Congrats Allen Hopkins!

I had heard from one of the voting members less than 7 years ago, that a vote for the Hall of Fame inductee was done via a teleconference with a verbal vote, i.e., "All in favor, say aye." There were three selections to choose from for two categories at that time. Today they only vote in one person, it seems, as opposed to the two they used to vote in for the two different categories of player and meritorious contributions.

The person moderating the teleconference then determined which person would be inducted into the hall of fame, and nobody even counted the votes. The voting member who told me this is a very prominent and well-known industry member, but I will not reveal his/her identity.

I am very happy to learn that Allen Hopkins was voted into the BCA's Hall of Fame. This is a big step for the advancement of pool and gives the BCA a little credibility for doing the right thing.

Now if they can only sponsor American professional pool a little bit better, the way other countries do it, there just may be another day in paradise.

Long overdue! Hopefully he was inducted as a player and not for 'meritorious service'. I think most people tend to only think of him in terms of the super billiards expo and never got to see (or just forgot) what a great player he was.

was? :D don't ever underestimate Allens game now! He played great at the Derby this year, and last weekend he split a finals with Joey Testa I think it was up in Jersey? The man is still an animal on the table!

I know you didn't mean anything by it jjr..... some folks might not know he's still playing unless your from the north east.

great news ,and as an old straight pool player who played allen in a local tournement in nj.....allen was very young and ran 80 and out to win ...i am proud to see another great player from jersey,Miz, Martin, etc: join the ranks..seeing these players when they were young (15/16) was great...i also played Margo when he was real young....would love to see straight pool come back....Bravo Young Hoppy!

Not only does Allen Hopkins still cash in pool tournaments TODAY, but he has been known to keep action alive and well on the East Coast.

Allen Hopkins shows no fear and will step up to the plate and play ANYBODY.

Of course, today, he is a family man with responsibilities, but make no mistake about it, Allen Hopkins is an American legend, a road warrior, and the last of a dying breed.

I wish therre would be some TV coverage of Alan's induction into the Hall of Fame. Nobody is more deserving than him. The other day someone told me that Alan Hopkins is one of the best 8-ball players in the world. It would be interesting to watch a video of him playing 8-ball.

That's amazing, I guess a champion straight pool player can also play run-out one pocket. Where does that put him in the ranking for one pocket players?

I don't know about now, but he was a top 5 one pocket player for a long time. He did win the 1991 Legends of One Pocket tournament, beating Steve Cook. I think this is the one where one of the games takes about two hours!

Yeaa Hoppy......

Bout time they realize the man you are and leave all the politics out the voting process. I love ya brother, and congrates. I will call your cell to get together today...........

Allen Hopkins in Hall of Fame

This is way overdue as Allen Hopkins has been a champ at 14.1, 9-ball and one pocket. CONGRATULATIONS ALLEN HOPKINS

I whole heartedly agree with every comment in this thread but SJM echoed my sentiments exactly! At last, justice IS done. The BCA lost more and more credibility each time Earl was passed over. They repeated the same mistake in passing over Allen Hopkins, which, I believe, was their way of "punishing him" for having the Super Billiard Expo that rivals their annual BCA Expo. It was pure politics. BUT, that's all in the past now!
Looks like the BCA Hall of Fame voting is getting a long overdue makeover as well. Something more akin to other sports voting.

IMO, the Women's LPGA has one of the, if not *the* best system for Hall of Fame. It's based on X amount of wins, years, and majors.

In the 80's, it was easily argued that Allen Hopkins was the best one-pocket player in the U.S. Certainly one of the top two or three.

He is also one of the smartest 8-ball players in the world.

A funny quote by Mike Sigel at a 14.1 tourney around 1993.....I asked him how good Allen was "back in the day"......Mike said...

EVERYONE, ducked Allen's action........but me! :D

I thought that was about as strong as it gets from a fellow World Champ!

I have been on the selection committee for three years now. The voting is done by a closed (and private) voting process, and you can vote for as few or as many players as you like. Anyone getting chosen on 75% of the ballots gets in, whether it is one or five players.

That is GREAT news to hear, Jay. :)

What I was referring to happened approximately 5 or 6 years ago, SUBJECT TO CHECK, and the voting for the Hall of Fame inductees by the Hall of Fame Committee members occurred on a teleconference call.

It is nice to know that things have changed for the better, thanks to pool phenoms like yourself being involved.

Here's a video of Hopkins running 15 and out playing at the DCC 1-Pocket Challenge. The man can still play!:)

http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1407538490&channel=1138548612

I sat right there and watched this run. At the beginning of the rack, I wouldn't have given him any chance of running all fifteen. He did it so effortlessly and with such perfect control. Notice how he never over hits any shot, and how he wipes his hand on the rail between shots to keep his palm dry.

How he has never won a One Pocket title at DCC amazes me. I blame that on a certain Mr. Reyes. :)
Allen has been one of the top five One Pocket players for maybe 25 years now.
