[Brag] My first run out :)

I'm getting a little sentimental now, so please, let me tell you a story about me and how has my adventure with pool begun.

I started to play seriously in January 2012. We went with my office buddy to the pool hall to play some casual 8-ball. He has played pool for at least 15 years but he had a few years break from playing so when we started in that time, the level of play was - obviously - not too high.

Even though I had been constanly beaten that day - being a natural born smartass - I started to thrash talk my friend, and I remember that the he said that there is no ****ing way for me to beat him in pool.

Now I may be an idiot, but there is one thing I am not, sir, and that, sir, is an idiot. Without thinking much I proposed a bet. I said that I will train, get better and beat him in 10 months from now, I suggested 9-ball and the race to 7 for the symbolic ~30 bucks bet. He lold but he saw I'm serious so he agreed.

That wasn't the reason I started play pool, I had been wanting to play it seriously before that but that bet boosted my motivation significantly.

Since then I've been playing ~10 hours 2-3 times a week, every week (It's not too much, I know, but I'm 30, got wife and have to work to earn money:() I'm also a gear junkie so I already managed to swap a few cues around (yeah, too early), but what's more important, I took my training seriously and I try to be methodical. I read some books, bought myself a PAT workout training and Mika Immonen DVD set, I have been watching a ton of pro matches, I read AZ regularily (though I write not too much).

I started from working on my stroke, learning closed bridge and how to pefrorm a correct follow and draw shot, I'm still not a pro in any of this but I think I might have avoided any bad habits which damage my play later. I'm concentrating now on my PSR and positional play and still have plenty to learn.

Why am I writing all of this ? Today, after 8 months of training, I played alone and I scored my first break and run in 8-ball game. It wasn't any of those ghost ball games, I broke the rack, scored 1 ball, then cleared the table without any ball adjustments. I scored the 8 and then, just for fun, from the position where the CB has stopped, I cleared the rest of the balls on table - so I pocketed straight 15 balls in 1 run.

I know that for most of you it's not much of a feat, but I feel proud, as the table after the break wasn't especially easy (for me) and I made all the shots with careful aiming and positional planning.

Am I an optimist about the match I will have in 2 monts ? Not really, I play with my friend regularily and he recalled most of his skills by now so I know I will have to do my best and that might not be enough, but I sure feel more confident now.

I will definitely put all the effort to beat him and no matter the score, I will keep playing pool, as it sucked me in badly.

Sorry for the long post, felt good and wanted to share that with you.

Rep for your first break n run! Nice job and keep up the good work.

How well does your friend play? Did he ever have a full runout on you when you guys played? It sounds like you're catching up quickly.

Well done!

You have every reason to be proud, and frankly, it is THIS kind of post I'd much rather read than the trash posted of late. Very inspirational!

Keep it up, and you'll be ready for your challenge match in a few months. Make sure, though, that you engage in matches prior to that challenge match date, so that you're not encountering the heat and pressure of competition for the first time on that challenge match date. It can make you weak in the knees when you know it's "Show Time" and you hadn't encountered that pressure before.

Again, well done!

just make sure to practice a little 9 ball strategy in there, too. Best thing i learned was how to judge and pass up a hero shot that in 8 ball might hang up near the pocket and be good for you (blocker or easy shot), but in 9 ball amounts to a sellout often because thats his next ball by the pocket. With non world-beaters, you dont have to hide them necessarily, just make them take the hero shots instead of you.
congrats on your progress, and good luck on your bet!

First one is the hardest. Keep up the training and they should become regular events. Congratulations!

Larry

Grats! And a nice post about it.

Also keep in mind, in 8-ball it's not always the run out from the break that wins. If there are issues, it's better to duck duck duck till something opens up for you. Depending on who you are playing, leaving a cluster or a tied up 8-ball for your opponent to deal with may be better than if your tried to do something and left the other guy an open table.

Nice post and nice accomplishment.

Maybe time to hide your progress from your friend?
stop playing with him from now until the big bet?
catch him off guard

YES INDEED!!!!!!!

Congtatulations!!! I will start this same tedious journey in a month or so. Hope springs eternal. Thank you for inspiring and reassuring me!!!

CONGRATS!!!!!

The first one is really fun, heck they're all fun! Just wait until you do it in competition, you will really enjoy that.

Keep up the good work.

Very well done. :)

I hope he is practicing as well.

If you can run 15 ball like that, and you learn some nine ball strategy, you certainly could beat him.

Keep it up.

Oh, and I certainly wouldn't say your run wasn't significant. You might be surprised how many play leagues for years and can't do that.

.

I had my first break and run 2 weeks ago in our Tuesday 9 ball tournament.
The funny thing is I didn't even know it. My opponet asked, hey did you just break and run?
I have only been playing seriously since March of this year. although I have played occasionaly for some time.
It seems there is a zone where consentration blocks out everthing. for me at least.

You're screwed now. You've been bitten.
Expect to spend too much money on cues, cases, accessories, etc...and probably get divorced one day because of it.

Oh, congrats on your first break and run, btw!

Congrats on your first run !!! As a regular 9-ball player and not 8-ball, if your bet is playing 9-ball then you should practice 9-ball too, you'll learn the strategies a little faster and better. In 9-ball, remember, safety...safety...safety...practice your safeties, they are not as easy as one might think and as a regular 8-ball player it is hard to actually get in your head to intentionally not to try and make a shot.

At least for me, that was one of the hardest transitions from 8-ball to 9-ball was intentionally NOT to make a ball and play safe.

Way to go. You'll do it again & again. Keep working on your game. Have fun.

Even if you lose your match with your buddy, that will be the best $30 you ever spent. It got you motivated to the point of actual progress that you can moniter and see.

Congrats on the BNR. It won't be long until we'll see a thread you've started about your first 2-pack.

Shoot well, my friend!!!

Well done! It's no joke to make 15 in a row, I'd venture to say that's better than 95% of casual players. Even for good players it's not a given to break and run a rack. Any time I manage to run a rack I like to think of it in these terms: For that one game, I could have beaten Efren. :)

Thanks for all your replies, it was a nice read :)

Great advices about 9-ball strategy and yeah, for the beginner those hero shots are too tempting. I think I'll start playng ghost ball 9-game now to improve the game.

How well does your friend play? Did he ever have a full runout on you when you guys played? It sounds like you're catching up quickly.

Well he had a runout once when we played but the truth is he's not playing his best pool yet. He regularily pockets 5-6 balls but he plays very fast (Drago style but with normal stroke ) and is more of a "natural" player rather then PSR guy.

He's a nice guy really and I want to kick his ass only to prove myself, and don't mind losing - after that we probably extend the bet to double or nothing in January 2013 :D

Exactly what I was thinking. It gave me a boosted start.

:) She's the sweetheart. Don't mind me plaing at all, even tried playing with me but she was too impatient.
