What EXACTLY constitutes and object ball being in the kitchen? Can the object ball be at all crossing the line or does the entire ball have to be past the line to be out of the kitchen and therefor a shootable ball in 8ball when your opponent scratches on the break.

I suppose I would like to know how much of the cue ball can be past the line as well.
 
cue ball can be on the line but not over, object ball cannot be on the line. I'm just going by memory, and I've been dyslexic in the past, so if I got it backwards... consider yourself warned lol.
 
Actually, I've seen this called two different ways. One way goes by the base of the ball, and the other goes by the edge of the ball. I'm not certain of the written rule, but I tend to agree with those who argue that the edge of the ball is much easier to discern than the base of the ball.

IMO, the base of the CB or OB needs to be on the line to the kitchen or in the kitchen area to be in the kitchen.

The cue ball may be adjusted by the player�s hand, cue, etc., so long as it remains in hand. Once the cue ball is in play per the above, it may not be impeded in any way by the player; to do so is to commit a foul. Additionally, if the shot fails to contact a legal object ball or fails to drive the cue ball over the head string, the shot is a foul and the opposing player has ball in hand according to the specific game rules.

I've always played - object ball on the line is in the kitchen if more than half of the object ball is in the kitchen side.
 
I've always used the contact (base) of the ball in relation to the center of the diamonds, not the entire ball.....
 
As Steev showed, the rule is based on where the bottom of CB or OB is touching the cloth, based on the head string...on the line is good; in front of the line is no good.

one more vote for base of the ball!!! just cause the ball may be touching the line, don't mean its in.
 
Base of the ball. Point in case. Where do you place the head ball when racking. The base is on the spot. Also when is the ball in the pocket. When the base is in it. It if were just the edge the ball could still be on the table.
 
Duplicate post. It was taking forever and didn't know if it was taking so I hit the button again. Many times it don't take and I leave only to find that the post was not made. Hate when that happens.

That's the correct way but in beer joints they nearly always argue it's the edge of the cue/object ball.
 
It doesn't make any difference if playing Texas Express 9-ball. But whenever I gamble at One Pocket, I always clear this up with my opponent before we begin. It makes no difference to me which method is chosen, as long as we are in agreement.

I prefer going by the CENTER of the ball. This means you can shoot at an object ball if its center is past the line. Likewise, when placing the cueball after a scratch, its center must be on teh other side of the line. This means that the last possible spot the cue ball can be placed is the first spot the object ball can be placed on.

The other method is the EDGE of the ball. For the object ball, its trailing edge must be past the line. And for the cue ball, its leading edge must be before the line. This means there is actually an area of exactly one ball width that neither object ball nor cue ball can be placed in.

In my area, every single person I know plays by the edge of the ball method. They even look at me funny when I give them the option of the center of the ball method before we begin a session.

First of all, you have to understand that the base of the ball (the part touching the table) is what you should be looking at. If this part of the ball is touching the line in any way the ball is in the kitchen.
 
Thanks guys. I feel so much better now. I think this is one of the most underated misunderstood rules that more people should know.
