I just got back from hitting a few racks with the like new condition "Varney 2000" I acquired from Joe of BamaCues this week. While all of the Hella Balou was going on with KV... of which I was right out there in muck calling him out for his day in court, I saw that Joe had this Older Varney up for a rather reasonable price. So... while I would never put a nickel in Mr. Varney's hands due to his attitude & back door games. With everyone occupied, I sneaked this one like a traitor in the night just so I could see what an 8 year old Varney might taste like. I felt kinda dirty, but now I come clean. Hee Hee
The cue can still be seen at;

I guess it has been refinished recently, because it is seriosuly "LIKE NEW".
Now for the reason I bought it. I play with a plain jane Blevins cue that I would not sell for $1000. I don't know if I would ever sell it. All because of the hit and feel of the hit it produces with it's little 12 mm shafts. I wanted to see how the infamous Varney stacks up to my Blevins in the hit department.
First the drum.... I mean cue roll. The Varney 2000 is absofrickinglutely straight after all these years?? I didn't even ask Joe Bama about that before hand. Definitely Straight.
The hit..... hmmm definitely one of the most solid hits out there with 12.75 mm tips, but I think this one leans to the word "hard" as opposed to "solid with nice feedback". I could see why his cues break extremely well, but I never got that same sense of feeling the energy transfer to the cueball when I hit it like I do with my Blevins. Better than most, just not in league with my Blevins. Reminded me of the Steve Klein I used to have. Very stiff hitting cue with little feedback. Of course that was back in 1999-2000, so I am sure Steve's and Kevin's cuemaking has matured some.
Is it a keeper? YEP! Now, I hope Mr Varney figures out how to do better business customer service where he isn't pi$$ing so much future bu$iness away. I am sure he has his share of problems making ends meet like a lot of up and coming cuemakers. He makes a solid cue. Not sure it's worth spending a year to wait for. I know Ernie Martinez just came back on the scene late last year and he has been filling orders for more complex cues in less time. Ernie is a Master and has had his share of problems, but his attitude with his customers has never been the problem. I would wait 2 years for a cue from Ernie. I like Ernie a lot.
Lastly..
After all the recently declared war of the worlds opver Varney's business practices, It must be said> If a man gives Kevin Varney 100% up front payment and Kevin says the cue will be there in 1 week, 2 mos, or even 6 months and you come on AZB crying a year later about not receiving your cue as promised...... I say too F'in bad. After this, I could care less if KV takes someone to the cleaners. We have all seen what can happen when you prepay and wait..... and wait...... and wait......... I would never pay 100%. In fact I only had to wait a few days for mine. Oh... maybe that is why I buy pre-owned. 100% down for a cuebuild leaves no leverage whatsoever.
