Buddy is in the Hospital

For anybody who might be concerned. About four days ago Buddy kept falling asleep at Side Pockets. He was taken to the local hospital. I was told he had a small Brain Aneurysm pop. I guess you could say he had a stroke. I'm not a doctor. He was in serious condition but is doing better. I guess they also found a much larger more dangerous one that is still intact. I don't know his prognosis or when he is getting out etc. I haven't been around the the pool hall the last few weeks so i just heard from his cousin today. He is in Lourdes hospital in Paducah, Ky. He was staked to play in the 500 dollar entry bar box tournament in Metropolis this weekend, but obviously he won't be playing in it. That's all i know right now. I'll go visit him tomorrow if i can. John Crabb

Sorry to hear that,, man i wish him a quick and full recoverry. Best wishes Buddy..

John, if in fact that was a Pop, as you called it, it was a Subarachnoid Aneurism.

There is no such thing as a small Subarachnoid. They are all dangerous. When an artery breaks, the sack of fluid that your brain sits in, fills with blood. You get approx 10 to 15 seconds, and then you're gone.

Only 10 % make it so Buddy is very fortunate. It wasn't his time to go just yet.

Also very fortunate that they found another. Buddy will get either Clips or By Passes on the arteries. Pray that those arteries are not too deep so the possible side effects will be minimal to zero.

These days, some of the procedures, I believe, can be done from another Artery, just like putting a Stent in for your Heart. so hope they can do it for him. That will keep them from having to go in from the top.

The best part is that he got to the hospital. That alone will increase his chances 10 Fold.

We should all say a Prayer for Buddy tonight before we close our eyes.

Terry...Five years ago my 90 year old mother in law had a brain anurism. They did a phenomenal procedure where they put a wire in her groin, all the way up into her head, and coiled the wire around itself until it "filled up" the anurism. Then they heated the wire and it 'congealed' into a ball. She's never had one iota of trouble with it since, and is still going strong at 95.
I watched a dvd of how the procedure was done and it was astonishing!

Cecil is my "Buddy" for a lifetime in pool. We go back to Johnston City in the 60's. I talk to him like a Dutch Uncle about his weight but he doesn't want to hear it. I love Buddy Hall, one of my all time best friends in the pool world, always a smile on his face and a friendly greeting for everyone.

Buddy was not only gifted on the table but he has a knack for telling humorous stories about the rest of us. What has made him so great all these years is his ability to control the cue ball perfectly shot after shot. His control is up there with Mosconi and Lassiter. Plus he had the power of Mizerak to pull off the huge stroke when it was necessary, and the heart of a lion to win under extreme pressure. Buddy was THE MAN in American pool for nearly three decades!

I love him but I know his time is limited if he cannot lose some weight. He knows this too but seems unable to do anything about it. Maybe this is the wake up call he needs. I sure hope so.

@ BHR - you are correct. Time is of the Essence.

when Mom's burst (she'd been having massive headaches for weeks, but MRI's were new & insurance wasn't authorizing them yet), she lost conciousness. it's bleeding into the brain & the pressure that that builds, till contained. we had her moved to Baptist (Wake Forest) Hospital, to the best in the state. 1st surgery, was to clamp-off. it didn't work.... the brain had already reacted to the massive flooding & was swelling. they had to induce coma w/ life support, to calm her brain, hoping it would subside. the 2nd surgery, was to remove a portion of her brain (supposedly a part that no one uses), to free-up area & allow for the swelling. didn't work; brain damage. 6 days in ICU & $80K. 1993.

2 yrs later, a rugby friend of mine, had the same thing. medicine & MRIs had progressed. but he was 23. they clamped it & he is fine & living at the beach while owning a pool hall here in Greensboro.

Wow. That is great news. I hope he takes this as a wake up call. Not many come out of something like that and can or want to go to the poolroom. He's a very, very lucky man. Johnnyt

What did they do for him in the hospital? Too soon to be out and about after almost any kind of head surgery. Johnnyt
