Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant has my respect...and this is why.

On November 9, 2008, I watched as Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant faced the hottest player in the world at the moment...the current US Open Champion, Mika Immonen. The event was the 2008 IPT ProAm where sixteen teams of six amateurs (each with an assigned Pro) competed for a winner-take-all prize of $50,000.

Charlie & Mika fought their way to the finals to compete for the $50,000 in a short, race-to-3 match of 8-ball. Both players knew they could not make a single mistake or their team's dream of winning $50,000 would be dashed. It was the definition of "pressure-packed".

From this event, a single moment presented itself that became my definition of "heart". Charlie faced an intelligent safety play from Mika and his only option was to attempt a ridiculously low-percentage jump-kick to back-cut  his remaining stripe in the side pocket. Not only did Charlie sink the shot, but he followed it up with a table-length tough cut on the 8-ball to win that game.

Imagine yourself in this stressful situation. Could you sink those shots with the knowledge that 6 amateurs (and your wife & children back home) are relying on you to win them a share of $50,000? Charlie Bryant can...and did.

That man has "HEART".

Charlie is one of my all-time favorite players. I love his style. He's also, in my opinion, one of the best player-instructors out there. SMART guy. Nothing like meeting someone EXPLOSIVE like him who's also the nicest guy in the world.

HILLLLLLLLBILLY ON THE HILLLLL

Hillbilly is a great player. Seeing him play last month in Shannon's tournament here in NC was awesome. Some of the things he did in both one pocket and ten ball were unreal. He's also a genuine, no-nonsense type of guy willing to talk to folks, help them out, and just in general have a good time. He's a credit to pool.

Hillbilly is the man. I've personally got a few lessons from him and he knows what he speaks. He is one of the premier pro instructors out there and has been on fire doing very well in tournaments. I look forward to his much anticipated book. He has done really well this year in his home state of NC. At the Carolina Open he lost his first match to Jason Klatt and then came all the way through the losers side to meet Johnny Archer in the finals and snapped it off. Recently in Fayetteville NC for Shannons Players Championship, Charlie took 3rd in both events.

Keep up the great shooting Charlie.

Charlie was so pumped after that shot that he took a time out so he could come the emotions back down to earth.
