Choosing a Table - Caught on the horns of a dilemma

I recently moved into a new home. One of the criteria was that the home have a space for a table. I was able to determine that I have enough room for a 9' table and verified that in an earlier post here on AZBilliards (20'-2" x 16'+).

I had planned to order a Diamond Professional with pro cut pockets; if not this month then next month; I've wanted one for years.

Then I ran into a Craigslist ad for a 9' Bruswick GC IV, black with gold trim. The table is currently disassembled and stored in a climate controlled facility. The GC is priced at $4,500. The table is located just south of the DFW metroplex, 1 to 1-1/2 hours from my home. I'm on the far northeast edge of Dallas.

I realize that there are die hard GC fans as well as die hard Diamond fans but I'd like some idea what I'd be giving up and/or gaining if I went with the GC. I'd also need the name of a *GOOD* table mechanic to pick it up and set it up.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

What are the dominant tables in your area or tourneys that you play in? If they're more GCs I'd get that, if they're mostly diamonds I'd get that. I would buy what you would spend the most time on when away from home.

If it has factory pockets, the corners are 5" sides 5 1/2" so if you want procut pocmets then add that to the cost of the table as well, then add delivery & set up too....and, you have no idea how its going to turn out until after youve already paid in full. If you want the rails done right, make sure you hire someone thats going to do the work right the first time, or you may just be paying someone else to fix them right...and $4500 is way to high for a stock GC in the first place....so, your going to have more cost invested than a new Diamond.

Make sure you add all the costs for the both tables. Not cheap to have a table setup and delivered.
BTW, I went with a Diamond Professional instead of $1500 GCIII that would have needed at least $1000 to deliver, setup and if I wanted rail work done you can add much more.

Well you started you post basically saying you bought a house so you could fit a diamond pro or pro-am table. You also said you always wa red one. If you always wanted one then getting something else will leave you still wanting the diamond or wondering what it would be like. Also even if you got tournament used it would be like a new table compared to a table with years of play or storage on it. Just a few thoughts.

Youve invested this much to get what you want. And it sounds like you wanted a Diamond 9'. Don't stop now.

I agree with the price being a concern for the GC. I picked up a GC2 last year (probably not quite as nice as the one you are looking at) for 1200 and paid 1050 more to have the rails redone, pockets resized, and new simonis 760 on it. 2250 out the door.

If I had it to do over again if money was no object though, I would get a diamond for sure. Simply because they were a lot less noisy which is a huge plus for the home environment when the wifey goes to bed.

This was somethig I failed to consider before purchasing.

Noise is a huge factor if you don't live alone or in a 8000 foot compound.

I debated this decision myself for a long time. Decided to go with the Diamond Pro-am.
My only regret is not ordering the table sooner! Now the waiting game..

Call Diamond and see what your total price is with delivery and install.

Brand new table and not have to worry about what you are going to get like with the GC4 and how the rail work will turn out.

Might be worth it to go look at the GC. With the table apart you could learn a lot and check its condition and see if everything is there. You could also see if the price is negotiable.

The black GC4 had a premium price when new and I think commands more money than the brown ones and looks better too. But that price is about double what you should pay.
The rubber is flush with the rail but will still transfer rubber to your shaft, just not as bad as the earlier GCs.

You are just silly to even consider the GC4 for anywhere near that price. Just get the Diamond Pro with the factory 4 1/8 corners or the stock 4.5 in pockets. It's a lifetime investment and should be treated as such.

GC price is too steep, stick with the Diamond since that is what you wanted. Your room size should be just fine for a 9 footer!!

you will find its a lot more fun to have loose pockets on your home table. hanging balls and missing isnt fun. if you are a run out player then thats fine. but for the average decent player that can still run a rack of nine ball here and there a tight table isnt so much fun after a while. get at least 4 1/2 inch pockets.

I never heard of a black gc with gold hardware.

A lot of franken-tables out there...better make sure a great mechanic does the knockdown/ move/ setup, if you go with a used table.

Shit, no matter what table you get, don't skimp on the install, imo.
