anyone use a box style case anymore? guess what movie i was watching and i was thinking it would be kinda cool to use a box style case for a while, sorta "retro" or "old school" what do you guys think? does anyone make a nice one?

the ones i've seen were hand carved. they look really cool and if i had a pool table in my house i'd have one of those displaying nice cue. but other than that they're really too bulky to take around for every day use

i found these but i was wondering if anyone knows the quality of these or if there is one of a little higher quality

There are wood and other box cue cases on ebay. Several of them. The nice ones from Huebler are also available on ebay.

I know a guy in the South that was making them out of various woods. Cocobolo, ebony, snakewood, etc....

I made a case out of an old violin case from the 30's that's just big enough to hold 4 butts and 7 shafts.
Gotta be different...lol
(Although people keep asking me where the Tommy Gun is for some reason....)

Those look to be nice cases.

I have a box-style case that a buddy made for me years ago out of 1/4" clear acrylic. He worked at a glass & plastics shop and it was his personal challenge to build one. It was setup so my cue was "suspended" in the middle. It was pretty cool back in the day, but I haven't used it in years.

The problem that I found with using one was the space that you needed to open it up and there was not enough storage area for other things.

A tube case with pouches is more practical for me.

Poolhall Junkies? Color of Money? Hustler?....They all had box cases I do believe. I have a box case that's black on the outside and red felt on the inside, not using it anymore. Send me a PM and we can arrange something, I'll send pictures and if you like it or want it, I'll send it if you cover the shipping.

box case

The Book's raising the practicality issue is right on.

I'm a bit of a gadget boy, and tried one of these cases for about a year. It is a 2x4 case finished in faux checker-plate and is a great conversation starter in any bar or pool hall.

If you WANT action, just carry one of these . :-)

Interior trinket space is limited and setting up and breaking down require more space than is easily available in a crowded setting.

With a tube case, set-up, tear-down and accessory access are all doable within the space occupied by your body.

Also, one is limited to suitcase style carrying, while tube cases are designed to be handled three ways, from the top, like a suitcase and like my old M-1.

OB gadgets: I've ordered a snooker style chalk pouch. I'll report on how that works and how it's viewed here in logger country.

I forgot about that one. Tube cases also allow you to store the cues in assembled to make it easier to move about the room during a tournament. You will see many players carrying them on their back with the cues in them assembled like in a arrow quiver. Just don't forget about them when going thru a doorway.

Also... In addition to needing a lot of room to open it up and get out a cue and/or stuff I found that carrying a suitcase style case in a crowded room was a real pain. It stuck out and bumped everyone and everything. A case has to have a top handle so it can be carried vertically and not hit people/stuff.

I have a couple

I have a couple and use them depending on what cue I am going to use.
They are bulky and not much storage room.
