Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

Don't worry, I can see the pattern here clearly already. Each time Zach is left alone, he loses your money in short time.

This Zach is a smart man. He is cutting you up, and taking free room and board all at the same time.

It never dawned on me until a few minutes ago.

I've known zach gor about five years and cutting geno up is not his style. Zach is a young kid who has more confidence than brains sometimes. He is a good kid. And he does havea lot of talent. But that can get you busted as well if you can't keep your ego in check.he was betting pretty cheap when I saw him on his own money, so atleast he wasnt out betting his bankroll. He just has to make better games.

You have to be careful that ego will get you in games you have no business in! Get someone pumping your head up and then you try to play over your head just to prove something. Generally gets you busted.

He is a great kid and worth the work.....

They don't come any better than this.

A young guy that loves pool and lives, eats and sleeps it.

Just needs to learn how to pace himself so he's ready, Freddy, all the time. this is the hardest thing to be on the road all the time.

So many times while i'm by myself i would play people that were right there not being ready. Giving lessons all the time it's hard to stay in dead punch.

Then the next day I get even but it's too late. now i didn't make any money.

All Zach have to learn to do is have his gun ready all the time. His top gAME IS WAY BETTER THAN HIS TIRED GAME. sOMETIMES BY ABOUT 2 BALLS.

This is what I need to teach him and we need to build up that body of his. A little muscle, sleep and good food is the answer. Then he can try to run himself ragged but the body has the reserves to get him through. And it will just get better from there.

This is all part of being a champion. I know what it takes ansd if this kid sticks with it and i think he will, there is no telling what can be accomplished here and I can share it with everyone.

I'm not guessing here, i know what needs to be done because I've been there. I've beaten just about everyone I played for about a 10 to 15 year period. I just wasn't playing on the big stage then and there was no internet. Those that played me know.

I was like a well oiled machine and a force that was tough to beat.

This is what i need to teach Zach. Once he gets there and feels the power it's all over. it;s such a fine line from being there and not being there.

Time will tell.

2 men a van and the road.........

I read a book Titled. talent is overrated. This book goes into great detail About how champions Become champions. The book suggest that it takes about 10 years Of real training And coaching. Is helps get the player is young And has a knowledgeable influence. I personally Have reached about the 4 year mark So 6 more years watch out

i agree with this, nice

I don't know if genuine worldbeaters can be built.

Whatever the component is that separates shortstops from pros, or pros from top pros...I think it's a psychological thing. Drive is probably the best word for it. And you'll probably see evidence of it at an early age.

You can love pool and you can care about pool, but you can't program someone to, say, practice breaking for 6 straight hours and be awake the entire time, or not leave the house before they run 100 in straight pool, or whatever. I think kind of obsessive quest for perfection has to do with someone's personality and how they grew up.

What you sound like you're doing is teaching him to handle pressure. But for some guys, that "middle of the field" level is all they'll ever achieve even if they figure out how to 100% control their nerves.

I had the high powered job making 100,000 to 150,000 a year. It had it's good points and i was married and had a dream of living happily ever after.

Once that dream was gone, and it happens, I just have to follow my own dream. I'm 60 years old and diabetic. On the last stretch of life. I can still go places and do things.

And the one thing I really understand is you can't take anything with you as far as I can see. My father died about 8 years ago and to my recollection I can't think of one thing that he kept.

I've been on the road now myself and have nothing to show for it but a whole lot of friends in so many places. To me this is something. A whole lot of something. And these friends I have shared something with will be able to teach and use this forever and that's a long time.

Just give me a cue stick and a little money and I can have more fun than a barrel full of monkeys. This is what i am sharing with Zach and just doing for myself.

In fact I don't really know of any pool player or teacher that has stayed on the road pretty much continually for 3 to 4 years.

I've been on the rich side of things and I've been on the broke side of the fence also.

Right now in my life I wouldn't trade places with no one.

I like what I do and I'm going to keep doing what I do until I can't do it anymore so your just going to have to put up with my stories on here for a while longer for sure.

I'm tough to bust and even tougher to break.

This is what I am trying to teach Zach and it sure is fun.

There's no blueprint to follow here except the blueprint of the road in my mind.

Just happy to be able to share this with anyone that wants to see.

2 men a van and the road..........

nicely put

In the book talent is overrated the conclusion as to what separates champions from the world class field is drive. In almost every case where a champion was studied the evidence was that they worked much harder and in way deeper ways than their colleagues.

Busy, busy, busy........

I've had no rest here at home. Good luck with trying to rest my back and heal up. It's feeling better but not because of rest.

Done about 9 Perfect aim lessons since being back in Eau Claire. Just about everyone that I talk to in person about it has set up a lesson.

It's getting easier to show players how bad they cut one way more than the other. Once they see this it's over. They want to know how to fix it. And everyone has this problem and this is the main problem that Perfect Aim fixes for everyone.

There have been so many misleading statements on the internet about what Perfect Aim is really all about and how it works.

Bottom line is it works and everyone needs to know it. Otherwise you miss allot of shots because the eyes force themselves to be wrong naturally.

Perfect Aim just prevents this from happening therefore you can envision the shot correctly.

If the shot looks good that's half the battle.

Got 2 more lessons tomorrow and then it's off to Faribault, MN to one of the best yearly tournys in Minnesota. This is like the US Open of MN.

8 ball one day and 9 ball the next. $75 entry each.Good Calcutta and good food.

Nice tables and well run by Richard A and Seco V.

After this it's back to business as usual. Traveling and teaching and building myself a champion.

Gonna take a few more days back in Eau Claire first though to finish up about 5 or 6 lessons.

Then it's 2 men a van and the road once again.......

