challenge of champions...

Sad part is, they aren't the only ones that have done it in big tournaments. It still goes on today.:frown:

Yes, but the absence of legalized sports betting on pool in America helps the cause to some extent. Imagine if these guys hadn't blown it completely for making pool a bettable sport? Then our sport might be as fixed as professional wrestling, and maybe, just maybe, as visible.

That's a sad last statement. Makes my head spin. That's just messed up Stu, stop making me think!

I'm just waiting for Dr Oz to give us all a group enema, while the witch doctor performs an exorcism, and Mahatma Gandhi waves his magic wand as Pinky clicks her ruby red slippers. Peace and harmony.

Have watched this video dozens of times and it still makes me sick. I remember when it happened in 1991 and it remains a serious blemish on our sport's history which has been analyzed many times on this forum. In one thread on this incident, I posted:
They did the same thing at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles IL. around the same time period or the year after. The dump was obviously on there also.

IMO it went on bigtime at some of the Seminole tournaments and MC points (purse $ won) were involved in some of it. Where is that Seminole tour now? Johnnyt

we who know

just wondering what you all think was the worst giveaway shot of Buddy's?

Was it the missed 8 ball in the next to last game, or the missed simple 8/9
combo on the last game?

I also found it interesting that one of the posters on the onepocket thread on this subject also suspected the Hong Kong
Color of Money match might have been a dump too, because Earl lost when he was 17 games ahead.....I never thought that about that match; I also seem to recall somebody said it wasn't really $100,000 winner take all.....but that it was really $75K/$25K split....

Earl has stood up and has been against this for years...For the record it was $100k winner take all period! If you do not know the facts please do not spread rumors or repeat hearsay!

I never thought Earl dumped any match, but may I ask how you have the FACTS? Johnnyt

I was watching that same event with my best road player at the time. We both were screaming at the television the entire last track. When the match was over my buddy jumped up slam down his drink and said the most blatant dump I have ever seen in my life.

Regarding the "dump" shots watch the clippeo I made. I think the most telling shots are the ones where he tries to scratch and get behind balls. This is the master of position play, remember.:frown: I guess the clock system really works...

Whatever else can be said about Earl, at least he is not a match fixing, dumping scumbag. He is not given enough credit for this. They must have tried to pressure him, and he stood up to them. I respect him for that. I understand his bitterness regarding so called professional billiards. I would have been depressed and pissed off as well if I had achieved Earls level of play and then see people drag the sport through the mud.

Sadly, it happens more often than most realize!

Earl's integrity is rightly celebrated. What happened here would have been beneath his dignity and you could never convince me that the Hong Kong match was a dump.

Incidentally, it has been taken note of on this forum and onepocket.org that Allen Hopkins, who played in the 1991 COC event, was the only participant who was not in on the fix.

The Dump.....

Here's what I don't understand. How can any avid pool player who loves this game still speak so highly of Buddy and others after this happened? Especially the way it happened. I've seen much better executed dumps from players that didnt play anywhere near their speed. I dont care how good they may have played its obvious what KIND of people they truly are when you witness this disgrace of the game for monetary gain. What makes it even worse is that not knowing how many we're involved there's no way to know how much cash was actually involved. And even worse, the majority of these so called legends of the game are broke! I see on this very site where there are so called fund raisers, auctions, special events, and even some asking for donations to help support these so called legends. So does what they have done for the game supposedly outweigh these disgraceful actions. I think not......I've always said that I'd love to play in a $5 ring game with some of the greatest but on second thought I wouldn't want to get dumped. We all know as pool players and especially gamblers that this takes place at all levels of the game but it certainly can't make us proud of such actions while playing the game we love. :(
