Meaning just what the question ask. If you do not feel good in a pool hall or about the tables or whatever can you play good pool in that room? Thanks for your input.

I say yes and no. Yes you can play well for a few days or a week, and no because if you don't like the room you just won't wanna play. You'll walk in a just sigh, bang balls around, hang out, but you won't play good pool. I'm there now. -_-

Yes and no.

If I don't like the room because it's dirty or because the patrons are very loud, I have a hard time getting past it and playing well.

If I don't like the room because of poor equipment, unfamiliar playing conditions, loud music, unaccomodating staff or poor service, I can usually get past it and play well.

Just no.

If the tables are not playing right, I won't play my best game.
If the environment (crowd behavior, how the room looks etc.) is not appealing to me, I won't play my best game.

well, No and Yes !

Hi Lock,

I'm no roadie , and certainly not a pro BUT,.......

no, - there is a table 1 place I go that is filthy !!! leaves a mark on your bridge hand,.... its that bad! Polyester balls, the whole thing. I play there every so-often B/C it is humbling after playing super aramiths and the best Simonas felt.

no- 1 Pool hall I sometimes go to treats their felt with something to keep the spills from staining. Thing is it makes the talbes 200 % faster than they should be. The CB just slides everywhere! It's great for straight shooting, murder for position play.

yes - another has some really nice ,fast diamonds !:smile:

yes - there is someone there that I want to play

Hope all is well !

If I'm playing with friends, no. Instead of bearing down a little, I will just hit balls and try to have casual fun... though I almost feel offended when I see clear evidence the room owner just doesn't care.

If I have to shoot in a crappy room for league (as I did tonight) then I will still bear down and play as well as I can given the conditions.

No..I cannot play quality pool in a hall I don't like playing in.

Of course, I cannot play quality pool in a hall I do like playing in either.

Yes, absolutely.

Quality of tables, bartenders, noise, terrible rest rooms...etc...none of this should affect your game too much, or at least not more than other players. Granted, good conditions can help greatly and increase your enjoyment. Poor table may limit what's possible to execute. Of course one should choose room with as good conditions as possible, that goes without saying.

For e.g. if you're in a tournament and things are not going well...you can't blame the equipment, loud rail birds, rude waiter...etc. Just the fact that you are still in competition means you have accepted tournament conditions just like other players. Those are just poor excuses for substandard play. It took me years to realize that.

Yes. There is a nice poolroom that I used to be an extremely loyal customer to but the owner is the biggest, and legendary, A-hole imaginable. I still played good in that place but it drove me crazy going in there and spending money in a place where the owner could treat people so badly. A quick example, a 60 year old customer spends $2 on a bottle of water and adds Mio to it. The owner goes ballistic, mother-fs the guy, calls him a cheap ________ and runs him out. That is just a tiny example. Aside from that, I did play good there. I think we can all play good just about anywhere if we really want to play. Living on a reservation out west I grew to enjoy playing on really rough equipment and still won a lot of tournaments where there were different size tables, balls, cueballs, heavy rolling tables, etc. I guess it is all about whether a person really wants to play and tune out the pieces that either aren't important or those that can limit your enjoyment.

Like most answers, yes and no

The place I usually go to is a billiards place with only a few pool tables. The people that play carom (including the very nice owner) are more regulars than new people so whenever I play there it is a comfortable environment. Very nice verhoevens and the owner, being a good player himself, cleans it often. When playing pocket, the people are more random, so sometimes it is a little uncomfortable, especially if you see them staring intently at your game and you don't know. It is even creepier when you did not know they were watching and then they comment. But overall, I think since I have had so many good experiences in billiards/pool halls that I have been to, I can't really say anything in the setting has ever disturbed me too much from having fun.

However, that is only at the halls... Playing at someone's house is a whole different story.

Worst was at a small party, and I discover there's a pool table, fabulous. They lend you their crooked cue, the balls feel like plastic. Chip crumbs and misc. on the table, can't draw your cue back because table is too close to the wall, random rules, chalk is basically a hollow cylinder. Okay maybe that's stretching it a little, but this is when they're sober, too.

If the tables are good then I will be just fine, I go to the poolroom to practice/play and some socialization. I am fine not speaking to anyone and just doing my thing so noise, people and whatever else going on does not really affect me too much and if its real bad then just look at it as a challenge. Most people go to poolrooms and bars to have fun and are clueless about serious pool like us diehards so when they have no etiquette I do not care much about it, why should they, they are there once in a blue moon usually, regulars figure it out.

No

My question is why would you go to a place you do not like in the first place? I understand certain circumstances (only pool hall in 100 miles or the like) but to me life is too short to be miserable doing what most of us consider our hobby and get away.

Maybe I am spoiled since I have 4 rooms within 15 miles all with Diamonds. I guess it does not hurt that the plant where they build the things is less than 10 miles from me.

Yes and no

I have to say I play my best at home. After I've been at a Pool Hall once I'm feeling pretty good. A friend of ours is an Amazing shot, simply stellar. I haven't seen a pool hall affect his game at any time in any way. We like some here better than others but that's only because drinks are cheap or service nice or it's a smoking bar. Nothing to do with our personal games.

I can't play good pool to begin with...

One thing that does really bug me though is my local pool hall when a little full gets unbearably hot inside. other than this, as long as i stay away from the Crown Royal I seem to do ok.

If one can't, I would suggest that one does not join a league or leave your own hall.

Or... better yet, play all the most uncomfortable places one can find until it just doesn't matter any more.

My 2 cents.
Rick
