Coronavirus and BCA Pool League World Championships

is anybody there yet?
Are they cleaning, are there instructions?
If the house ain't ready for this, I mean ready... :frown:

Starts tomorrow doesn't it?

Out of the ~4500 people that were tested.

Think about how many might have it right now and is not showing any symptoms? Reportedly people won't even be tested unless they are in serious condition, and guess what, pneumonia is not considered a serious condition. I have personal account of people who have been having fevers for 2+ weeks and was denied testing because CDC don't consider them to be in serious conditions.

Looking at the actual positive cases don't offer any clue as to how many has been infected or can carry the virus. Don't believe the stats because they can easily be manipulated.

After looking into it, I have to admit you are right on this. We simply don't know the extent of this disease in the USA due to slow testing. I don't think it is as bad as other countries because of our lower number of deaths, assuming the death rate of 22 is accurate, but we are really lagging.

We need to get our butts in gear and start getting people tested. With our resources to have not done this is an inexcusable situation.

Today I made the decision to cancel my trip to Las Vegas. I will lose the money I prepaid for my AirBnB booking but that's okay. I'd rather lose a few dollars than my life. Evergruven is correct, there is no vaccine and it is unquestionably spreading at an exponential rate. There is a good reason why so many events are being canceled and others are being played with no spectators. More every day now! Medical experts are advising to not take any cruises and avoid long plane flights if possible and to not attend any large gatherings.

I do have a pre-existing condition (chronic upper respiratory and bronchial inflammation due to asthmatic conditions), and am over the age of 75. That makes me a prime candidate to be severely affected if I were to contract this virus. So why take a chance at a gathering of literally thousands of people. I'm going to take a pass on this one and stay home.

I think each of us should make responsible decisions regarding our own personal situation.

Coronavirus is a "DEEP STATE FRAUD!"

MIT scientist Shiva Ayyadurai claims that coronavirus “fear mongering” is a “Deep State

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released last week found that Democrats are twice as likely as
Republicans to say that the virus poses an imminent threat to the U.S.

Hate to even bring it up.

What about Super Billiards Expo... Now there's a breeding ground for infection. 5 short weeks away.

Clearly you are uninformed. They quarantined a section of ny. A cruise ship sat off the port of SF for a week. Events like sxsw cochella are cancelled and postponed. You want to say it’s a political thing while the death toll rises. You are clearly uninformed and only care about yourself. It’s ridiculously selfish to go to this and bring whatever is floating around to your friends and family. Areas of the country are still unaffected you are just the reason it is spreading at the rate it is. With any luck the 3k that show up get quarantined to the rio convention center.

Its best to leave that crap on NPR. Lots of good information in this thread already. No need to infect it with this garbage.

I’m not sure where you’re getting your information from, but it’s not good to spread this type of information when it’s not true. I live and work in the Bay Area and have not heard of a single person who’s company has this policy. If your company does then just say that, but don’t make up stuff like this!!!!

PG&E sf and several other firms based in the financial district are having telecommute problems. So this is not spreading false information.

They shouldn't cancel the event unless there are so many people dropping out that it makes the event impossible to produce. It's not just their decision - they have contracts with huge performance clauses and so forth. The clauses don't allow cancellation due to vague apprehension of becoming ill. That's the way business works. Rationally you are at no greater risk being in Las Vegas than you are being in San Francisco.

You would be if you went to the mosconi center for a car show and there were 10’s of thousands of people there

I am appalled by the complete lack of caution displayed by some members here. In my opinion CSI/BCA should cancel or postpone this event until the virus is under control. With the US under testing possible cases, it's almost guaranteed that Las Vegas will have a lot more cases than reported. This virus is statistically deadly for people older than 50 and it is absolutely justified that some people would not want to attend due to health concerns.

I understand that canceling the event might put BCA in a tough spot financially, but they will get into serious litigation troubles when someone gets sick from this event, and i'd assume that'll put them in a worse situation than just canceling the event beforehand. A lot of big conferences have already been cancelled in vegas this year and I see no excuses that BCA couldn't cancel it right now.

I was supposed to attend ISC in between going to BCA and they cancelled it last week and it’s a huge deal in the security industry.

We've got to have common sense folks. Don't let fear take over your sensibilities.

Exactly.

The latest total of confirmed coronavirus cases is around 121,000 worldwide. Around 4,300 people have died from it. That seems alarming, especially if you listen or watch too much fear-mongering news. The insinuation is that of those who get the virus about 96% will survive and 4% will die.

Compare this to the regular flu, where an estimated 30+ million people get it every year in the USA alone, and around 30,000+ die. That means nearly 99.9% survive, according to "estimates".

But how many US flu cases are actually "confirmed" flu cases? We can't compare estimated flu data to actual confirmed coronavirus data. In order to put the coronavirus in proper perspective, we should be comparing apples to apples -- confirmed cases to confirmed cases.

According to the CDC and the US World Health Organization (WHO), about 1,100,000 people were tested for influenza during the 2018-2019 flu season.
Of those tested only about 177,000 were reported as positive/confirmed flu cases. The mortality rate of these confirmed influenza related cases (which includes pneumonia) was 5 to 7%, indicating that about 95% survived and 5% did not. This is pretty much the same when compared to confirmed coronavirus cases.

The CDC says that most flu cases go undiagnosed and most people don't get checked out by a doctor. They just buy over the counter meds and suffer through it, and therefore they estimate that the mortality rate is much lower than the 5 to 7% shown in confirmed cases. And so people don't freak out over the flu, due to the "estimated" numbers being less alarming than the actual reported numbers. The same should apply to this new coronavirus. What are the estimated numbers for this thing?

Hope to see some of you in Vegas next week!! But I will not be shaking any hands - it's fist bumps and head nods only. Lol

The regular flu does not cause this:

There is no reason to think that the coronavirus is not already spreading in the US the way it did in northern Italy. Certainly if our collective response to it, starting today (nothing we can do about yesterday), is anything less than deployment of full mitigation actions, the chances of it spreading as it has in northern Italy will be high. It is time for full sacrifice and togetherness on this, by everyone.

Actually, when conparing confirmed cases, the flu and the coronavirus are equally as deadly. The numbers that doctor gives in the article (463 deaths and 9000 confirmed cases) is pretty much exactly the same results/outcomes of the flu in the US, which has a weekly mortality rate between 5 and 7%, in accordance with the latest data from the 2018-19 flu season. And just like the coronavirus, pneumonia is the number #1 driver associated with that mortality rate.

The doctor gave some good advice.... Wash your hands frequently, avoid contact with large groups of people, especially in areas where the virus is rampant. These are the same precautions most of us take every flu season, and we don't avoid concerts or sporting events. We probably would if a large number of confirmed flu cases were found local, in your particular city. Like the few times I kept my daughters home, rather than sending them to school where too many kids reportedly had the flu.

Of course, if I come back from vegas feeling the slightest bit sick, well, I might change my tune! :embarrassed:
