It was sometime around 1992-93 I think, and Mark Kalungian from Pool Table Magic, called me and said I need to call Burton Spain right away. He gave me the number and said ask him about the "End Of Line" cues. Well I obviously did, and Burton said I have one left.....Do you want it. Burton told me he was making his last six cues and was going to mark them EOL 1-6. I believe that it ended up at 1-10. Anyway I told him he would have the money the next day, and I got EOL 4. Its never been chalked or out of the case since then, except for a few minutes to look at it every now and then
I think its beautifull....what do you think

Spain CUes

Hi Steve,

Great looking Spain EOL Cue, thanks for sharing the detailed pictures.

hey

Tommy and BBC, thanks for the nice comments. I was just downright lucky that he still had one unsold.

I have owned 3 Spain cues and several blanks that he made for me. I never saw a Spain that I did not like. Yours looks great and having the signature really makes it unique.

It looks like it was done using the stacked veneer method. I'm trying to wrap my head around how you could do a full splice like that. I wish I could do it:mad:

Thanks for sharing Steve that is one hell of a story and some fantasic information that you certainly don't here from any other source.

hey

Craig, thanks. It is fun hearing these kind of stories. I hope we can hear more of the same from other AZers

I remember back in the day.....

Steve,

Out of all the rare find cues you got. This is best one I like most. I remember back in the day EOL cue , I heard of it. But never saw one until now. BEAUTIFUL LOOKING CUE YOU GOT THERE.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Spain's end of line cues seem so precious to me. The man was a genius, aware of his demise, and he built a series of his finest cues in his last months. I held #5 once and all I could do was think about the man. What resolve to practice your art to the end. Thanks for sharing this cue Steve.

Seeing his cues always makes me wonder about the man behind as well... Look at the colours, the shapes and most importantly: the proportions, everything is sized, measured and calculated just perfectly.

I wonder what this man would be able to do with today's equipment... Wait: take a look at where Joel Hercek is right now.

Thank you so much for sharing, I cherish every occasion when I may see a Burton Spain cue.

Special

Steve

Great cue, thanks for sharing. I can never look at Burton's EOL sticks without trying to imagine how it must have felt for Mr. Spain to be making his last cues.

That's a keeper for sure.

Thanks again

These kind of responses, are exactly how I feel about that cue. I actually get goose bumps knowing it was one of his last and he knew it.

I did get to meet burton once. I went to a cue show in Houston i think it was 1992. I had spent an hour talking and joking around with Thomas Wayne, and finally bought a cue from him. I then started walking down the aisle and there was Burton yelling for me to come over. I walked over there and he had two cinder blocks on the floor, and he put a cue between them leaving about a foot of cue in the middle..suspended. Burton then says give me your hand and step up on this cue. Well by now I am sort of petrified about the whole ordeal and I am going no way, are you kidding. He grabs my hand and says cmon big guy get up here, and gives a little tug. So up I went........and the cue didnt budge as he knew it wouldnt. hahahaha
He then says try that with any other cue in this building. We talked for a few minutes and then I kept going, I wish I had stayed there all day and talked to him, and bought every cue he had for sale. But of course I didnt.

Stunning cue. Whilst its intrinsic value is certainly high, the sentimental value is higher. Historic cue, Steve.

hey

Si and Eric...thanks for the comments. This is definately one of my favorite cues

I know what you mean. If Burton had told me he was dying I would have had him build me dozens of blanks before he passed if he wanted to. But he never even mentioned to me he was sick. He just built some blanks for me and never said a word.

Steve this is a great thread, and some of the stories are prices less and will be lost if written down or saved in some manner. Steve, I wish you would contact the AzHousePro and see if this thread could become a Sticky thread. Then we could add information about Burton Spain to it and information like this that is almost impossible to come by can be saved for the viewing pleasure of others.
