Comments on Willie Moscont

:rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: Sure! LOL...especially since all of those guys (and almost everybody else) WERE hustlers and gamblers...character traits that Mosconi publicly despised. Respect? Not likely. More likely that they just didn't give a sh!t because no $$$ was involved...pretty much the same reason as today.

Like somebody else said...put a bounty on it of at least $100K, with a limited time frame. It would have to be in one place, and live streamed with a referee to prevent cheating. You could make bets on a particular player breaking the record. I would make it so that every player who coughed up the entry fee got 1-3 chances to break the record...just like they do at the DCC. Even then, I doubt that the record would even be equaled, let alone broken...but it would sure be fun to watch them try!

fair enough, but i remember watching jean balukas on charlie rose, telling a story about being confronted by a top male pro while on her way to a match against an aged irving crane, who threatened to punch her in the face if she won... seems out of line with the law of the jungle, zero-respect hustler mentality you're describing.

Who was that who said one great pool player held another record?
Number of times of going to dinner without picking up the tab was his record.:D

IMO, if there was a $1 Million bounty on a player to run 527 on a standard 9' GC, and we could pick any player in their prime, I'd go with Mark Taddemy.

I think he has the skill, but more importantly, he has the skill of hunger, and being locked in a room for a month straight until he did it. I think other players, even Shane or Wu or Alex, would get tired of the challenge and quit after a week of non stop playing. Mark would never quit.

IMO:)

Put a champion of the past on the conditions today they would do the same. Champions do what it takes ,use what is there at the time .As far as kicking take those chickin stick no kicking ability little cues out.Who did Mosconi ever refuse to play? If every poolroom and bar had 41/2 in. pockets their how many could stay open. The internet champs amaze me. Its like the golfers that want to shoot 100plus on 7500yd. golf courses.

at the absolute best, this would look like today's american pros (minus shane) compared to the top asians and europeans.

When you have a guy like Dennis who only plays straight pool a few times a year and puts up a 200+ run I can't help but think he would run 500+ balls if he played it day after day. If somehow a gofundme account was set up or a big enough bounty was put on the task the record would be broken, sooner than later. Again jmho

I agree completely. Drive, commitment, hard work, intelligence, and focus is what makes a champion in any field.

right, if john schmidt and danny harriman are running 400's, it's just a matter of having an incentive to keep at it until the stars align.

if the top guy's dedicate themselves to it, the record gets crushed... fast.

I wonder why do folks think the equipment is "harder" today. Better balls, better tables, faster cloth, better cues, better shafts, better tips, better chalk ;) Heck, what about humidity and AC, big difference too.

I don't know what is NOT better in terms of equipment today then in the past ? So, Mosconi might have won 30 World Championships instead of only 15 ;)

There have been multiple runs exceeding Mosconi's run (even Mosconi himself proportedly did it). Mosconi's run is considered the record because it was in an exhibition in front of an audience. Yea, sure, XYZ top pro may be able to beat the record if you lock him in a basement and don't let him out until he beats it, but in any kind of competition setting? Not likely.

Hey while we are talking about stuff like this,

Who was better, Muhammad Ali, or Mike Tyson?.....

1. Willie played so well, he didn't put himself in a 'position where you have no shot.

B. To opine Willie didn't go into the rack fully for any reason other that as a result of his prowess is jus...an opinion.

he was a master of a largely lost art.

One of the things that distinguished Mosconi's play was how he went into the stack.

He knew just the right angle and at what point to go into the rack, and the precise spot on the CB with exactly the right speed, for the CB to go entirely through a stack of 14 balls. It was really something to see how his CB would just kind of muscle it's way through, seemingly stopping and starting up again, to make it clear to the other side. I try doing that and am lucky to do it every few dozen attempts. He did every time. It was amazin'.

No one, including the man who actually set the record, would take that bet! So what are you proving? Also, no one has said it would be "so easy" for them to do it. People are trying to say that the record could be broken on the same equipment if someone cared enough to do it. I agree with that. Good luck finding someone to take your imaginary and ridiculous bet.

Another thing I have to ask. Why did you say you'd bring Italian guys to help collect the winnings? Are you saying Jason might stiff you? Are Italian guys scary in Connecticut? I don't get it.

You just made my point- exactly- no one would probably take the bet because no one would be so confident as to think they can break the record- I was directing my bet to the person who made the ridiculous statements in this thread that he felt the record would be broken without any doubt-- my italian guy jab was all tongue in cheek my friend, and absolutely not directed at Jason, but at the guy who made statements that I know he would never back up with his $$$. I also do not think that my proposition is that out of line- I am offering any pro the opportunity to practice 14.1 on their own time for as long a they like, and when they feel they are ready to challenge the record- I offer to give them 3 full day eight hour sessions to do what they say they can do- I am asking someone to BET $20,000 on this against my $20,000- details can be worked out whenever someone has the confidence and the $20K to bring along with it.

The mountain gets steeper the further up you go.

Same with a 14.1 run -- it's not just a matter of multiplication or saying well: if he can run 100 he can run 200 because that is just not so.

Sure. Neither one of those guys would like to be known as the player who broke the record.

I would bet against Willie himself on that bet...in his prime.