I can add one thing about the kid, after meeting both him and Gene for just a brief moment. Geno is doing something very special for this kid. I don't think Zach fully understands that Geno is doing something very special for him, or more importantly that Zach has something going for himself, that is very special.

This kid is GOOD, and with the right approach can be great. When you talk to Zach, it doesn't seem like he understands, that he DOES have the goods. He CAN be a champ, but only if he can put the pieces together. (i.e. cut the energy drinks, get on the regular schedule, make the right games, etc.)

When you read this thread, you might think that there some kind of dramatic embellishment on Gene's part, about how the kid, and what they do. After seeing them in person, Gene's assessment is spot on. Grant it, I don't have the most experience in the world, but I have some different points of view, and from where I sit, if Zach can put it together and really buy into what Gene is selling him, LOOK OUT!!!

My prediction is they hit a tipping point. That will make or break Zach. He'll have a match up, or situation, where push will come to shove, and he will make a choice to succeed, or fail. From what I have been told, most great pool players have gone through it, and that was the turning point to greatness.

best,

Justin

Hi there Justin,

Our trip might have to be held back a little until my back heals up. I hurt it working on my mothers bathroom sink.

After the shoulder surgery 2 1/2 years ago and the motorhome incident about 2 years ago my back is not very stable. I had back surgery in 1999 and it is the same area that is screwed up L4 and L5.

I'm hoping it will heal up. I'm going to try and play in the Seco Varoni tournament this weekend in Faribault, Mn. This is one of the best tournys in the whole state in MN. 8 ball and 9 ball.

Then it's back to Wisconsin to help my son put up one of my old 9 foot gold crowns in his new house. Pretty nice pad.

Basement is huge and he's already got a 7 footer with plenty of room for the 9' footer.

Zach will just have to stay busy.

I certainly have. been doing 2 lessons a day for about the last week except for Christmas and New years Day.

I havn't played all week but maybe that's a good thing. Gave these old bones a rest.

So it's off to Faribault to see what the old man can do.

Just one man and a van and the road this weekend for sure........

ALL energy must be focused on the present.

In the book talent is overrated the conclusion as to what separates champions from the world class field is drive. In almost every case where a champion was studied the evidence was that they worked much harder and in way deeper ways than their colleagues.

At some point in a champions life they must be willing to do whatever it takes to be the best they can be. No more justifications or rationalizations, just the focused commitment to do whatever it takes each and every day.

Both eyes will be focused on the path with little concern about the future - ALL energy must be focused on the present every day to evolve.

I believe champions in any sport have periods they were obsessed with "unlocking" the system to success. This type of "drive" creates the stength needed to survive the inevitable series of tests needed to develop into a champion. 'The Game is the Teacher'

Your so right..........

You can try to point a player in the right direction and show them and show them until your blue in the face. But until they are ready to do what it takes and make some commitments it's almost impossible.

With a young guy like Zach i can see there has been little structure in his life as was mine when i was younger. I am trying to show him the structure and discipline it takes to perform at your top level. it becomes tough because he never wants to stop playing. He would play 25 hours a day if there were 25 hours and only quits when his opponent quits or he's ready to drop.

The talent and drive are there. The discipline is not. Or the knowledge to keep yourself in top form all the time.

Even if we are unsuccessful in getting him there soon the work that has been done will stick with Zach forever. I can see him teaching a young man the same lessons I am sharing with him now 25 years from now.

Imagine if this other young man would become the best player in the world.

You never know?

Hey Geno, was just wondering how Zach's $500 roll has "evolved". Excuse me if I missed its mention previously.

I hope it's up to $100k! :)

Best of rolls,

Matt

I talked to him yesterday.....

He told me he was $15.00 to the good.

I don't know if he meant $15.00 or $515.00 now that I think about it.

I hope he meant $515.00.....:wink::D

Zack's perspective

Hi Geno,
Love the thread, and hoping it all works out. I know Zack a little from Beloit and have seen him mature over the years. I know you have him in intensive training, but wondering if there is ever a break where he can sit on this thread for a few minutes and post his thoughts on wins and losses on the road. I'm sure you talk about the lessons learned, but maybe where he disagrees with you on things such as the energy drinks, whether he was feeling good where you felt he was feeling bad, etc.

Keep up the great work!

I like where you are going with it but if I am the coach I would say no absolutely not. Keep the kid away from AZB as long as possible so his head isn't filled with lots of conflicting advice, flames wars, insults, bark fests and the like.

I know what you mean JB. But maybe Geno could add some of the feedback and put it into the stories. ie, maybe Geno thought Zack was too tired to play, but there was a different distraction going on. Or Zack saw a weakness in his opponent that he thought he could take advantage of. Ï would say a good 90% of the thread has been from Geno's perspective, and it'd be nice to hear from the other half.

Posting on AZB for a young guy who isn't already involved with a forum like this and who has already been sliced and diced in the forums is not a good idea. Having Zack post on this forum would most likely be the worst thing he and Gene could do. Gene's developed a thick skin over the years and puts up with a lot of BS because he knows that those that give him hell are just trying to have their moment in the sun. A young guy would be more apt to give back some of what he is getting.

It's sad that az is a place we wouldn't recommend to other people. At least not without extensive disclaimers. Has this guy spent much time online already? If he's been on other forums before he may already have developed that thick skin.

it'd be neat to hear his perspective... Maybe he dictates to geno or is sat down in front of a new reply screen with no other posts to distract him. Broadcast only.

It is sad, but to the moderators' credit, some of the ad hominem attackers have been muzzled.

"Neat" and nice for us, but not so smart for Zack and Gene. Already Gene is shorting himself on action matches with his show all, tell all policy. Still, it makes it great for us, seeing the chronicles. It is one of my favorite threads to reveiw each day.
