Buying Table Soon: How Good Are the Used Gold Crowns?

Seems to be a ton of pool halls selling there used Gold Crown 4s. Also a bunch of people refurbishing them. There's a black gold crown 4, that a guy bought 2 years ago of a pool hall, and is selling for 2k, says good condition, do it?

Theres also a great escape near us and has brand new brunswick tables, is there really a difference between a 4k brunswick table and the gold crown 4, besides the gold crown being able to take more abuse?

I'm a little more than a recreational player, and would like something nice. Say budget is between 2k-4k. Really need help on purchasing a table for home guys. thanks in advance.

Let me start by saying I'm no expert or mechanic regarding tables but will give you my opinion..

I just bought a new brunswick within the last year for 2400. Plays good, we went that route because we only have room for a 7' and wanted something to look nice as well.

If I had the room and hopefully eventually will, I would get the GC or a diamond 9'. My table is nice, but from the factory, not quite tight enough, thats my biggest complaint. So if I was you, I would get the GC, as long as its like described in your explanation

Definately a good used Gold Crown (any but the GC3) or a used Diamond would be your best choice. I would rank the Diamond slightly above but there are more bargains on used Gold Crowns now.

Diamond Bias opinion!

I have a 7' pro am diamond. Having said that and having played on 9' diamonds and 9' GC's, either are going to serve your purpose but I would base it on what you are trying to accomplish.

Are you a tournament player/recreational player that will play on local GC's? Get a used GC(or new) depending on the deal you can get.

Are you the more than recreational player that likes to venture to larger tournaments where they might have Diamond tables? Get a Diamond, as they will just make you play better and (IMO) play tighter.

Or are you just wanting a table at home to keep you instroke and maybe practice on? Get either one that you can find a good deal on as both are excellent tables.

In the price range your talking about, you can find great deals on used Diamonds and definatly find steals on GC's.

Excellent advice all of you, but can u really trust a used gc4 that's been at a pool hall? will a new felt and a pro installer make this table great?

I would say "ask RealKingCobra about what he can do to/for a table!" He frequents this forum often and does wonders for tables. He deals with Diamond tables mostly but have seen him post his work on GC's as well.

Its a fine table, and having been in the pool hall wont hurt it at all. The Key will be in who sets it up, and how good of a job they do.

A top of the line brand new table will play like crap if set up poorly, so make sure your mechanic knows what he is doing.

One thing I will throw out there, since you stated you are little more than a recreational player, dont let anyone talk you into getting the pockets shimmed too tight. It sounds like it will be a home table for use by family and friends? If so, you want everyone to be able to enjoy it. JMHO

Thanks! Would anyone else buy a gc4 thats been used at a pool hall for 2 years? price is 2k.

Thoughts?

i have 2 9 foot medalist tables they were both from a pool hall ball return systems in both, the pockets are cut tighter, plus they are quad shimmed, any ways i had both tables redone and they play better than any other tables ive ever played on , ive played on diamonds gold crowns...etc,, my point is if you find a good table guy he can make the gold crown play great where are you located i have a brunswick home model forsale

Gold crowns are used in pool halls as much as they are for a reason, they are built like tanks compared to most tables. A gold crown can take ALOT more then 2 years in a pool hall and come out just fine, they are built to take the worst a pool hall atmoshpere can throw at them.

I bought one from a pool hall G4 with the matching brunswick light for $2500. Put new simonis on it and it plays great. There is nothing wrong with a gc3 except that over the years someone probably butchered the pocket angle (rubber) and it spits balls out.

For 2k you will be very hard pressed to find a better playing table. The GC is built for pool hall use so 2 years on one should not be an issue. The main thing is to get the right person to set it up for you. Any table if set up by a hack will play..well like it has been set up by a hack.

Gc3

What's wrong with the GC3?
A friend bought 10 of them.The rubber didn't last 3 years.
I heard they were made in Brazil.Gc2's play a little mushy also.Play a lot on gc4's,they play great.Gc1's play good also.
Heed the advice in this thread about installation.Use only a respected
installer.Don't let a backyard mechanic work on your Porche.

Excellent advice as always Woody.

question

Really two questions 1 Can you get a 9ft diamond set up in this price range? 2 Real kingcobra has a post about the gc's frame needing to be
beefed up,maybe this needs to be addressed. Just my 2 cents,Jack

Buy the GC4 and have a really good, professional mechanic set it up. Don't let some hack do the install. The key is in the set-up. The fact that it has been in the pool room for the last 2 years should not affect your decision negatively, especially if the room has a history of pretty good table maintenance.

No problem

Excellent advice all of you, but can u really trust a used gc4 that's been at a pool hall? will a new felt and a pro installer make this table great?

I just got a GV IV that had been in a room for 4 years.
Great table, you won't regret it!
