Car rental tricks (sorry NPR) just urgent

Well after a whole bunch of trying differnt start dates, start locations, pick up point, drop off points. It seems that we are going to have to pick up in Salt Lak City and then insteadof dropping in L.A drive back to Salt Lake about 12 or so hours and drop it back off in the same place we started. Obviously it costs extra days rental. gas at god knows what price and a hotel. However it is still alot less expensive that the alternitive and looks like around $1,200 base price, not including 2nd driver, or the trip back to SLC. Ah well. Please come out and support what we do. Thanksagain to all foryou help and advice, it has been appreciated. You guys are great.

Have you looked into a delivery service that needs cars to be delivered to a area? Besides driving free you may get paid.

I hate to ask this but doe anyone know of any tricks to get a better deal on car rentals? Going on the road for 25 days and would end up dropping the car in a differnt spot than the pick up. They are really getting us on this and for 25 days we are looking at about $3,500 plus another $11 a day for a second driver to be added.
Been on expiedia, Priceline etc. Any info would be appreciated, oh we need a mini van and can leave from Salt Lake City or Phoenix and maybe even L.A. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. Thanks in advance for any help. Feel free to email if you prefer at cantrillmark@yahoo.com

Mark,

I sent you a PM.

Oh, also, one 'trick' that helped us is that the 30 day (monthly) rate ended up being cheaper than renting just for 2-3 weeks. Not sure if that's an option for you. Our trip took 15 days, but we had to leave the car parked in someone's driveway until we could return it and get the better rate.

Enterprise shows a minivan rental in Phoenix AZ returning to LAX for 25 days at $1105.16. I used the sample dates May 1 returning on May 26th.

Just a sidenote - and you may know this already...

Check with your auto insurance, your policy may cover insurance. Rental car companies gouge the snot of you on insurance. Am Ex may also provide coverage if you use it to pay for the rental.

every little bit helps

A CostCo AmEx card gives you back 3-5% percent from AmEX on all purchased gas at the end of the year. If you use it to buy costco gas with an executive membership, you get an additional percent back from costco, too.

Chase circulates their incentives, too- I bet you can find something with whatever you have. Problem is finding cheap places that take credit cards.

As another one said above, I called my insurance company before a major road trip, and they said not to bother with the rental coverage- they'd cover anything I drove.

When you research well and nickle and dime, it really, really adds up.
