Bummed - No Ustream for Me

Well, no matter what I do I can't get a good connection for the Action Challenge through U-Stream. :-(

My bandwidth absolutely rocks for surfing inside China. But connecting to US servers is like worse than dial-up (almost). I have tweaked out the settings and it doesn't help.

I am still gonna pay for the feed and hope for the best. I was really hoping that The Action Report guys were doing something better than U-Stream.

I say this because that's what I got out of the initial lead up to this event - that they had hooked up with or done something technical to improve the feed over what it was for the Ring Game. And maybe they have done something I don't know about.

Is there anyone else who plans on watching this from Asia and specifically from China? Have you had any luck or do you have any tips on how to get a better connection?

I hope this action challenge stream is better than the diamonds feed of action. Its like watching slow motion players! I have dsl and everything appears to be almost robotic. I couldn't handle the quality watching all day. My eyes would hurt someting awful.

According to the TAR website the PPV will be a different provider than Ustream. They say there will be info posted about this soon.

That's great - as of yesterday I was just going off of what was posted at their forum and trying to figure out how to make sure my connection is the best it can be.

EDIT: in case there was ANY doubt, I am an IDIOT.

I went back the TAR forum and read this:

Ustream is the service we will use for the free coverage. It is of a lower quality than PPV . If your gear will work with any Ustream broadcast it will work for ours. The PPV is with a different provider and is Windows Media Player based and not Flash like Ustream.

So hopefully the PPV stream will function better but I still think it's probably gonna suck for me as I don't seem to be able to get good speed hitting any server outside China. But like I said $20 for a good cause is well worth it!!!

the pre play will be on ustream for free! then the match goes to our pay site witch we think you will be very happy with! hope you enjoy it Mr.Barton!

No, I thought you were talking about the feed from the action at Diamonds. I was going to tell you not to worry because not many people in the States were able to see it either. I guess if you can't see Corey Vs SVB over there - or if the feed is bad, you'll probably just have to wait for the dvd's - which I believe will be a great deal... $20 bucks for the live feed + whetever they charge for the DVD's... its a bargain anyway you look at it.
 
I've been unhappy with ustream too. I think in general the quicktime mp4 streaming software blows (at least for windows). About 1 try in 20, I get something to show up when I switch from "motion JPG" mode to streaming mp4 mode. The other times I get errors. The errors might be due to too much demand but I think it's just some kind of crappy coding, because other streaming formats at least TRY to show you something, even if it's slow and choppy. I couldn't get the mp4 at all without a complete reinstall of the necessary plugins.

I'm glad they're going with something better for this.
I'm a little annoyed that I couldn't find a way to save the stream, which is usually possible on other sites.

Well, I haven't been happy with it but I can't seem to tweak out my settings to get a good feed so it's probably not on your end.

After doing two day's worth of research I have come to the conclusion that there are way too many factors present to eliminate them all and guarantee a good stream no matter what the "advertised" bandwidth of your connection is.

I notice that people in the USA also had problems with the stream while others did not.

I don't know if anyone offers a peer to peer service that you can do pay per view on but I love Sopcast and TVU for the World Championships and The Guiness Tour. The P2P software seems to do a pretty good job of giving me a good stream and I never need to worry about my settings.

It's a bummer because I think you will have a global audience for these events if you can figure out a way to help folks get the stream.

AudioVideoweb.com had zero information for end users. It's like this everytime someone tries to do webcasts. Only the IPT through SpiderWeb did a reasonable job and even that was spotty at best. That said, I have enjoyed the Derby City from BCN and the IPT both and felt that the money was worth it. Especially the IPT with access to the archived matches.

I canceled my IPT account in protest over the non-payment. But for what it's worth they truly showed how it should be. A monthly fee, for access to the live events and access to the taped matches.

I have said it before and I will say it again - Accustats can get me for $20 a month, BCN can get me for $20 a month, anyone can get me for $5-20 a month if they provide web-based access to pool that works.

It is ridiculous in my opinion to stick to the DVD model of distribution when there are functional alternatives out there. I sold all my Accustats tapes and DVDs and don't plan on buying more because I hate accumulating more stuff. But IF I could access the vids online whenever I feel like watching a match then Accustats could be making FAR MORE than I would ever spend.

So I hope that ALL of you who are producing pool content are taking this to heart.

Interesting- I caught a bit of news radio that was saying that China's connection speed infrastructure was far better (hi-speed) and cheaper per-user that our connections in US. The context was that this is an indicator that US is possibly positioned/ vulnerable to falling behind in the tech sector, as we have in manufacturing.

How would I know any different, AZB! Behold the POWAH!

As far as surfing inside China to servers in China the connection speed beats the USA at least in my experience. In China people watch streaming movies from dozens of servers - with no lag.

But when I go to sites outside of China, especially video streaming sites the connection is slow. Sometimes I hit servers in the USA where the websites come up fast and the download speeds for software are fast.

I pay $175 a year for the highest speed offered. Which is fast DSL, I don't know the exact speeds that were quoted when I signed up.

I will say this!!! The customer service here is BETTER than any US Company. If I have any problem with my internet service they send a tech right out to check everything. Within the hour.
 
I am relatively new to pool in comparison to some of you other posters. Can you guys/gals give us a link to the ustream site or some type of link to the game in China?

You're Sh** outta luck. The intercontinental backbone between asia and U.S. was damaged during an undersea earthquake later last year. Connecting to servers in north america is REALLY tough. My guess is there's nothing you can do.

I don't have any links to the Chinese pool scene - at least not on my computer - but my assistant can provide you with plenty - in Chinese though.

You know I think you're right. I was able to watch the last IPT event with no problems and YouTube and others were fast until the quake hit. After that it's been hell with video sites especially.

Hopefully in a few years we won't even have to think about this stuff. It will just work.

This feels like the telephone in 1910.
