Countdown to Mosconi Cup

The big clash is on. The countdown is now down to less than a five-finger count, and for the first time, Portomaso in St Julian's joins cities and nations the likes of Romford, Basildon, Dagenham and Bethnal Green, all in the UK; Las Vegas in the US; and Rotterdam and Egmond aan Zee, in the Netherlands, as venues of one of the most exciting international pool competitions -- the Mosconi Cup. :)

Here's a little history of the Mosconi Cup for the young'ns:

The competition was launched in 1994 at Romford, a large suburban town in East London. The annual nine-ball pool tournament, a series of singles and doubles matches, was contested between two teams representing selections from Europe and the US.

When one reads the biography of Willie Mosconi (June 27, 1913-September 12, 1993), one appreciates that few, or possibly no other player, has the credentials of "Mr Pocket Billiards," as he was nicknamed.

Between 1941 and 1957, he won the BCA World Championship of pool an unmatched 15 times. He was respected as pool's greatest ambassador and his name is synonymous with pocket billiards where he pioneered and regularly employed numerous trick shots. set many records, and helped to popularize the game of billiards as a national recreation activity.

Today, Mosconi still holds the officially recognized straight pool, as pocket billiards was called, high record of 526 consecutive balls.

A famous competition associated with a legendary man, the Mosconi Cup this year marks its 15th edition featuring two teams with particular ambitions -- the betterment of the current scoreline which stands at 10.5 wins for the US and 3.5 wins for Europe - the 2006 edition ended in a 12-12 draw.

Ah, the teams:

The current European team is acknowledged as one of Europe's best ever for this event.

The five players are Mika Immonen (Finland), Neils Feijen (Holland), Ralf Souquet (Germany), Mark Gray (England) and Tony Drago (Malta).

The World Cup of Pool winning duo, Rodney Morris and Shane van Boening, Earl Strickland, Jeremy Jones together with the country's number one, Johnny Archer, make up the US team.

Dutchman Alex Lely and Nick Varner are the non-playing captains of Team Europe and Team US, respectively.

Ironically, the Malta appointment will be the 13th edition for both Earl Strickland (US) and German Ralf Souquet (Europe) who enjoy the best number of representations from among the 62 players that participated in the Mosconi Cup over the past 14 years.

One wonders who of the two will look upon the number 13 as a lucky number after the Portomaso encounter.

"We've got a fantastic team this year, with plenty of experience and we will fight to the finish. I am very excited about the Mosconi Cup and looking forward to regaining the trophy, we lost last year," said Varner.

Lely realises that "it will be difficult -- the Americans have won so many times but the tide is beginning to turn. The Europeans, as individuals, have won so many titles recently and when World Champions are left out it shows the strength of the team."

This year's Mosconi Cup will be played at the Hilton Conference Centre, Portomaso, from December 11 to 14 and will feature the two five-man teams in a series of singles and doubles matches.

"Intimidating, dramatic, noisy, excitable, passionate and thrilling are just a few words to describe this magnificent tournament and I believe that all of these will apply when the Mosconi Cup gets underway in Malta," remarked Barry Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Sport.

Online booking:

Online ticket booking on the official website of The Mosconi Cup, www.maltacup.org/mosconi, has been available for a good number of weeks now and there has been an encouraging response from overseas fans who will be travelling to Malta for the tournament.

With the start scheduled for Thursday, bookings will be available from the tournament venue, the Hilton Conference Centre, from tomorrow, opening at 9 a.m., Malta time.

The main sponsors of the Mosconi Cup are PartyCasino.com., Allevents Malta, which forms part of the UK-based Fraser Eagle Group, are the travel partners.

Matchroom Sport are the promoters of The Mosconi Cup while Snooker Promotions have been entrusted with the local organization of the event.

Tony Drago -- winning all of his singles matches at last year's Mosconi Cup earned him the Most Valuable Player Award. Will Drago repeat the same feat in front of his home crowd this week?

I only have one thing to say about this :angel2:

USA, ALL THE WAY!

About Mark Gray from England

Two former snooker professionals have made the successful transition to the increasingly popular worldwide American 9 Ball Pool code with one due to compete in the sport's biggest event next month.

Mark Gray, of Baston, retired from the men's professional snooker circuit five years ago and having taken up 9 ball he is now England's top ranked player and preparing to face the USA as part of the five-man European team for the Mosconi Cup.

The tournament is the sport's equivalent of golf's Ryder Cup and this year will be held in Malta from Thursday, December 11, to Sunday, December 14 with Gray, who is England's only representative, aiming to help Europe retain the trophy live on Sky Sports. Among his teammates will be fellow former snooker star Tony Drago and Germany's Ralf Souquet.

