Buying new set of balls

Good day all,
I've been out of the game for about 19 years or so....I haven't played with anything better than a bar stick and not on a table bigger than 8' since '89....but I'm back now.
No longer being a teenager I'm able to pretty much outfit myself with the best equipment on the market and I'm building my dream pool room. I've got Simonis 860 getting installed by Jack Shurtz next week and want to make sure I've got a great set of balls to put on it.
With that being said, Centennial balls were the goods last I knew about anything. That was the first set that came to mind. Here lately I've been hearing about Aramith Super Pro.
I'm about dead set on the Centennial's ....however, I don't want to be remiss in my decision since the times have changed considerably in the last 2 decades.
Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Super Aramith Pro balls and Brunswick Centennial balls are generally considered to be the finest balls made today. They are both made by the Saluc company in Belgium from the same phenolic resin. I believe they are also made to the same tolerances, with the difference being in the design of the numbers. (The Centennial balls have the well known "dart" design.) The other major difference is price. The Centennials cost considerably more, perhaps because the number design is more expensive to manufacture, perhaps because Brunswick is an expensive middleman.
 
First, I just had my table re-covered with Simonis 860 about 4 weeks ago. I am estatic with the look, feel, and play. You will not be disappointed one bit. My only regret was I got the green and wished I had gotten the Tournament Blue. Next time!


Atlarge has suggested the correct balls. I have these balls and very very happy with them. Pooldawg is the forum sponser so I believe I can state that I got my Aramith set from them and this value pack is perfect for the price. You try to buy these things separately it will cost you more and you will need the Aramith ball cleaner so why not get this value pack. :)

Centennial balls rule!

Centennials!

I own Centennials and have played with them for 20 years, so I'm a bit biased.

Centennials are the best & seem to win in every thread on here. They have the prettiest and easiest to sight numbers. There is nothing wrong with the highest quality Aramiths, IMO, the numbers just aren't as pretty.

Make sure that you buy a red circle and measles ball for practice as none of the pool rooms use the blue circle.

Such good info in a short amount of time....Thank you both.

The same wise man that told me about the Centennial's years ago also told me..."green's the only color cloth that should ever be on a pool table"..as a result I'm going with the "Simonis Green"...I've seen that all the major tournaments choose the blue but, as a cinematographer, I'm not sure that the blue choice of cloth wasn't made for television broadcast reasons.

AtLarge...thanks for the info...the dart design is definately a trait that makes them stand out to the discerning eye...the crowd I run with now will NEVER know the difference.

Based on your info and I can get the training ball with the set I'm going to probably go with the Aramith's. Besides the fact, I'm a huge Rempe fan and the training ball will help me coach my wife and daughter on cue ball control.

I still welcome any advise, feedback or stories on this.

Looks like we were both writing responses at the same time...I'm again torn.

From the sounds of it I really can't go wrong with either choice. Now I've suddenly flipped back to the Centennials because that's what was ingrained in me years ago.

Maybe I'll find a happy medium and get the Centennials and the Rempe training ball.

I have the Super Aramith Pro TV Pro-Cup set and I love them. I've always been a fan of the change in a few of the colors, along with the measles cue ball. I wouldn't trade them for any other set.
 
I did the same thing after returning to the game (Centennial balls and green cloth) I had never even heard of Aramith until later.

I now have 860HR blue it plays great I was die hard green cloth but the blue does show up so much better.

If you compete you might want what the venue you visit use everything here is not very good green cloth and it takes me a little bit to make the switch.

I prefer the Centennials but if you're not used to the big numbers you might want Aramith I think they look very different compared to Centennials.

I recently bought the Super Aramith Pro Cup Value Pack and so far I'm pretty happy with it.

My understanding is they're both exactly the same. They are made at the same factory out of the same materials with the same tolerances the only question is do you want to play extra for the looks of the centenials. I love the looks of the centenials.
 
I just got 2 new sets of Centenials off ebay for about 100 each.
Haven't received them yet, but the seller had 100% positive and about 350 feedbacks.
 
Centennials and Aramiths are the best but some more info for you. While the Aramith Super Pros are great there is also the more expensive Aramith Tournament Set which has the numbers outline in black like the Centennials only without the "points". They are a little harder to locate in america and cost basically the same or more than the Centinnials.

Don't forget to buy the round ones! The square ones don't roll so good. :rolleyes:
 
I play with Centenniels on Simonis 860 (green of course) on my table and what a beautiful combination. I had some friends over yesterday and they were amazed at how well it played. Neither of them could believe the cloth was 5 yrs old and the balls were 20 yrs old.

I had Centennials until I ruined them in a dishwasher, and then I bought Super Aramith Pro. Other than appearance, I haven't noticed any difference between them.

I've played once with the TV set and the different colors only confused me. Unless you plan on appearing on TV and you want to get used to them, I recommend the traditional colors.
 
I've been playing seriously since the early '70s and my experience is that the Centennials are far superior. I have Aramith Super Pro balls for my home table and they do not hold up the same, at least for me. I played almost daily in a commecial room for over twenty years and never saw a Centennial replaced, scratched, cracked or anything else. Can't say the same for the Arimiths.
 
When I set up my home room last year, I had to make the same decision. In the end I went with the centennials as I preferred the style of them and they just seem to go with the old Gold Crown I was putting in there. Combined with the green 860 cloth it is a classic look.
