Could this be the Future of Pool?

yet still, having the next 4 gigs run through leftist northern territories in hopes of cooler temps and with a $200.00 pass; pick a spot somewhere in the shade, catch natures majestic landscapes and maybe pick a team for your favorite, isn't a bad deal. Can one place a bet at the club house yet?

...and with the matches being in America, pga saboteurs in the crowds will be a game in itself.

had ballgames on most of the weekend, those ticker tapes that run at the bottom of the sceen had no mention of the liv golf, didn't happen to catch the local sports cast if it was highlighted. Be looking to see how that works for the local markets when here in states.

Pool people aka Player, Pro Players, League Operators, Scantioning Groups, Room, and Bar Owner do not understand the idea of working together.

They operate like Pack of Wolves find over pound of flesh.

PGATour is loaded with top players right now and won't miss a step without these guys. These guys got rich BECAUSE of the PGATour and now they run off on a money grab. I really hope the LIV falls flat on its face. Not a fan of who's running it or where the $$ is coming from. Even Phil made comments about the Saudi regime before he did a 180deg turn to chase $$ he can no longer win on the Tour.
We're 100% aligned on our feelings about this new tour. Where we disagree is whether the PGA tour would be stronger with these players that defected. OK to agree to disagree here.

I think the turn-out at the Canadian Open this weekend pretty much tells the story. Only Tiger could/can move the needle in any significant way. Those that have defected so far will have zero effect on the Tour. So-called 'strength of tour' is determined by tv #'s and crowd sizes. Neither one will be affected to any large degree by LIV.

I'm not taking a side here, but perhaps I can shed some light on this. This might be pool's future, but it's also pool's past. One upon a time, some players had to decide whether to honor certain commitments or ignore those commitments to chase more lucrative opportunities.

As noted, this issue has arisen before in pool, although the memories of how it was dealt with are pretty vague in my case. In 2006, Kevin Trudeau developed the IPT tour, an event series that consisted entirely of non-WPA sanctioned events. As many of us remember, the IPT's choice to steer clear of WPA caused some friction in the sport.

Both men's pool and women's pool had WPA sanctioned events on their schedules back in 2006, so pro pool had to deal with the contingency that players who had signed contracts with WPA sanctioned tours would violate those contracts by playing in the more lucrative IPT, perhaps even on the dates of another WPA sanctioned event.

The matter of and need for exclusive rights as they pertain to player contracts is not simple, but I'll try to offer, in oversimplified terms, the rationale. When a tour or proprietor approaches a potential venue sponsor to try to make a business deal to stage an event, its bargaining position is greatly strengthened if they can guarantee that its players under contract will not play in a competing event over the same dates. For this reason, having player contracts that enable a proprietor to make this promise was typically deemed advisable and to the advantage of all tour members.

Might a new tour emerge at some point that, like the IPT, offers greater riches than those otherwise available to pro players? Yes, it could, and the governing bodies of pool worldwide need to be ready for such a contingency.
I don't see that you could say it any better... On the money...

Actually, that's not the subject of the thread at all. The original post takes note of the escalating conflict in pro golf and asks whether something similar is possible in pool. The answer is that it can happen and, in fact, already has happened. Pool has already had to fade the money grab and the conflicts that surrounded the formation of the 2006 IPT, Kevin Trudeau's 8-ball tour.

There's very little in the thread about how to make pool better, but there is some consideration and critique of pool's present and a reflection on some of its past.
Sad but true I see Wright and wrong in both opinions, when I read this azb forum over the years I see the going up and going down of it all... One can almost say I'm for and against all... Guy ... Makes me wonder... Thank you Stu...

Does that mean that “drug free” zones in the hood actually have drugs? I saw those signs too…..

I know when I see a sign that says it’s “something” free zone. That’s where the highest amount of what’s not suppose to be there is at.

Just sayin’
I see that we the people are programed all our lives for this through the media... We're like the old person who will go to the trouble to get in their car and drive all the way across town to watch a bank robbery in action, Just to see the drama of it all ... Guy

IRL hurt open wheel racing until they reconciled with Champ Cars. Then they both benefited.

GrandAm hurt IMSA sportscar racing until they reconciled. Then they both benefitted.

