It's interesting to watch Stevie Moore break, which you can do at propoolvideos.com
He sort of stands up right before he breaks. I believe the back of the stick comes up, in a form of that bicycle motion the filipinos have. It's not a level stroke.

If a person cant seem to remember NOT to smack their hand into the table while stroking, try breaking off the end rail. If you hurt your hand breaking from there...... its your own damn fault..... 
I heard Bert Kinister was teaching a break style a while back that had the result of people winding up and driving their hands right into the table...... Makes absolutely no sense to me.

Going a bit off topic here, speaking of movement that makes no sense. I saw this guy who likes to stomp his front foot on the floor real hard when he breaks, the result of his break is far from impressive. What is worst than looking at his break is that it sometimes scares the living heck out of the guy playing next to him...
Going back to the topic, I think if you watch most of the pros, you will notice that on their final follow through they are quite tall standing up/forward, and their hands are a bit in front of their chests. Usually, their hand is quite a bit above the rail.
The only thing I can understand why your hand is hit is perhaps you are not moving your body much (or too soon) but try to really follow through?

I've seen his videos, got lessons from him personally, watched him give lessons, and I have never heard him say anything like this. Please explain this further. I would be interested in hearing how this came to be.
It was the break he was teaching in the "Big Bang" video, basically thrusting the whole body towards the cue ball. Then in another tape sometime later, he recanted and said NOT to break like that, because too many people were breaking their hand on the edge of the table. Cant remember the second tapes title.

I think this is fairly common. It happens to me occasionally. Yesterday I was watching the World Pool Championships with Efren vs ?? in the round-robins. Efren was on the hill (it was hill-hill I believe) and his opponent left a hanging 8 which Efren dropped ... then, as he lines up the duck-9, his opponent concedes ... but Efren stroked the 9 anyway, hit his hand on the rail, and missed terribly ! They were laughing as it was conceded anyway, but it was kinda funny to see to look on Efrens face when he gassed an easy 9.

I have smashed my hand twice and its doesnt feel to good.The last time i bent my gold ring badly,i had to put it on a house cue to straighten it.

I did it once many years ago and smashed my index finger bad. Never did it again after that.
