cue butt diameters

as many know the old titlist had butt diameters in the 1.40's as did many of the old house cues. i then heard it was stroud and james that started the .85 joint and 1.25 butt in joss cues. i'm sure there were others did the same thing.

cues now seem to have got a bit thinner at the biutt.

i have started to experiment with a more parallel cue, i have made a few cues, .87 joint and 1.23 - 1.22 butt. i think i like them better. it just seems to me that i can get a bit more weight forward and a more solid hit.

anyone else try this

The last cue I played with, was .865 at the joint and 1.23 at the butt. I didn't mind the over sized joint at all.

A lot of builders do not just use the wood to balance the he cue. They use metal in the butt to make up for the weight. I do not use weight bolts as I think it makes the butt end too heavy. I would rather use a bit thicker forearm and end of the shaft to make up the difference in weigh the and cue balance.

its not for everyone, but I am not trying to reinvent the wheel, just building cues for for my customers.

We all have our opinion as to the way my cues hit. Have you ever had one of my cues in your hands? Or you just like the expert that said I could not build wood pin cues, because he tried and it would not work?

Just wondering how you got to the opinion my .87 cue would hit like a 2 by 4.

.850-1.250/29=.01379 per inch. The center diam. would be 1.05"
.870-1.220/29=.01206 per inch. The center diam. would be 1.045"
You're taking away some weight in the center of that cue too.
The joint end is a very small factor in weight and stiffness.
Assuming your butt taper is one angle.

SW cues are only .835 at the joint and they're not known to be whippy.
But, they're not thin in the middle .

Something to ponder, perhaps.

Trying to build a sw cue. I am trying different things building my own cues. There are many builders out there trying to make copys . Not me.

if you dont fail, that means you are not trying.

I would much rather fail at trying to make an original, than be successful at making a copyl
 
A .870 joint is a 2X4.

My experience with wood pin cues is they have more flex at the joint. My wood and metal Pin cues are .850" you can definitely tell which pin is in them. At .870" on the wood pin I think they may be a little closer to hitting the same. I have yet to try the bigger joint size. At this point it's just an hypotosis.

Joss, Schon and Szamboti were some of the first to standardize the joint to .840".
Schuler was about .868" if memory serves me right.
I was one of the first to standardize to .850".
.830" was more popular on cues until the late 80's when so many started going to .840" and .840" is still the most popular size.
1.300" butt diameters were fairly common until the late 80's.
I have seen cues barely over 1" butt diameter in the last few years. I did not care for that small of butt diameter.

Current player for the last 3 years. Full splice 28 1/2" butt .890 Joint/ mid -way 1.090 sleeve 1.250
balance 13.275 from sleeve.
3/8 10 titanium pin/phenolic inserts on shafts

Weight 18.1 oz with 29" pool shaft
271/4 old growth billiard shafts

Built for dual purpose.

Please don't throw any 2x4 :)
