Sigel sightings have suddenly started to rival Elvis sightings. :)

I spotted him at a Mcdonalds in Michigan just outside Detroit. He was sitting with Elvis eating tater tots and gravy. Sam

Ewa Mataya Lawrence is also listed as an uncredited tech. advisor. Mike S. is listed as same in that list.

better late than never...

this is what happens when you're bored at 2:22 AM and can't sleep. There is a scene that does have Joey Gold.

That's also my little scene

Mark Jarvis, a good player from Indy has a very small part. Vincent shows the Balabushka to him in the poolhall right before they hit the road.

I am in that scene also, Vincent shows Mark and I the cue. I am in a leather jacket to the left of Mark. I was also in many more scenes that were cut. If you look carefully you can see my arm, my shoes, my shoulder, etc. I did show Cruise how to break the balls. If you notice Newman breaks the balls with his hand on the end rail. The same way no good player on earth breaks. Cruise was breaking the same way and I butted in and stopped him. He said that that was how Newman showed him how to break. I quickly replied that Newman couldn't play dead. He laughed and did it my way --- but never told Newman. Incidentally, Cruise never had a cue in his hand in his life and did all his own shooting. In one continuous scene at Agins pool hall on the South Side, he actually runs the rack out (while twirling the cue). Mike Seigel set up all stop shots but he still did great for a guy that had been playing for only 3 months. Cruise was a very nice guy, and at that time I didn't know he was gay. Paul Newman was unapproachable. Not that he was unfriendly. When you are that much of a superstar, no one goes near you when you are on the set. Cruise is probably like that now. Mike Seigel spent the whole time they were shooting in Chicago by my apartment, me feeding him, and getting him high. When I see Mike now, all he wants to do is sell me a cue.

The tournament scene at the end of COM was shot at Navy Pier in Chicago as were most of the scenes. There are alot of Chicago players that get a cameo. Mark Jarvis, Piggy Banks, I believe Larry Schwartz and others that I can't think of right now.

Sarah

That is correct! How did you know that Sarah?

Just watched Color of Money on cable for the nth time and I gotta know, how many pro pool players made cameo apperances in the movie? I know Mizerak was there, and also a few others, but can anyone name all of them? Did anyone appear in Pool Hall Junkies?

The Color Of Money

A little background.

Martin Scorcese and Paul Newman bought the rights to Walter Tevis' book.
Newman didn't like the story so he brought in Richard Price to write an entire new script.

Scorcese and Price came to the Caesars Palace Billiard Classic in 1984 and stayed for several days watching the tournament and making notes.
Later that year Scorcese brought a very young Tom Cruise to Norfolk for the U.S. Open. They stayed for a few days watching the tournament. I sat in the stands with Cruise and explained things to him while he watched the matches. He impressed me as very bright and inquisitive.

They wanted badly to get into the backroom, which was where the action was. I talked to Barry and got them in. Scorcese and Cruise stood against a wall for hours and watched Keith gamble with Danny Medina. Scorcese wanted Keith for the movie and began calling me in L.A. a few weeks later trying to get hold of Keith. My phone number was his only contact.

Keith wasn't to keen on flying to Chicago to audition. He told me they had to pay his airfare and put him up in a hotel, which Scorcese agreed to. They then sent me a copy of the script with Keith's part highlighted. Keith and I read his six lines and they sounded phony. I asked Keith how he would say this line and he told me, so I wrote Keith's own words in the margin. We did that on all his lines and I sent the script back to Scorcese's office.

They used ALL the lines we had rewritten and expanded Keith's part, giving him more lines. Keith stayed for the rest of the filming and became very friendly with the whole crew. He was paid well, unfortunately making a rather large donation to Efren playing One Pocket at the Classic Cup, which was held the week after the shooting wrapped.

A few other tidbits of info.

Prior to the actual filming, Cruise was coached in New York for several weeks by Herb Lehmann, a fine 14.1 player. He rarely gets credit for his role in making Cruise look so polished in the movie.

All the casino scenes were shot at Resorts in Atlantic City while the Last Call For Nine Ball tournament was going on. Newman came in a couple of times to watch Sigel play. The first time he came up on the podium (with two beefy security guards) and sat next to me while I was announcing the matches.

After I finished the announcements, I looked to my right, into the crystal blue eyes of Paul Newman. He was a handsome man. He sat quietly studying Sigel who was playing right below us. He maybe asked one or two questions before he got a call to report to the set, and just like that he was gone.

The premiere was held in New York and Los Angeles on successive weekends. I was hired by Scorcese to entertain the celebrities at Chasen's restaurant after the premiere. I brought in Keith, Kim Davenport and Robin Bell to play pool with all the celebs on two tables set up in Chasens restaurant by Murray Pool Tables. Tom Cruise walked right by the tables but declined to play, but a who's who of celebs hung out and played pool with Keith, Kim and Robin.

The two tables were the ones used in the final scenes of the movie and had a plaque set in the rails stating this fact. There was a silent auction that night on the tables and I acquired one of them and put it in my home. After the movie became such a huge hit in Japan, I was contacted by someone representing the Los Angeles Clubs in Tokyo. They wanted my table to put on display in their number one club. I sold it to them for an ungodly amount of money (and bought a new Gold Crown).

When I went to Japan for the International 9-Ball Championship in 1989, I was given an honorary membership into the Los Angeles Clubs.

Oh, one other thing. Time magazine introduced the much heralded movie with a cover photo of Newman and Cruise. Two editions were printed. On the East coast edition Newman was shown above Cruise and on the West coast edition they were reversed. If you had both copies today, they would be quite valuable. Naturally, I have only the West coast edition.

Great post.

It's a shame Herb Lehmann didn't get credit for his efforts, he's a nice guy and also a great table mechanic.

I enjoyed your post Jay!

Just wondering exactly when this took place. This couldn't have been long after Efren first arrived. I heard somewhere that Efren didn't play one pocket until he arrived here in the states. At the time of his match with Keith, was he still under the name Cesar Morales? Sorry to get a bit off subject.

My feelings are hurt. I was at that premierre but didn't get invited to anything afterwards. I contributed quite a bit to the whole scheme of things, including meeting with Cruise and Price more than once.

They also announce Louie's name as the Incomparable St Louie Louie in the end when the tournament is down to four players, right before they break the balls on the first rack. Louie told me that he spent a lot of time entertaining the crew, etc. & besides the pool they loved how he could recite & act out scenes from Scarface.

I think I remember Willie Munson told me once that he was there during the entire filming to assist but not sure if he had a visual in the movie.

Pool players in COM