Gray will perhaps be best remembered for his televised snooker victory over Jimmy White but he has already achieved far more in the new code, recently winning the Swiss Championship.

That success saw him selected to represent England alongside world champion Daryl Peach in the 32 nation championship in Rotterdam where the pair finished runners-up to the United States.

Mark said: "Whilst I enjoyed the professional snooker circuit for ten years it was not financially viable and it was necessary to take up a full-time job for the past few years and I began playing American 9 Ball Pool as a hobby.

"I found that my snooker skills were to some extent transferable. Now I am able to play to national and European standard, and it ties in with my full-time job at the recently opened Bourne Snooker Centre."

It's sad that I cannot find one newspaper article about the Mosconi Cup in the American media, other than our beloved pool print magazines.

That said, here's one about Captain Alex Lely of Team Europe. I don't understand what it says, but at least they're talking about it in The Netherlands press: http://www.nusport.nl/20081208/overig/poolbiljarter-lely-captain-europa-in-mosconi-cup

I know that Alex sometimes reads AzBilliards, at least that is what he told me in Vegas a few years ago at an IPT event. At that time, he was contemplating giving up pool altogether because of family, which he truly adores.

I am happy to see that he has been able to continue playing. He is truly a gentleman's gentleman, and I like him! :)

Mason King, Managing Editor of Billiards Digest, says the same thing as me:

"It's USA All the Way!"

Today's front-page article from Mosconi Cup website: http://www.mosconicup.com/

Hey, I kind of like this Mason King guy. Mason says:

Too bad for Team Europe that the Mosconi Cup isn't about who's playing the best pool.

The Mosconi Cup isn't a tournament. It's a pool crucible. A super-heated and pressurized environment of TV lights and short races and alternate breaks and interpersonal chemistry where the normal laws of pool no longer apply.

It's not about individual achievement. It's about momentum. It's about mojo. It's about emotion. It's about talent, trust and togetherness.

You can't quantify this stuff. And this year, America has assembled Team Intangible.

Well said, Mason. I'd give you rep if you were an AzBilliards member for that little snippet!

Will she be in Malta this year? :)

I'm sure she will be....

I sure wish I could be there....Held at the Hilton, right on the water. Yachts worth millions parked right in front of the hotel. Probably the nicest venue ever for pool. (including the IPT tour)

I'll sure be watching, and pulling for the USA!!!!!

Thanks for all the info JAM. I am really looing forward to it if that company does the live stream, otherwise I will be sat waiting for updates.

Hey Rick, the people who have been licenced to live stream is www.ibcbet.com and I can't find anything on that site about the MC.
I don't know how it works with those other sites you gave me but I imagine that they can't put it on if this other company has the rights to it right???

Well....these two sites use the satellite feeds. (TV going to the rest of the world) Sometimes they have glitches, so no guarantees. 95% of the time, they carry them.

You just aren't supposed to use them commercially.....

Alex is a member here on AZBilliards, and post every now and then. His username is plague.

I don't believe he plays pool for a living anymore, but he does some coaching. He doesn't compete in any of the big tournaments.

But he is still very competitive, he recently beat Nick van den Berg in a race to 25 in 10-ball, and then beat Niels Feijen 7-5 in a one-pocket match a week or two later. Both matches were challengematches with the players putting up some money and also some added money. They were held at the poolhall where Alex Lely is working as housepro.

Cant wait... go USA...

Ratings excuse?

You mean just toss out the player with the highest winning percentage ever? The guy who'll pack EVERY seat during his match?

Matchroom Sports is built to make money....Earl guarantees $$$$$$ in thier pocket.

Is it that hard to figure out?

Well said, and I agree.

It reminds me of the ad for The Washington Post: If you don't get it, you don't get it.

Hope all is well with you, Rick S.! :)

Jeremy Jones and Earl?

Can someone tell me why Jeremy and Earl are on the team? Shouldn't the picks for the team be based on the years performance? It would be nice to see some new faces on the team. There are several players that have performed better this year than Jeremy and Earl. Stevie Moore, Gabe Owen, Corey Duel and Charlie Bryant are all ranked higher. I am not trying to be negative, but it would be nice to see some new faces that deserve a chance to represent the U.S.

Jeremy won the BCA's tournament in North Carolina this year, what used to be called the "BCA Open" but this year called "Generation Pool Open," or something like that. He also came in third at the 10-ball Predator tournament. :p

As far as Earl, most promoters want Earl Strickland because his very presence brings attention to their event.
