they used to be frequent in NC, but got shut down.
NYC been hit and miss..

any in Cali? FL ? TX?

how come the big tournaments dont do them?

I know that at a VNEA format (i.e. not sanctioned I don't think) tournament up in Wyoming last weekend, they had a calcutta. I don't think they do them here in Colorado. At the couple of Valley tournaments I've been to here, they do a "side pot" instead, where folks who make it to the final board can buy in for a fixed amount if they choose, and then that pot is paid out to the folks who bought in. Gets around the gambling-law aspect of calcuttas, I guess.

Edit: I also recall a calcutta being run in Georgia at a small local tournament I played in about a year ago when I was back there.

We do them in Indiana. But then we are always 10 years behind everyone else anyway. :D

They did a calcutta at the last Reno Open. I was suprised how little money was bid. If I remember right the highest bid was under $400.

I've Lost Money In Almost EVERY State

They still do calcuttas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

( BUT, that doesn't mean that they're legal )

We do 'player auctions' here in WA state. One interesting way that was done in Longview at Cadillac Island Casino last weekend was a blind draw. Everyone that wanted to get into the Calcutta paid a flat $20.

Then the player's names were drawn randomly and assigned in order to the people on the list, one at a time. After the round was completed, your 2nd horse's name was drawn and so on down the list. My 2 horses were out in 3. :o

Calcuttas

They are done all the time in the Midwest here, just not at state tournaments. I heard at the Rugby, ND in December, there were a few guys that went for over $500 each.

Uhh.... I have been to many tournaments in NC and most had calcuttas. I won't say where but they are still held regularly. Maybe they were cracking down harder in the area you were in.

I am not sure but isn't NC lottery-free? I would think that any state that had a lottery would have a harder time prosecuting infractions concerning a calcutta based on the laws that are in place regarding legal gambling.

> Here in my area, that being Tennessee,Ky,Mo,and Ark,it's pretty hard to find anything more than a 5 dollar entry fee tournament that doesn't have them. I've even seen a 5 dollar entry with one,but the pot wasn't very big,I went in the blind for 20 bucks. I've seen some where the calcutta was 15k or more. Tommy D.

They had one in Union, Missouri monday night, the last monday of every month. this month drew over $1300 for calcutta and the tournament is only $5--race to 1!! crazy shit. Usually some of the players from St. Louis make their way down here. ppl that have been here in the past.....Joe Woolford, Jake Embry, Dustin Dunham, Jerry Terbrock, Rich Cunningham, Spitball Charlie Darling, and more

In Michigan its legal to have a calcutta, in a pool tournament as long as the place doesnt sell any type of alcohol. Not sure why, but thats how it is, some places still hold a "players meeting" as they call it, but thats about it.

Michigan is the only place that I have heard of that has a law, like this.

We still do them all the time in Ohio, i just made $150 off of one of my horses last friday at a tournament, giddy-up!!!!! lol
