Cole Dickson at the DCC

> George Fels told this one in BD. Earlier in his career,a younger player or maybe even a reporter asked Cole about his somewhat careless position play. This was his response.

"Position? I never miss nothin' anyway,so what's the f**kin' difference?" Tommy D.

Not quite, Tommy...

...it was, "I never miss nothin' NOHOW, so what the bleep's the difference?"
Chicago got to see Cole at 16, when nobody knew him. Even on a 5' x 10', he was out of sight. His first victim? None other than the Beard, playing banks.GF

Not quite the whole story, Georgie

The beginning of the story was, a teenaged Cole Dickson played me banks on a 5 x 10, (table 14) and banked 8 and out the first game. However, my safes and the big table prevailed, and I broke Cole, who was short money to begin with. His girl friend and the kid he had went on the road with, then left town. Cole stayed on and bunked with Joey Lapidus in the hotel around the corner. Joey took him around hustling, and when he left Chicago he went to Johnston City.
However, If I remember right, I do believe Cole received zero action playing 9 ball in Bensingers.

Cole at 16

I'm not sure I remember him getting ANY action at Bensinger's after his first night or two. He just hung out with Lapidus, running his mouth, and considering the latter's track record, I doubt he was taken anyplace where he could do any good. Only scores I ever saw him make were in Freddy's 4 B's club, where he beat his host fairly regularly and tore Seattle Joe Salazar to shreds on a bar box. GF

Cole was the only teenage pool player I ever knew of that would hop a plane to New York or Miami on his own just to look for action. He wasn't afraid to go anywhere and play anybody.

Back when Hawaiian Brian was robbing everyone everywhere he got a taste of Cole's action. After it was all over, Brian said, "I ain't messin' with that kid anymore. He never misses a ball." Cole is one of the few players who ever offered Brian weight and got turned down. I think they finally ended up playing with Brian getting the seven ball. That one didn't turn out too well for Cole. Brian was one smart cookie!

Cole never cared much for tournaments. He wanted to gamble and bet high, especially at 9-Ball. I would put him in Keith's class at that age. Just a notch under Ed Kelly or Richie Florence. Billy Cardone, Bernie Schwartz and Buddy Hall were other players who might have had a slight edge over Kid Cole. There weren't many players in the entire country who could hang with the 18 year old Cole. Just a handful. Cole's style was more like Greg Stevens. See it, shoot it, make it!

I meant to ask Cole about his early match-ups with Denny Searcy in S.F. but forgot. After playing with Denny a few times, no one else would seem too tough.
