to blue and doubt I'll ever go back. It looks much nice, (more modern) and is alot easier to see the balls.

Yes I think it is. I've noticed that the balls on TV are more easily identified on the blue. I've used those configurators (Olhausen, Brunswick) to change the cloth selection, I then look at how dark under the rails and in the pockets the table becomes. Light blue is #1, light green#2. The med blues and greens match up about like the light grays and beiges. Oddly while the black is obviously dark I think it might actually be easy to identify the balls on camera.
 
The first time I played on it, I was surprised at how sharp and clear the balls seemed to look against the tournament blue cloth. Personally, I do like it better.

I've always plays on tables with green cloth and when I got my home table I put Simonis Tourny Blue on it and man there's a difference , a big difference I see alot clearly now , and to me yes it is easier on the eyes.

Like last night at league we played on a Valley table and the cloth was terrible it looked like a forest green and besides the smoke in the bar it was horrible .

I'm even thinking about telling the owners at the bar that I go to down the road to switch there cloth to blue . Because they have a fast cloth but it can't stand the pounding that it gets with all the players , its only been on the table for a few months and it already looks like it's been on there ten years , I think they need to update to a better cloth ( Simonis ) I even thought of splitting the cost .
 
In so far as this relates to Simonis cloth, can I assume most of you are referring to the Tournament Blue? The have 5 different blues.

I thought tournament blue cloth and Aramith Pro balls with the pink 4 and 12 were specifically used for TV because of the sharper contrast for the camera?

What about a tan color like the Sahara centennial or Camel simonis? Would that present a good contrast too?

The blue is brighter than the green and reflects light better. It helps those of us with older eyes to see the edges of the balls better, especially when you are looking at the ball up against the dark underside of the rail. I have also played on and liked the camel (beige) cloth for the same reason.

Hey Turd!! Yes, they are referring to Tournament Blue.

As you have probably seen, my table has Royal Blue on it and it is a tad too dark, even with my great Diamond light.

Next recover I am going with the Tournament Blue!!

Before I got the recent Tourny Blue, I had Simonis Tan. IMO it was great for ball contrast. It might even be better than the blue but I think its too boring for most peoples taste.

I gotta be the black sheep and say I like the green for both historical reasons and the fact I like a more traditional look compared to modern. Not to mention green and natural wood such as a diamond seem to blend better then blue and wood.

For TV Blue is definately easier to determine the ball layout though.
 
Nice pics, Ian. Now I can see the comparison even better. I usually use Simonis green but I recently bought a Olhausen hampton 9 foot and decided to use the centennial sahara colored cloth.
