Hi PREY, there is a video of Cornbread playing Strawberry brooks on youtube, several different segments of it there, check it out, iam sorry i have no idea how to put a link up.

They are playing in a 1 pocket tournament, Cornbread looks to be pretty old in that match, probably late 80s or early 90s, not his age, i mean the year!

IMHO Red played world class One Hole, but a slight notch below the BEST players of his time. He was arguably the best in the world on a 5 X 10 snooker table.

As far as his 9 Ball game went, he would play anyone for large amounts of cash. He didn't always win but he booked more than his share of winners, playing like God under pressure for a lotta cash. I once asked him if he had change for a $100, He said, "Son, that IS change" lol !

[QUOTE Read RED's Book several times, great read, and he was a unique pool player.[/QUOTE]

I have an autographed ( in my presence) copy of that book buried somewhere in a storage tub.

I saw him play many times in the 70's and 80's in the Detroit area.

I always like to divide the pro players into Three Tiers - Top, Middle and Bottom

In one pocket he was not only a Top Tier player but also a legend. He was considred by the historians/experts as a legendary one pocket player. He is a heavy duty gambler.

In 9 ball game he did play the pro speed and I rate him as Bottom Tier Pro player.

Rosco, if at some point, you find that book at the bottom of your storage tub, think of me when you dig it out ok. I wouldn't mind reading and owning that one.
Thanks.

It's funny.

Nine ball:
Red really didn't play as good in tournaments (and didn't care about them as much) as the top 9-ball players like Buddy Hall, Mike Sigel, Nick Varner, Billy Incardona etc. etc.....BUT.....he could give more weight to top players and win...than any of the guys I mentioned.

For example: He couldn't beat any of the above people playing 9-ball even but he would rob shortstops and road players giving up the 7,8 & the break that the above people had no chance winning giving up the same spot.

One pocket:
He's up there with the best ever.

His specialty was making a horrible game and giving up the nuts.

Why????

He always said you can make more giving up the nuts than you can with a fair game.....and he outran the nuts alot, that's why he's a legend.

To put it lightly...he was an animal. At all games and all tables.

I tried to play Cornbread, but the game never came off....I offered him the "Call 8" playing 9 Ball and he only wanted to play me One Pocket (this was before I had ever played one pocket seriously, so I had no chance).

Cornbread told me a story that I'm sure several of you have heard through the years. He was sent into a bar to play a big "Tush Hog" (tough guy) that played 9 Ball. He went in the bar, looked around and spotted the big guy at the bar drinking (he'd had a bad day unbeknownst to C.B.).

Cornbread marched up to the guy and tapped him on the back, the guy turned around and Cornbread said "what's your best game?" ...the guy looked at Cornbread and said, without hesitation "Fighting's my best game" and hit Cornbread square in the face.....C.B. stumbled back and landed on the floor almost unconscious.

C.B. rubbed his jaw, looked back up at the guy, marched right back to the bar and tapped him on the shoulder again.....the guy wheeled around and Cornbread smiled and ask "what's your 2nd best game?" The guy, surprised, said "9 Ball"......Cornbread emptied him out and told me with a smirk "I'm glad he didn't want to play a "tie breaker". :groucho:

LOL, good story.

I worked with a guy who was on one of the crap crews at the Stardust when CB made his big score on the dice there. It was something like 70 dimes or so. Now by todays games thats not really that big a deal as we have higher limits and multiple odds, but for then with a $500 limit and single odds, it was quite a feat indeed.
And he told me he was george with everyone that worked there and that was around him at the time, ya got to like a man like that.

Actually CJ, the guy was a snooker player, and he said "snooker" not 9 ball. Detroit Whitey had already beat on the guy and he sent Red into the heat-trap. Of course Red overcame it.
