Hi all, I wish to announce that a new book on One Pocket is soon to be released. This book is my own creation and I have spent well over a year and a half in developing an in depth analysis of the aggressive side to the game.

The book is entitled "One Pocket, a game of controlled aggression" This book is geared toward helping players who currently possess most of the cueing skills to become proficient in understanding the principles needed to play One Pocket on a high level.

Send me a PM if you would like more information about when it will be released or how to purchase a copy. I have included an excerpt from the preface to give you an idea of what to expect.

Thanks.

Tom Wirth

Preface

Controlled aggression is not simply a strategy, it is an attitude, an attitude which should be in your thoughts every time you step to the table. Your first thought should be, “How can I capitalize on this situation?” Do not confuse aggressive play with offense play. They are not the same thing. Aggressiveness is all about exacting the most damage to your opponent’s position and creating situations intended to maximize your ability to win. These shots can be defensive in nature.

Carefully studying the situations described in these chapters will help develop your imagination and an aggressive mind. Armed with a constant search for the maximum possibilities you will discover that many times what appears to be strictly defensive positions are in fact offensive opportunities.

A defensive mind set will overlook many opportunities readily visible to players who think aggressively. This does not mean that every situation has an offensive answer. Controlled aggression is the first step thinking in discovering the highest yield from acceptable risk. This attitude is all about maintaining a constant positive approach to every situation. This aggressive but controlled attitude takes training, and that training begins with this book and the practice table.

Several good books, DVDs, and videos have been written and produced on the game of One Pocket, but this book approaches instruction in a new way. Many books cover in great detail and quite well the various one, two, and three rail systems for kicking and banking balls. You will not find this type of information within this book. Nor will you find references to the “how to” for speed control, cue ball control, finding dead balls within clusters, or any detailing of the various methods used for specific throw shots, massés, or jump shots. You will not find aiming systems. This is not a “how to” book, it is a “what to” book. My intention is to help you learn how to think with controlled aggression, imagination, and greater “One Pocket logic”.

This book is primarily devoted to the strategic side of One Pocket. We will delve into thoughts dealing with risk verses reward, playing the score, maintaining momentum, using imagination to set and escape traps, and ways to enhance the quality of your game in both obvious and subtle ways. We will discuss patterns for running high numbers of balls into a single pocket. We will look at a few obscure specialty shots which are usually visible only to the most astute and experienced of One Pocket players.

The intention here is to teach you how to think about the game with logic, strategic thinking, and consideration; not only for the score of the game but also for the disposition and skill of your opponent. You will learn to play the “game within the game”. The name of that game is; “Get the first shot”. That first shot is not some flier which has limited prospects of finding the pocket but instead is a shot which by all rights you should be able to make consistently given your skill level.

Within these pages you will learn that “well timed moves” or “traps” if you will, are far more likely to produce winning sessions than fabulous shot making skills ever will. You will also find in this book numerous photographic images of One Pocket situations you may encounter in any competitive game. These images have been purposely constructed to provide basic knowledge of specific shots which are typically used to either exploit a positional advantage or counter the current advantage your opponent holds. In some cases these images will show more than one potential response to a situation. In these cases, images of the various results will be displayed and a short explanation describing the best solutions for each example will follow. Before viewing the solutions it is recommended that you consider your own solution to each of the positions presented.

For those that don't know, Tom is a great player with a wealth of knowledge and experience. PM sent.

Thanks for taking the time to publish your knowledge - I would like to purchase your book!

Amen, Tom.

You know I am in for a copy, as a lifelong DC resident and one who can attest to Your pool chops!

I don't play one pocket at this time. If i decided to start it sounds like this book may be a good starting point. Couple questions, will it be hard cover or paperback and will the initial run be limited, and how much will it cost?

PM sent. THx

The book will be spiral bound so it can be laid flat on a pool table. This way each situation can be duplicated and practiced without damaging the spine of the book. All photos are in full color and there are well over a hundred.

As long as there is a demand for the book I will continue printing. This is all through self publishing so the first printing is limited so get your order in as early as possible. I will begin accepting orders within a few weeks with all the details of how to order, the price, and where to send your payment. I will make an announcement at that time along with an email address for that purpose.

I greatly appreciate all your quick and enthusiastic responses to this new book and I will continually pass along periodic news of its progress.
