Break Cues Heavy or Light? What do you prefer?

Hello All,

I have been trying new things to improve my break. I have read that certain pro players prefer a heavy breaker (Johnny Archer) and some others prefer a light breaker (Mika Immonen). What are your thoughts on this? What weight do you find the most effective and why? Any input the fellow members might have I would find interesting. Thanks...

I've tried several from 16oz to 27 oz. I like my Mace J/B at 60 inches and 22 oz the best.

18 oz BK2 i smash the rack and scare alot of people with the sound it makes

depends

One school of thought is about 2 ounces lighter than your player, and it works for me. My Sledgehammer and I crush the break. Just don't hit it as hard as you can, rather hit the hardest that can while still maintaining control.

I'm very comfortable with my 22oz+ Mezz PB Pro. I can break with lighter cue too, but heavier makes me feel more comfort.

Would ratio of slow vs fast twitch fibers be an issue?

Physique?

As a weight lifter, should I emphasize specific exercises? high vs low reps?

I like mine a couple of ounces heavier than my playing cue. I use a 19 oz playing cue and a 21 oz break cue. Stiffer the better is my preference.

i think the break is more technique than anything...lots of guys like bustamante, archer, etc have killer breaks but not much muscle

Although muscular strength may be of some factor in terms of maximum break speed but I do believe that technique is by far the most important. Taiwanese players have very powerful breaks and a lot of them are small and weak (judging by their physique).

Thanks guys n gals. It seems to me from the comments its a personal feel kinda thing. I have two breakers. One is a McDermott stinger B/J with a phenolic tip that is 18.5oz and the other is a custom that I had made with a picone white diamond tip and has a lead weight system that can be made 19oz to 25oz and is a breaker only. I switch between them depending how I feel. Some times the 25oz crushes the rack with great cue ball control and the same can be true about the stinger. To say the least im consistantly inconsistant. I will practice more on my break stroke with each until I find that happy place I want to be on every break. My playing cue is 18oz so going down 2oz less as suggested might be hard for me to find unless I have another custom made and right now thats not within my means. Thanks for all your comments and input you guys are awesome.

For me its light, i break with 17oz break, and with it I can attain speed that i can't attain on a heavier cue.

For sure it must, forget reps, we're talking plyometrics, tire flips, sledge hammer training, strength ropes, etc....

not many people do that stuff to increase their break power

think boxing punches, a straight right, the mechanics are very similar, or an uppercut as the break hands starts around the same spot

right now im using a 15 oz cue it has a white diamond tip with a phenolic ferrule...
