Classiest Player

I think that's Marlon Manalo is a real gentleman. Oliver Ortmann, too. Once, I saw him coorrecting a referee wich gave him ball in hand after an error of judgment. You can tell me that's normal, but a lot of player will not do that...

This tread make me think about a quote:

"Billiard is a sport of gentlemen. You recognize very quickly the s.....s, the dishonest. It is very good "way" to judge a person." Laurent Baffie
Oliver has my vote, too. I emailed him years ago, asking him a bunch of questions, as I am a huge fan of his. He took the time to answer all of my questions, and thanked me for my email of encouragement. I got a letter from him weeks later again thanking me for my kind words, and he sent me three autographed pictures of him, one personalized and two generic autograph. He did this all at no charge to me. That's awesome.

Having said that, it occurs to me, that a lot of the young players are pretty classy individuals. It really only takes a couple of players at an event to ruin the atmosphere and leave a negative impression to people who arn't used to them or expected differently.

Efren may lack some social graces and may have a bit of a checkered past, but I have to salute the man. His intentions seem pretty honorable and he is not all "full of himself". The fans flock to watch him and he rarely disappoints them. He is a gracious winner and loser. His generosity towards his fellow countrymen and family is well documented. The pool World could use many Efren's. IMO.

Rather we admitt it or not, the younger players are becoming more and more image concious.

Class is also defined by how one conduct himself among others. Another player related this story to me. He was drunk as a skunk when he challenged Efren to a one-pocket match. He lost the session and went to pay up. Efren declined with a smile. In telling the story to me later, the player said to me, "Now that is class." Even though Efren doesn't mirror the society definition of class, he is a class act through and through as evidenced by his monetary support of the multitude and humanitarian support to the kids of his country.:)

Several people voting for Robles. I've never met him or heard him in an interview. Now I'm curious.

Jim

Tony Robles ,Miki ,still alive

And dead i can say if you are dead you must look real bad at this point don't you think????

I only have met one really famous player, Mike Massey, and I can't even IMAGINE the guy being anything but super nice and classy. He usually dresses pretty sharp too, suspenders have class.

In terms of good manners, a lot of the europeans show tons of class. I've always liked toasti and engert's sportsmanship, as well as souquet's and ortmann's. I guess that's way too many nominees.

I don't know any of the dead guys, but I've heard that mosconi could be a little surly if an audience member did any small thing that might seem like sharking to him. I kinda wanna second the deacon, but I heard he once was teaching straight pool to a noob and ran 200+ balls on the guy, then played safe... that's just mean, lawl.

I want to put in a vote for Weenie Beanie. I get the impression he was truly a class act. Check out this remembrance of him from his daughter:

PS: That pic is a gem, with earl and jose. It's just the epitome of an over-the-table argument.

So many that have already been mentioned, Fisher, Robles, Rempe, Lawrence, the one name I haven't seen that should make the list is Max Eberle.

great thread, I have to say Tony Robles is one of the most likeable guys I have ever met. I spent a day with him prepping for a charity exhibition we did a few years ago. We also had Nick Varner, Ralf Souquet, Charlie Williams and Mika. It was a great night with these guys. I used to manage Classic Billiards in Phoenixville which Cindy Lee owned (now running Dragon for Charlie) which explains how we could get all these players on one night. Tony really is a very cool guy

I Have Played With All These Guys And My Vote Is
Crane, Cranfield, And Jack Colivetia, steve Mizerack

Nick Varner Is My Favort, Cm Lee, And Ray Martin, Tony Crosby, And Roblis...all Great Guys

i know i'm gonna step on a few people's toes here but i mean no offence.

i think this thread is a bit silly. all people are doing is saying "x player is a great person" "no y player is a wonderful person" "i love z player, what a man" etc etc etc!

whilst well intentioned it's a bit pointless! and i only say this cus the thread is now eleven pages long!

anyway i say we use the other definition of class. so my two votes go to earl and bustamante.

francisco has slick black combed back hair, a monster break which looks so cool the way he kicks up his back leg, and possibly the smoothest coolest cue action you will ever see. class act!

secondly, earl the peal. watch him make a few balls when he is feeling it. now that's class.

To me, Stefano Pelinga is the very definition of class for current pool players.

Yes, Stefano is one of the classiest men in all catagories. For the ladies, Jasmine Oushan, Lori Jon Jones, Jean Balukas, Ewa Lawerance
