Considering a tip change.

Been back playing three weeks now and thinking of trying the Kamui black. Presently I use Moori medium. But my cues haven't been used much in the last few years. So I am thinking that this might be a nice time to try out something new.

Not sure f I should go with a softer tip or not after reading some old posts.

Guess I'm old fashioned. You can try them all and spend $35 on some of the fancy layered tips. Soft, semi soft , ultra soft, medium soft, soft medium. Whatever. After all of the experimenting you'll end up with a single layer tip that costs a buck apiece.

A really good player could play with a phenolic tip and beat 85% of the other players because he's got the gear, the stroke, and the confidence that comes from hitting a million balls.

Sorry if I come off a little cynical but the pool equipment industry has turned into a marketing game to my way of thinking.

I will get my Revo shaft too when it reaches $700. Then I'll know it is really good.

Chris Renfro of this forum makes a great tip. (outsville.com) I have his Ki-tech medium/soft single layered on a playing shaft and I love it.

I have been playing with pressed elkmasters for years btw

Changing tips is not the end all be all. Play with the tip you have until it must be changed. For me, if it holds its shape and chalk, that's all you need. Put your money into table time.

You just started playing again and you are already getting into the new tip thing, oh no!!

Don't think anyone can say what tip you would want to use, it depends on what you like and how your cue plays. If you are playing with an old Moori medium and like the hit, it's probably playing closer to a hard than a medium now. So if you like that hit, go for a medium. A Kamui Black medium or Brown should feel pretty close to your Moori.

Where are you playing now? You went to a USAPL league, out of where?

If I were going to spend $20-plus on a tip, I'd buy a G2 Soft.

If I were going to spend way, way less and have a very similar tip, I'd buy an Ultra-skin Soft.

I had Kamui tips before I ever bought the G2 or Ultra-skins and I'd NEVER go back to Kamui.

Imo, you owe yourself a try of pooldawg8's milk dud tips. He is a member here.

The cost is a fraction of layered tips and in my experience, the retain their playing characterists throughout their life...unlike many layered, which are prone to glazing and hardening.

Tell um bb sent you. He will give you a special price...0.50 extra charge. Not really.

Hey hang the 9,

I went to Amazing Billiards in Malden. I played ok, maybe half as well as I did in the past, just kept choking plus the tables are far faster than the ones at the Elks.

What I decided to do as per some good suggestions is let my stroke out. Made a big difference.

Still not perfect but man it feels great.

As for the yips, they are feeling a little hard (not gripping more so punching). I like to feel the cue ball more (or that's what I remember ).

So what I was looking for with this post is feed back on the Kamui tips. He'll don't even know if Mooring is still around anymore (😨 )...

Pete,

I'm actually heading to Amazin for some practice tonight. I have a few shafts with G2 soft and medium tips. You're welcome to stop by and try them.

Long ago, I played with Moori medium hard when those existed, then the medium. It was my favorite tip. My understanding is that Moori tips are not the same anymore, and not manufactured by the same person anymore.

I haven't felt anything that feels exactly like an old Moori. G2 is close, as is Precision. Kamui brown is a bit further away, and Kamui black is quite different.

I'd try G2 medium. It is an excellent all around tip.

Hope it helps. If you want to stop by this evening, feel free to message me on Facebook (Kerry McAuliffe)

LePro, Triangle, or Milkduds from Jeff, (pooldawg8). It's just that simple Pete!

I can't understand the love affair with the
soft tips. I went to a Morri hard and
am not looking back. I can spin as much as anyone.
I can draw the shit out of a cue ball.
The tip never needs reshaping and has never
glazed. Going on it's third year. Might make it to
the 4th before I have to replace it.

The best part is it plays the same from beginning to end.
I heard Milk Duds have similar (hard) feel and
characteristics to them. Haven't tried them yet myself yet.

A good triangle. The bluegrass medium or medium softs are pretty great as far as layered tips go. I’d skip the Kamui’s, overpriced and hyped imo

I personally love the Onyx tip by Tiger but I think Tom Hay's Ultraskin medium comes real close at about a tenth the price!

Always a good idea to try something different, if only so you have to work again to adjust to new conditions (always a good exercise!).

I'd not spend 20$ or so for "a try".
Ultraskins and SIB, Kamikaze tips (Elite) and even Milkduds are good choices if you want to experiment and they are not not expensive.
Please allow some time for you to get adjusted to the new tip - 2 evenings or so.

Depending on your style of play going to a softer tip is always good idea and worth a try.
It will react quite different and you can start to work on real soft and precise playing or on using very controlled (or extreme) spin.

If you are a hard player per default (and you don't want to change it) then of course it's not for you.
Softer tips usually need more maintenance that medium to hard ones. If that frustrates you then again it's not for you.

Cheers,
M
