Carolina Women's Billiard Classic

Looks like Team Fury is starting strong. Kelly Fisher won her opening match 9-1 over Susan Williams, and newcomer Val Finnie, also sponsored by Fury, knocked off HOFer Ewa Lawrence 9-5. Way to go ladies!!!

More updates:

XiaoTing Pan was down 5 to 4 and came back to win the match 9 to 6. It was not hill hill.

Laura Smith plays a simply yet solid game, since her game is not flashy, a lot of players underestimated her. Laura Smith is indeed a good solid player.

Tough lost for Tina, I wish her all the best on the B side.

Yes, Steve, the Fury team is always strong. Kelly Fisher always has a great chance of winning a WPBA event.

I also heard that Alice Rim had a big opportunity to pull the score to 8 a piece playing against Karen Corr but she unforunately scratched. Very tough loss for Alice. Wish Alice all the best on the B side.

UGH, sorry Alice! I've met quite a few female players this year. I hope I'm not forgetting someone else. :confused:

I met Alice Rim the same night I met Melissa. Alice is one cool chick! Her 1st match is against Karen Corr... Good luck Alice!
 
Just gor more updates:

Jennifer Chen won her match. She will be playing Kelly Fisher next.

Xiaoting Pan beat Angel Paglia. It was a close match. Ms. Pan will play Allison Fisher next.

Hsin Huang lost to Vivian V.

Kelly and Val won their first two matches. Anna Kostanian (18 years old, short of stature but BIG GAME) beat Gerda 9:2 I think. Val beat Ewa Laurance 9:5 in her first round match. I am not seeing a lot of the action since I am on the backside of the bleachers. Kim Shaw won her matches and is looking very sharp. Banked the 9 in on the hill in her last match.

One thing that I find fascinating is the amount of "vixen" posters the girls have now. I mean posters of them in seductive and provocative poses. If I were a 14 year old boy I would love to have my room plastered in these. Jeanette was looking extra hot when she came out in a stylin' black dress. Sure made a nice contrast to the slacks. I am usually not very sexist, but if the girls can have posters that make them seductive then let's see some sexier outfits :-))

The cloth is dark green, forest green I think. Several of the players have complained that it is difficult to see the dark balls.

The event itself is nicely done. The folks in Rocky Mount really do a nice job of welcoming the players and the tournament. The sheriff's department is doing security, there are several local businesses that have chipped in. All of the players got small suitcases embroidered with their name and the event logo filled with goodies from the local businesses.

So far having a good time. Richard, if you're here come and introduce yourself. I am on the right side behind the bleachers.

I see the Allison v Pan match, "The Master v The New Kid on the Block" will take place at 9pm tomorrow night.

I guess there will be a good crowd following that match. I am not aware of them ever playing each other before.

But I think Pan played and beat Karen Corr for 3rd place in the last World Championships. I can't find a record of that match on the net though. [edit] Correction, there was no playoff, they shared 3rd place. So I don't think Pan has played either Allison or Karen before.

Hi John,

Good to hear the Fury Girls have hit the ground running ! If there is any chance of posting the girls' results I would appreciate it. The update of the brackets seems to be quite slow so far. Please pass on my best wishes to the girls and ask Kelly if her phone has broken ! LOL

I was late in going to the site to see the results.I could not believe what I saw. Tracy Hines lost to gerri Engh and Ga young kim lost to my rowdy friend Susan Mellow ( ``Madhatter`).These are biggest upsets.
 
Wow!!!!! What a Thursday it was in the inaugural WPBA event of 2006.

To my knowledge, since the 64 player field format was adoped four years ago, the seeded players have never had a tougher day than this one.

Just 8 of the 16 seeded players managed to win their first two, as follows:

Survivors: A Fisher, Corr, Webb, Fisher, Thornfeldt, Villareal, Lee, Chen
Beaten: Kim, Hofstatter, Nelson, Kelly, Barretta, Herndon, Ellerby, Laurance

Not sure what to make of this, but I suspect part of the story is that the WPBA talent pool has grown deeper. This tour is getting very strong, and the ladies are playing better and better. More power to all the ladies who are working very hard at their games.

I look for the eight seeded players that endured a loss on Thursday to bounce back today, but who knows, perhaps a couple of cinderella stories will be written today.

If Pan beats Allison, and I'm betting against, it will turn this tournament completely upside down.

Nice to see Jeanette Lee winning her first two. It would be a really nice story if Jeanette had a strong finish in her first WPBA event since her surgery last August.

Thanks for the insightful summary sjm.

I wouldn't back Pan at evens, but I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if she beats Allison. She has a pretty amazing winning record in big events against players the like of Kim Ga Young and Liu Xin Mei.

Certainly I feel Allison has proved herself to be something special though!

Jennifer Chen vs Kelly Fisher sounds like a good one, but in this format, even the winner is far from guaranteed a TV appearance.
 
For the Texas fans out there, Heather Pulford Lloyd won her 2nd match against Helene Caukin 9-4. This is Heather's first WPBA event in many years. :)

While I was talking to her, she mentioned that Ga Young Kim lost to Debbie Schojdt (sp?).