AFL v NFL. ABA v NBA. Same; temporary disruption until they realized they needed each other for both to succeed.

Eventually, it may be that they both struggle until they agree to reconcile and join forces. But in this case, the funding is nearly limitless so the Saudis don’t have to worry about struggling.

They will eventually reconcile if the quality of the products is diluted. If not, the $ will win.

If they have diluted fields playing on second-rate courses they will struggle.

Saturday was not typical on way to Home Depot I stoped at Deli Sports Bar in next town over.

They use to have pretty good tourneys couple of nights with 30-40 players.

Saw manager opening up the Bar, so I stopped and asked if they have restarted their tournaments.

He replied we are not doing tournaments, we are doing better just having recreational play, and the clientele drink more.

Then he said don’t think we will ever do tournaments again. Things do change.

Place was always a dive, 5 or 6 Valley tables, but they did have good turnout for their tournaments.

Nice post. I'll add the NHL and WHA. The result was similar to what happened with the ABA, with a group of teams from the WHA absorbed by the NHL. Among the teams absorbed was the Edmonton Oilers, which had a fellow named Gretzky on its roster.

There's a new golf tour (LIV) that has taken some players from the PGA, who just announced they will suspending those players.

I guess the equivalent to that would be if Matchroom starting suspending players for playing in Predator events.

Personally I think players should have options, and it should be up to the promoters to get players to play in their events.
Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong interview with many player views, but this is only two sides of the game.

To me it's sad but not surprising, the PGA made this their Chosen, course of behavior.
It's so Old School....do it for the sport is what I'm all about.
Remember first, we had McDonalds, then came Burger King. :)

On a total positive note/Change....making the ''cut'' keep in mind.....those players replacing the missing group of 17 at PGA events, will APPRECIATE IT EMMENSLEY$.
Also, creates another herd of up/coming Young pros being given''''', an opportunity to make it.

Over half the field in the first event couldn't qualify for the KornFerryTour. Watching 3rd rate 'pros' play on no-name golf courses has little entertainment value to say the least. Money alone won't make this deal a success.

Hmm…
I disagree.

A better comparison would be when Bonus Ball came along and the pro’s followed the money and damaged what Greg Sullivan was trying to accomplish.
Greg was hurt personally and professionally.

The current head of the house of Saud, is Mohammad Bin Salman, who jailed over 100 members of his own family and jumped the line of succession to take power illegitimately.

MBS ordered the killing of a Saudi Arabian Washington Post journalist Jamal Khoshogghi. They sent a hit squad that attacked, dismembered and burned the pieces of Khoshogghi’s body.

Saudi Arabia is throwing money at Golf in order to “Sportswash” their image.

You cannot buy integrity, and those players that play in the LIV Event are pariahs.

Pool is not going anywhere so long as there are multiple organizations and multiple sets of rules.

When each body protects itself from all the others, all you have is little fiefdoms rather than a strong unified state.
Small steps being made everyday.

IPT was doomed from the start although no one knew it. It was being run by a complete(and tried/jailed) con-artist. Don't see this scenario of HUGE $$$ event(s) anytime soon. No one with any brains would throw that kind of money around with little-to-no chance of a return.
Barry Hearn knew it.

Told me the story of Trudeau’s meeting with him.

While Trudeau tried and failed, he did treat the players well, every player attests to it.

The IPT had played 3 of its 4 (and only) events when KT tried selling IPT to Macau billionaire Stanley Ho's company. The deal fell thru. 'Ol Stan was too sharp for KT's line of shit.
That’s never been verified.

What did happen however, was the passing of UIGEA Law (The Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act) of 2006, which put the kibosh on getting a line for gambling on pool-
That left Trudeau with no way to market to the Sportsbooks.

The reason Snooker can flourish in UK, is 3-fold.
Matchroom created events using BBC $ because BBC needed content,
he produced those events with the highest production values, and there is a betting parlour on nearly every block in London, which become sponsors for events, & those events help business.
All these factors gave the players an outlet to showcase themselves.

Brits are strange bunch, the drink warm beer, go nuts over darts, scockrer, and snooker. Their Pro Soccer players, Pro Dart Thrower, and Soccer players all make respectable money.

Because of fans, sponsorship, and broadcast revenues.

We might learn something from drinking warm beer.🤭
